“All better,” Mia said, giving the padded seat a light pat. “Come downstairs. You can play while I make us something to eat.”

The rest of the afternoon settled into a strange, sweet rhythm.

Annaliese sat cross-legged on the living-room rug surrounded by the old dolls her mother had never thrown away. She held a plastic brush in one hand and a blonde doll in the other, talking to it in a soft, high voice.

“Your hair’s all tangled again. Hold still…” She paused, lifted her free hand, and absently picked her nose, wiping it on the hem of her t-shirt without seeming to notice. A moment later the front of her pull-up grew warm and heavy. She shifted, the plastic crinkling, but kept brushing the doll’s hair.

Mia watched from the kitchen doorway for a few seconds, then walked over and crouched down.

“Annaliese. Did you just wet?”

Annaliese glanced up, eyes wide and guilty. “I… maybe a little.”

Mia reached down and pressed her palm against the front of the soft shorts. The padding underneath was unmistakably soaked.

“More than a little. Come on. Training potty or change your choice.”

Annaliese’s lower lip pushed out. “Don’t wanna use the potty. It’s for babies.”

“You’re wearing a pull-up and playing with dolls on the floor,” Mia said gently but firmly. “Upstairs. Now.”

In the bedroom Mia had her lie back on the changing mat she’d spread on the bed. She peeled the wet pull-up away, wiped her clean, and started to tape up a fresh one only to pause when her fingers brushed something warmer and softer at the back.

“Annaliese.”

“What?”

“Did you poop too?”

“No!” The answer came too fast. Annaliese’s face turned bright pink.

Mia peeled the back open further. The inside was completely soiled messy and heavy. A soft scent filled the quiet room.

“You did. And you fibbed about it.” Mia’s voice stayed calm, almost fond. “Little girls who mess their pull-ups and then lie about it get their bottoms spanked before they get cleaned up. Roll over.”

Annaliese whimpered but obeyed, draping herself across Mia’s lap again. Mia delivered a dozen firm, stinging smacks across her bare cheeks while Annaliese kicked her feet and clutched the bedspread.

Afterward Mia wiped her thoroughly, powdered her, and taped a thicker nighttime pull up around her hips instead of another daytime pull-up. She helped her back into the soft shorts, then pulled Annaliese into her lap and kissed her forehead.

“There. All taken care of.”

That evening they ended up on the big couch under a shared blanket. Annaliese curled against Mia’s side, the thick Goodnite making a quiet crinkle every time she shifted. One of her hands absently played with the hem of Mia’s shirt. Mia ran her fingers through Annaliese’s hair, then let her hand drift lower, slipping under the waistband of the Goodnite to stroke her slowly.

Annaliese made a soft, needy sound and nuzzled closer, pressing her face against Mia’s breast through her shirt.

“Mia…” she whispered.

“Yeah, baby?”

“Can I stay like this? Little… with you taking care of me?”
