no but the “”ai”” boom is crazy bc they made the entire internet so shitty that the only reason to use it is because it’s where all the people are and now they’re getting rid of the people. like i’m straight up logging off and going to the library there’s nothing on here anymore
‘here’s how to tell if an image is ai’ ‘signs the person you’re talking to is a bot’ ‘how to tell if a song is ai generated’ ah but consider this: i am shutting my laptop and walking outside
I saw a bsky post last year where someone said their grandma couldn't tell what was real on the internet anymore so she stopped using it and I really, genuinely think the techbros currently ruining everything have never even considered that possibility. their projections and pie charts and market share research and whatever simply do not take into account a scenario where people lose interest in being online. like yeah we're pretty much all gonna keep using the internet to book travel and look up words and order pizza, but in terms of how we spend our leisure time? I'm still extremely online, but in the last few years I've been learning candlemaking and carpentry and sewing, and I was already spending a lot of time cooking and reading books and skating at the rink and hiking, and an afternoon spent on any of those things always leaves me feeling better about myself than an afternoon spent doomscrolling. I think my daily life is going to keep reflecting that more and more as the slop encroaches, and it sounds like I'm far from the only one feeling that way. silver lining to everything, I suppose.
Hey Jon, I'm bored and thought this would be funny. Are you a Markiplier fan? And whether or not you are, would you consider watching his horror movie, Iron Lung, based off the game with the same title, and giving us your opinion? It's been doing insanely good in the US. Love your writing, btw! Would also love some tips for writing horror, as a young writer!
I've not seen Iron Lung yet, but I'm keen to as I really like the game.
And I am a Markiplier fan, even though I've never watched any of his stuff. I'm a fan because his streaming of Slay the Princess was one of the big things that started its taking off to a frankly staggering degree, all of which led to me getting a rather tasty bonus from Tony & Abby. So I will always be a fan of Markiplier for indirectly making me a bit of cash. Cheers mate!
And a quick horror writing tip for young writers... Pay attention to rhythm - body genres like horror have a lot in common with music or poetry; because it's as much about flow and timing of the horror as it is about the what the horror is.
Legitimately, given how uncomfortable many folks are with frank discussions of sex in general and BDSM in particular, I don't think people are ready to have the conversation about the similarities between writing horror and domming a scene. Gamesmastering a TTRPG as well - any activity that involves eliciting specific physiological and emotional responses from a participant or audience member.
I feel like I’ve always felt this in my bones but it’s so nice to hear it in words. Writing always has me feeling like some mad conductor of the world’s most perverted symphony
i can't believe he was only 3 apples tall when the horrors got him ☹️
Bandcamp Friday, you say? Oh go on, then.

enough about the timeloop I wanna hear about the post-timeloop.
person who just got over the horror of being trapped in a loop and settled into a comfortable routine...but then the timeloop breaks and they struggle to reacclimatize. person trapped in a loop for years who grieved their loved ones—who are suddenly back and acting like nothing happened (because for them nothing did). teenager who aged physically and mentally during the timeloop and now they're so much older than they're supposed to be. random strangers who were trapped in a loop together relieved to get away from each other at last, but feeling oddly bereft of familiar company. service worker who is pissed as fuck to have to go back to work
person who lost their impulse control suddenly living in a world that has consequences again. person who lost their brain-to-mouth filter and now just says things they can't take back. person with choice paralysis because the future was certain and safe and familiar for so long and now who knows what the fuck will happen next. gimme timeline re-entry dysphoria!
Just got diagnosed with bipolar recently and this was a hell of a thing to see in my inbox
i think a really funny subgenre of “Jon comes out as ace to Martin” fics is where Jon’s fully aware of his atypical relationship to sex and can describe it rather succinctly, oftentimes in a way that’s clear he doesn’t think less of himself for it but rather that that’s simply How He Is—but he has no clue there’s a label for it
so he gives his little spiel and Martin replies “oh, so you’re saying you’re asexual?”
and Jon just goes “i’m What.”

