a big sisterâs college tips
wait until after syllabus week to buy your textbooks. they might not be required. itâll save you moneyÂ
prioritize your classes by number of credit hours. more credit hours = bigger impact on your GPA. sometimes thereâs not enough study time to go around Â
if you wanna dress up for class, dress up for class. if you wanna pull up in the sweatshirt you wore yesterday, thatâs okay tooÂ
locate your classes before they start, so you donât get lost on the first day. check and see if your college has an app of some sort with a campus map!Â
old exams are more valuable than life itself Â
set your class schedule as your home screen until youâve got it downÂ
Chegg.com. youâre welcomeÂ
carry a sweatshirt. it may be 100 degrees outside but chances are itâs 30 degrees in your lecture hall Â
keep your syllabi Â
write things down!! planner, phone, laptop, etc. Â
sit in the front. go up and introduce yourself to your professor after the first day, say youâre looking forward to the class. build a relationship! Professors do not round grades for students they donât at least recognizeÂ
bring your chargers with you everywhereÂ
sometimes itâs easier to wake up early and study for an exam than stay up late the night before Â
shower shoes. have you ever heard of toe fungusÂ
the dorms are bad BUT you will get through it (and make friends while doing it)Â
thereâs no such thing as a condom that doesnât fit  Â
every time you skip class it costs you money. go to class. (unless you are dying or have no other time to finish something for another class)
your mental health is important. college can be overwhelming. know your limits. seek help if you need it.Â
sometimes if you go to your professorâs office hours and ask questions a day or two before an exam they will steer you towards information that will be coveredÂ
find your study space. the library is your friend Â
parking is a bitch and a halfÂ
itâs okay to miss your parents. call them. (they miss you too)Â
talk to your advisor!!! let them advise you!!!
donât study yourself into the ground. after college youâre a real life adult - enjoy college while it lasts. go out, make friends, if you drink, do so responsibly. uber exists for this very reasonÂ
keep an eye on your drink at all timesÂ
donât feel pressured to go out and drink because college. itâs not for everybody Â
on a related note: pedialyte is your friend Â
donât be afraid to drop a class that doesnât fit you, but talk to your advisor firstÂ
chances are youâre paying a lot of money to be where you are. party if you wanna, but do not let it interfere with your grades. Â
youâre gonna get a lot of free stuff. take advantageÂ
if you can handle it with your class load, get a job. itâs a good way to make friends.Â
itâs okay to change your major. really!Â
first semester is easier if you get involved with something!! Â
there will be weeks when you have nothing due, and then there will be weeks when you have 5 exams 14 assignments and 2 papers due all at once. take advantage of down time. work ahead!! make life easier for your future self Â
carry a water bottle Â
exercise will not only help avoid the freshman 15 but also make you feel better Â
itâs okay if youâre not best friends with your roommateÂ
communicate if they are doing something that annoys you Â
keep your dorm clean. the only thing worse than a tiny space is a messy oneÂ
buy an umbrella

âam i Having A Brain Problem or Being a Shitheadâ: a short procrastination checklist
aka why tf am i procrastinating on The Thing (more like a flowchart, actually)
lots of people who have executive function difficulties worry about whether theyâre procrastinating on a task out of laziness/simply wanting to be a jerk or mental struggles. this checklist might help you figure out which it is at any given time! (hint: itâs almost never laziness or being a jerk.)Â (obligatory disclaimer: this is just what works for me! something different might work better for you.)
1) do I honestly intend to start the task despite my lack of success?
yes: itâs a Brain Problem. next question
no: itâs shitty to say one thing & do another. better be honest with myself & anyone expecting me to do the task.
2) am I fed, watered, well-rested, medicated properly, etc?
yes: next question
no: guess what? this is the real next task
3) does the idea of starting the task make me feel scared or anxious?
yes: Anxiety Brain. identify whatâs scaring me first.
no: next question
4) do I know how to start the task?
yes: next question
no: ADHD Brain. time to make an order of operations list.
