"Fittest" rarely means fastest or strongest. It just means "best adapted to the current environment", which can mean pretty much anything, what's fittest will depend entirely on the environment and the species.
For hypersocial species like primates (of which we are a part of), wolves, and so on, fittest means best able to cooperate.
And it's worth reminding people that those who can't work still deserve to be treated as part of the group. Not only because they're people and people deserve basic respect and care, but because we don't know which differences will be an advantage for our species in the future. A healthy species is a species with as much diversity as possible, so that there's a better chance of some having the adaptation we need as the environment inevitably changes.
In almost exactly one week I'll be going to Brazil to visit family (so stoked!!!).
I'll also be travelling to the northeast (I'm from the southeast), so I'll see if I can take some pics of churches and stuff to show y'all if I can. :-)
If I'm less active during most of August, that's why.

I knew I loved that series for a reason
But like genuinely. "humans have an innate need for spirituality" should be pretty transparently a reactionary opinion. It's simply not true and equates something that some people get benefit from with it being a fundamental aspect of being human (and one that is missing it most people today). You gonna start arguing "children *need* fathers or they grow up broken" next?

A graphic novel I might be interested in getting when I'm in Brazil:
Vida (Life) by Paulo Crumbim - Wherein a little ghost has 24 hours to confess to his crush that she's the love of his (after)life, because she's about to be reincarnated.
The thing that has me rethinking getting it is that I hate this trope where the man confesses his love with the expectation that the woman will now drop everything for him.
I might get this one instead:
Lar (Home) by Paulo Crumbim - Madam Death is busy collecting souls, so her friends decide to visit her at her office as a surprise. There wasn't supposed to be anyone there when they arrive...
These graphic novels are reimagined tales based on a comic book series about the afterlives of ghosts at a cemetery, where they live with a werewolf, Frankenstein's monster, a mummy, a vampire, and the physical manifestation of death.

today I learned that in 2008, the city council of florence overturned dante’s sentence of execution if he returned from exile. yes, dante’s inferno dante, who died in 1321.
but the funniest part of this is not that they were debating the exile of a man who has been dead for over 500 years.
the funniest part is that the vote was 19-5. five people voted to uphold dante’s exile.
The objectively funniest part of this is actually that the city that holds his remains, Ravenna, refused to give his remains back. This was a ploy from florence to have his remains moved back for the tourist money and its been ongoing for a long time. Florence had a fake tomb built in the city to trick people into visiting, and have tried to force the return of the remains.
His actual caretakers have been very steadfast in keeping them hidden, moved, or generally out of reach to respect his choice in life to never, ever, ever return to florence, even when he was first offered the chance to return. This is at this point an almost millenium long feud that florence is really, really mad about losing
so basically the five people who wanted to uphold his exile were in the right
Friendly reminder on why going against a deceased person's wishes in life is and should be taboo:
We don't uphold people's choices in life because they'll feel bad in death if we don't observe their requests. Once they're dead, they won't care anymore. They're dead. We do it because we're showing the person basic respect for their decision and to assure the living that when it's their turn, their wishes will be observed for them to the best of the abilities of those left behind.
you are alive on a planet with insects and whales and diatoms and mycelium networks and puppies and your human friends. literally so awesome to be a living thing

sherpas used to be treated like expedition partners that knew the land better than you because they were raised on it and now they’re treated like they are lowly disposable service workers setting up heated tents or spas for wealthy hikers who have no business on the mountain like they are collecting your nasty trash off one of the holiest and most sacred mountains in the world like do y’all understand that we see sagarmatha or mount everest as a living deity on earth while the rest of the world sees her as a conquest?
i LOVE posts that go “this is bad because of *inane religious argument*”. like babe I don’t believe in your gods. that’s just a mountain. it doesn’t make me respect Christianity more just because Christians tell me they believe Jesus rose from the dead.
Typically, I don't care about the religious aspect of things (e.g. I care about what people are doing to Mt. Everest primarily because of the ecological impact and the unethical treatment of locals).
But when it comes to minority religions being stomped on by colonizers, I feel the need to stand in solidarity with them so long as the thing getting stomped isn't harmful to themselves or others.
I'm not a fan of religion in general, but if you're picking on a minority group and/or a global south country that's being exploited, imma be forced to stand with the little guys in solidarity.
Sanctuary of la Coveta, Manresa, Catalonia. Catholics believe that Saint Ignatius of Loyola retired to this cave to meditate and write his Spiritual Exercises. In the 18th century, the cave was turned into a sanctuary.

I never knew about this location. This is definitely worth a pilgrimage one day. The Ignatian Meditation method is a true treasure!
Yes, it is in this cave that Saint Ignatius of Loyola had the mystical experiences through which he came up with his Spiritual Exercises, as he explained himself.
You might be interested in the Ignatian Way. It’s the route that follows the journey that Saint Ignatius’ did in 1522 from his birthplace in Azpeitia (Basque Country) to the Montserrat mountain and this cave in Manresa (Catalonia), passing through the churches and landscapes he passed too.

*idiotic snorting*
Wasn't Wat a common nickname in the middle ages or early modern era? I forget for which name.
Also, it makes sense for Thor to think patrilineal names like Watson mean the person's dad has that name, since that's the case in Thor's culture (his name is Thor Odinsson, his dad is Odin Borsson, etc).
And he wouldn't be entirely wrong, since surnames like Johnson and Watson mean that at some point someone in the family had that name.