thinking about the hole that sasha left behind. she was the first archival assistant to go so we basically know nothing about her. she even teases this in her final words: 'i never told you what happened to me in artifact storage' and she's right! we never learn! We only know she likes computers and nitpicking pronunciations of circus instruments!
Not!Sasha replaced her but also like. took her place in the narrative. we know more about not!sasha than we do about sasha james. she got to take all her development and intrigue. she got to move on in the story where sasha didnt.
so even though we can recognize sasha's original VO, we dont know what she looks like. we dont know what she acted like. we dont know her likes or dislikes or her childhood. we can draw her or write fanfiction where she survived, but none of us have any idea how accurate that will be. we'll honestly just be playing off shallow tropes, or using sasha as a blank space for whatever deus ex machina we imagine she could have pulled off if she was still around. None of that is 'her', she's as robbed of her personhood in our attempts to save her as she was from the not!them.
the characters in the show lost her, but so did we. the 4th wall protects us from being fooled by the not!them, but it also means we have no way of ever learning who she actually was.
The meta of this reminds me a lot of how I’ve started to interpret fan fiction as “somewhere else”.
Every day I see new additions to ao3, and every day I think “these characters have gone on a new adventure. they are still out there, together. sometimes they work in a coffee shop. sometimes they exist in the star trek universe. sometimes a version of sasha didn’t die and just obliterated elias immediately and they were all fine”
and honestly I really love that. They’re characters, and when we create worlds for them to be characters in it really does feel like they made it in a way.

A few years ago while trying to find ways to commit suicide as painlessly as possible, I came across a PDF of Dr. Paul Quinnett's The Forever Decision. Thinking it might go into actual methods of suicide (I read an article once that actually did that and was trying to find it again) I started to read it, and I think I only got about two pages in before I was crying too much to actually see the words.
I downloaded the PDF to my hard drive and I open it again whenever I'm feeling too suicidal to do much else, but not enough to start booking a ride to the hospital. And every time without fail I only go up to a few pages before backing off and choosing to live another day just because suicide suddenly seems even more unbearable than whatever the hell upset me in the first place.
All the book really does is [I'm pulling a summary from GoodReads here as, again, I've read no more than 5 pages] "discusses the social aspects of suicide, the right to die, anger, loneliness, depression, stress, hopelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, the consequences of a suicide attempt, and how to get help."
But it also starts with the author kindly asking the reader to complete the book before going through with anything, and for some reason I'm compelled to really just try to read it all before finalizing everything. Despite not yet completing it (hopefully never will) I think I can safely say it's saved my life at least a few times now.
It's intentionally legal to copy and redistribute this book to keep it as accessible as possible, and it's very easy to find, but here's a link for it anyways.
they just don't make characters like jon archivist sims. he spends an entire season having a forty episode long delusional breakdown and that's only maybe the third or fourth worst period of time in his life. he gets intervened on twice. he gets kidnapped thrice. during one of those kidnappings he spends a month tied to a chair getting forcibly moisturized by a plastic ringmistress mannequin and no one notices. he fully dies for six months but gets up again when a friendly grim reaper gives his unbreathing body a pep talk. he spends several episodes at the start of the final season so depressed that it's unclear if he even moves for multiple days in a row. the basis for his magic powers is that he is so traumatized that he begins to need continuous further trauma in order to live, which gives him the ability to explode people with his mind. he spends about fifty seconds at the top of an episode self-harming directly into a tape recorder, which is not even the most fucked up thing to happen to him that episode. he finally cried on audio for the first time in the penultimate ep and the only reaction I saw for several days after was wildly enthusiastic cheering. he's missing two ribs and he's at least 80% scar tissue by volume and the only canon information we have about his appearance is that he looks terrible at all times.
Sorry to bring this out of the tags, but it’s mentioned in episode 81: a guest for Mr. Spider
So on top of allthat OP mentioned, we can add the fact that this 30something year old already looks like an old man (:
what is UP with the urge to create the most fucked scenarios in existence