5) do I have everything I need to start the task?
yes: next question
no: ADHD Brain lying to me about the steps again, dangit. first task is âgather the materialsâ.
6) why am i having a hard time switching from my current task to this new task?
iâm having fun doing what iâm doing: itâs okay to have fun doing a thing! if task is time-sensitive, go to next question.
i have to finish doing what iâm doing: might be ADHD brain. can I actually finish the current task or will I get trapped in a cycle? does this task really need to be finished?
the next task will be boring/boring-er than the current task: ADHD brain. re-think the next task. what would make it exciting? what am I looking forward to?
I might not have enough time to complete the task: ADHD brain wants to finish everything it starts. (if task is time-sensitive, go to next question)
i just want to make the person who asked me to do it angry: sounds like anxiety brain trying to punish itself, because I know Iâll be miserable if someone is angry at me. why do i think I deserve punishment?
no, I seriously want to piss them off: okay, iâm being a shithead
7) have I already procrastinated so badly that I now cannot finish the task in time?
yes: ADHD brain is probably caught in a guilt-perfection cycle. since I canât have the task done on time, i donât even want to start.
reality check: having part of a thing done is almost always better than none of a thing done. if I can get an extension, having part of it done will help me keep from stalling out until the extension deadline. iâll feel better if I at least try to finish it.
no, thereâs still a chance to finish on time: ADHD brain thinks that I have all the time in the world, but the truth is I donât.Â
reality check: if iâm having fun doing what Iâm doing, I can keep doing it, but I should probably set a timer & ask someone to check on me to make sure I start doing the task later today.
8) Iâve completed the checklist and still donât know whatâs wrong!
probably wasnât honest enough with myself. take one more look.
if Iâm still mystified, ask a friend to help me talk it out.
hope this helps some of you! YOUâRE DOING GREAT SWEETIE DONâT GIVE UP ON YOU
That is brilliant! Iâll use that for the basis of my own checklist and refine.
Some TED talks that will change your life.
How to make stress your friend by Katie McGonial (14.5 minutes)Â
âStress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.â

Why do people succeed? Is it because theyâre smart? Or are they just lucky? Neither. Analyst Richard St. John condenses years of interviews into an unmissable 3-minute slideshow on the real secrets of success.
A simple way to break a bad habit by Judson Brewer (9.5 minutes)

Learn more about the mechanism of habit development and discover a simple but profound tactic that might help you beat your next urge to smoke, snack or check a text while driving.
Donât regret regret by Kathryn Schulz (17 minutes)
Weâre taught to try to live life without regret. But why? Using her own tattoo as an example, Kathryn Schulz makes a powerful and moving case for embracing our regrets.
How to make hard choices by Ruth Chang (14.5 minutes)
Hereâs a talk that could literally change your life. Which career should I pursue? Should I break up â or get married?! Where should I live? Big decisions like these can be agonizingly difficult. The danger of silence by Clint Smith (4 minutes)Â
We spend so much time listening to the things people are saying that we rarely pay attention to the things they donât,â says poet and teacher Clint Smith. A short, powerful piece from the heart, about finding the courage to speak up against ignorance and injustice.
How to speak so that people want to listen by Julian Treasure (10 minutes)
Have you ever felt like youâre talking, but nobody is listening? Hereâs Julian Treasure to help. Your body language shapes who you are by Amy Cuddy (21 minutes)
Body language affects how others see us, but it may also change how we see ourselves. Social psychologist Amy Cuddy shows how âpower posingâ â standing in a posture of confidence, even when we donât feel confident â can affect testosterone and cortisol levels in the brain, and might even have an impact on our chances for success.
The happy secret to better work by Shawn Achor (12 minutes)Â
We believe we should work hard in order to be happy, but could we be thinking about things backwards? In this fast-moving and very funny talk, psychologist Shawn Achor argues that, actually, happiness inspires us to be more productive.
