THE LEGEND OF KORRA (2012–2014)

The vibe is so fucking miserable, appropriately so for a season about the absence of the element that brought hope and fun back to the world. Of course Korra can't figure out airbending and only knows how to solve problems with violence. She hasn't known freedom yet and doesn't have a well-formed sense of identity.

I love that Korra's progress over the season is slow and painful, and that she doesn't even fully learn her lesson by the end. I had been expecting her airbending to come with a big triumphant epiphany, but instead it came from her acting out of love while she was at her most powerless, and it just barely squeaked out a win. Very brave way to end the season.

I love that her being saved by a literal miracle is what finally enabled her to connect with her spirituality, even if she doesn't fully understand why.

I couldn't believe Korrasami was THAT blatant even as early as season 1. I had been really not enjoying any of the straight "romance" (to the point where Korra's love for Mako being genuine in the final episode felt like a plot twist) so the episode they have together hit me like a truck. They did such a good job of implying that Korra allowing herself to love Asami would resolve her biggest emotional block, and I understand why people say Korrasami walked so Catradora could run.

I really enjoyed how Tenzin is the only one who understands the importance of de-escalation, but doesn't have the earthbender's resolve necessary to make a compelling case for it.

I also loved the escalation of it all and how both antagonists were doomed to burn themselves out and fail. A balanced air bender would've avoided them into defeating themselves. A fully-fledged avatar would realize Amon was a fragile conman who could be easily baited the SECOND they found out his chi-blocking was water bender instead of a battle of willpower.

korra continuously adapting the world to changes often beyond her control is narratively set up. korra changing the world forever, more than anyone else who ever lived, is narratively set up. korra having unlimited godlike power is narratively set up.

WTF IS THIS?

When did Bryke thought this was a good idea? So we have

Plot hole: Bc the world was just fine for God knows how much years with the portals open before Wan and now all of the sudden, 30y open in Korra's time is enough to create a world ending scenario?Sure

Retcon: Vaatu was oblitarated, exorcised into the oblivion and Raava told Wan that if she destroyed Vaatu, he would slowly grow inside of her again and they would fight againt in the next HC. Vaatu would slowly grow inside Raava in the span of 10.000y. So…how the hell will Korra bring Vaatu back in a blink of an eye? Its not only a stupid retcon but also takes the weight of the Harmonic Convergency itself and make all book 2 look pointless

Powerscalling: So they are gonna powercalle Korra to the hightest spot, as a "trade" for using the hate she suffers as pilar plot and marketing tool? And as a way to make it ok the poorly treatment she received in the past years?

Over the past week, I (re)binged Avatar: The Last Airbender, and this week I rewatched The Legend of Korra. And yes ATLA is a phenomenal show, we all know, it doesn't need anymore of its flowers, its got plenty.

And in all honesty, im of the mindset that most criticism of TLoK can be chalked up to "this person doesn't know the production of LoK" or "this person is probably racist/misogynistic". Obviously this isn't the whole or base of criticism for Korra, both as a show and a character, but unfortunately the fandom gave me this mindset with how hypocritical and obtuse about Korra.

The Legend of Korra definitely has its shortcomings for sure. Im not saying its a perfect show or even better than ATLA. But to sneer down at it simply because its not Aang and his crew, is ludicrous. So many people call Korra "the worst avatar" because "she severed the avatar cycle" MIND YOU. She was fighting a literal DEMON, and was helpless in the situation. I will not delve further in this either, since its been discussed so much, even tho #those people dont listen.
