it's wasn't really his fault though, reese knew that. she just didn't know what to do about it. "do you know who i am?" she asked him, eyes narrowing curiously.

she wandered off while her dad schmoozed and headed out of the hotel's event hall and down to the actual hotel bar. it was crowded, but most of the hotel's guests were doctors and other industry people and they were all inside the event hall. reese sat at the corner of the bar, and when she looked over she saw someone that looked almost her age. almost her age meant potentially far more interesting than her options for people to talk to inside. "did you get dragged to the stupid gala too?"

Conrad took an angry sip of his drink, ice clinking against his teeth, the straw had long since fallen out of the cup. A mistake, his restless fingers had been looking for something to play with and the straw was what they settled on. Until it accidentally got flung several feet away. 

He used to be good at this kind of stuff. Talking, smiling, that effortless charm, working a crowd to make his parents happy. He still can … it just has to be about something important. Not vacations and trust funds. Some days it felt like all of his charm was stolen by Jeremiah. He would have been good at this gala.
