youd think horses were one of those animals that has horrible health due to humans breeding unhealthy animals to achieve a certain look but no they really are just naturally that fucked up
horses’ lungs bleed when they run at a certain speed
if their diet is too rich / low in selenium their hooves fall off
excuse me
The reason they have such poor health outcomes after breaking or otherwise injuring their legs is because their legs are actually hyper-specialized fingers; and as in human fingers, there is very little muscle supporting the bone, just a lot of cartilage and tendons and whatnot. You’d think an animal that literally evolved to run away to avoid being eaten would have ALSO evolved sturdier running appendages, but…
I fucking hate this post, it’s 1 AM I don’t want to know that horse legs are giant fucking fingers
As someone who has a horse and is constantly terrified of All The Things That Could Go Wrong I’m honestly laughing so much because:
Horse’s are actively pushed to run at high speed from a stand still and this can seriously fuck up their lungs, see: Exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage
The hock on a horse’s back leg is essentially our ankle and about as frickin’ fragile (not even our wrist bones are this damned fragile what the fuck??)
The frog is the bottom of a horses hoof which is like a shock absorber (think the pad in the middle of a cats paw but nowhere near as effective). It’s part of the circulatory system and helps pump blood up the leg each time the hoof contacts the ground. So, the frog (which has nerves btw and should NEVER be cut or trimmed by a farrier) is an exposed, ground-hitting, mildly-effective shock absorber pad that a horse relies on so its legs don’t just give up from the stress of repeated impact on the bones and joints in the leg.
Horse’s are lucky owners of guttural pouches (which not too many mammalian animals have, the rhino does and the South American forest mouse too). These are, basically, air sacks in the head that have arteries (internal carotid artery), cranial nerves, and hypoglossal nerves running through them. And, honestly, we got no clue what they’re for, though the best guess is an internal fan to cool down those nerves and that blood.
Horse hair is a naturally evolved UV filter.
They have two types of sweat glands with one (eccrine) only found in the frog (that good ol’ shock absorber). Horse’s basically get sweaty feet.
The problem with those two sweat glands and is primarily the only way horse’s can cool down, when its hot as fuck or they’ve been running a lot, cooling down via sweat becomes pretty darn ineffective. So horse’s ain’t even developed a decent way of regulating their temperature which, for a prey animal that’s gotta run run run, seems pretty damned stupid.
A horse’s body temp can rise so frickin’ quickly and so suddenly and can rise to 106F(41.1C) compared to the normal temp of around 101.5F(38.6C).
They will literally stress out about Everything Ever. Fear = Survival so they will panic at the sound of a crisp packet as surely as they will at the grumble of a lion. And also, if you talk to them from their blind spot (that might get you kicked if you’re not careful and they’re really easily spooked tho).
Horse’s basically are disasters.
