A physically strong young woman.
Genuinely we moved on from this way to quickly. She THREW A GUY. By his collar. With one arm. WHILE HANGING OFF A PLATFORM WITH THE OTHER ARM.
Tlok characters I drew for a small sticker pack not so long ago
A bit of flare:]
idk what's worse though
atla stans who are convinced the show is the absolutest shit ever and lok is an insult to it's quality
versus lok fans who are convinced lok is not just flawed in some aspects, but quite shitty overall despite liking it, because of dumb reasons like, oh no, they gave emotionally heavy plotlines to the gaang's children and the krew isn't as significant as the gaang (news flash: it's because it's not a children assemble to save the world story) or that the villains get humanized (which is above the literacy of most of this fandom, I am aware).
Cultural Fashion: Zukoâs Book 1 Hair
We all know that peculiar hairstyle Zuko sports in Book 1. Itâs also a hair style we see on the male Sun Warriors. This hairstyle, like other facets of the Fire Nation aesthetic, is inspired by Thai culture. In this case, Zuko and the male Sun Warriors are sporting traditional Thai topknots.
In traditional Thai culture, the crown of the head is the sacred portal of the spirit of life and is not to be treated lightly, especially regarding children. This sacredness extends to the hair on the crown, resulting in top knots grown over childrenâs fontanels (soft spots). In practical terms, it discourages careless adults from touching the most delicate part of an infantâs developing skull. The cutting of the top knot, known in Thai as kon chuk (ŕšŕ¸ŕ¸ŕ¸ŕ¸¸ŕ¸), is seen as a rite of passage and an auspicious event for children between the ages of 7 and 13.
Obviously, these implications donât quite carry over into the Avatar-verse, since we see plenty of adult Sun Warriors sporting the âdo. Most likely, the hairstyle is meant to add to the Southeast Asian âflavorâ of the Fire Nation.
That said, I do think this cultural subtext adds new dimension to one of Zukoâs most memorable moments, whether intentional or not. When Zuko cuts off his topknot, you can essentially view it through three equally valid lenses:
If you view it through a traditional Chinese/Korean lens, Zuko is renouncing his ties to his father; Confucians viewed hair as a precious gift from oneâs parents and to cut oneâs hair was seen as an act of disloyalty.
If you view it through a traditional Japanese lens, Zuko is renouncing his status in Fire Nation society and abandoning his title for the life of a peasant. In Japanese culture, a samurai seeking to join a monastery or the peasantry would cut off his top knot and undergo a dramatic decline in social status.
In you view it through a traditional Thai lens, Zukoâs hair cutting is a rite of passage. Heâs leaving behind childhood and beginning his journey into adulthood. Thereâs no denying that Zuko matures a lot after he cuts off his top knot.
All of these interpretations fit the Fire Nation as they are a combination of Chinese, Japanese, and Thai culture.
Stuff like this is what draws me back into Avatar as an adult. The series is a mish-mash of so many different cultures, yet they all meld together in a way that still preserves the context of the different cultures they derive from. The show has a masterful way of integrating real-life cultural motifs and historical events into its own story, and it still manages to work both metaphorically and in-universe.

the headline of my youtube videoessay if I made one.
genuinely I do love katara and sokka as a representation of how Indigenous people can be written in a fantasy setting and it was nice to have something like that in a childhood that was spent consuming a lot of media set in fantastical worlds. however I think if those are the only fictional Indigenous characters you can name, especially like as an adult, you should really make an effort to also engage with stories that portray real Indigenous people and cultures in the real world
actually Iâm going to add to this and say something that I know will be very controversial on tumblr but. if the only fictional Indigenous characters you as an adult can name in general are from solely childrenâs media, you should really make an effort to engage with a broader range of stories that portray real Indigenous people and cultures in the real world. sorry. I know this is a touchy subject. This isnât meant as an indictment of adults who engage with childrenâs media overall. I just think those shouldnât be, like, the only Indigenous characters youâre exposed to. respectfully. youâre going to be missing out on a lot of aspects of our stories, frankly. no matter how deep you think that story tailored to a child audience is. it very well may be. it was still written with children in mind first and foremost. please attempt to broaden your horizons.
and if Iâm being really honest? once youâve finished listing fictional Indigenous characters youâve heard of? my challenge to you, white tumblr user, is to name at least one work of non-fiction (book, essay, documentary, etc) created by an actual Indigenous person. youâre allowed to use search engines you just have to name one. and then you have to engage with that work, if you havenât already.
currently represented in this list: Mi'kmaq, Blackfoot, Mohawk, Cherokee, Anishinaabe, Cree, Haida suggestions always welcome