A call to men by Tony Porter (11 minutes) [TW: graphic desc. of rape]Â
At TEDWomen, Tony Porter makes a call to men everywhere: Donât âact like a man.â Telling powerful stories from his own life, he shows how this mentality, drummed into so many men and boys, can lead men to disrespect, mistreat and abuse women and each other. His solution: Break free of the âman box.â

How to do well in a class taught by a crappy teacher
Weâve all been there at some point, and it especially sucks if youâre interested in the subject. Sorry this is long but I really hope it helps!
These are some things that bad teachers have in common, in my experience.
Qualities of a crappy teacher
relies entirely on videos to teach lessons
rarely, if ever, gives notes
doesnât give reviews for tests either or any clues as to what is actually on the test
if they do give notes, they are disorganized, scrappy, and ultimately meaningless
doesnât give straight answers when asked questions / answers questions with questions that donât even make sense
loses your homework/essays all the time
they are genuinely surprised when their students actually do well
tells students not to study a certain thing because it wonât be on the test. Then itâs on the test and youâre screwed.
when showing how to do a problem, they only do the easiest examples ever. Honestly. You would be blessed to get a problem that easy on the actual assignment, where there are now super complicated problems that you have no idea how to do!
the homework assignments they give donât help you understand the lesson better, itâs just a bunch of busy work.
they hand out a sheet, no explanation whatsoever, and say âalright. go do thisâ what? Go do what? Rip out my hair? I donât even know what stoichiometry is and now I have 55 minutes to do it. Fabulous.
if someone does something wrong, the teacher just makes them do it over again and again, without helping the student understand or explaining anything
they hand back your tests five decades after you actually took it. What was the test even on? Same deal with homework and worksheets
They often have a condescending behavior towards students and make students feel stupid when they get something wrong or ask questions
Now that youâve verified that you indeed have a crappy teacher, here are some tips to actually do well in their class. Impossible? Nope. But it will take more effort to get a good grade in this class and understand the material because you are now both the teacher and the student. (Sorry I talk about Khan Academy a lot, but at the same time, not that sorry because itâs a life saver).
Teach yourself lesson by lesson. If they wonât, you will. Make sure that you are learning the right material, so that you can ace your quizzes/ tests. Yes, it takes time, but it will be worth it once you can finally understand the class, I promise. You can teach yourself by relying on other sources to learn the material, such as the textbook you already have for the class, Khan Academy, and other online resources and study aids.
Donât rely only on their notes, study materials, or worksheets to study off of or understand the material. This doesnât mean you shouldnât use them, you should definitely pay attention to them, as it might give you a clue as to what is on the test. However, you should probably invest some time into making your own notes and study materials outside of class, whether the material is from your class textbook or online resources.Â
Khan Academy!!! (Itâs completely free and amazing) I honestly can not stress how many times Khan Academy has saved my life and my grades, especially in math and science subjects. If thereâs a lesson (or, letâs be honest, an entire class) that youâre having difficulty understanding, just go to KA and find the lesson and they will have videos that take you through it step-by-step. Also, you can pause and rewind the videos if you need to understand something better (unlike crappy teachers) and they do plenty of examples (unlike crappy teachers). I swear Iâm not sponsored by them or anything, itâs just a life saver! You can take classes on there in your free time too. For example, I couldnât fit a personal finance class into my school schedule, so Iâm taking it on KA.
Use online sites and resources to help you understand the material. Quizlet is an app for creating sets of flashcards. In my opinion, they are way more helpful than notecards, because they have games using the terms you put in and different methods of studying the material (by spelling, term, definition, etc). Duolingo is great for learning languages and maintaining your vocabulary in a language you are taking in school. You can use SparkNotes to better understand literature and poetry (they also have great studying/ test prep materials). Shmoop is another great resource for poetry. Khan Academy has lessons on math, science, art, music, history, and economics. The Purdue OWL is a life saver when it comes to writing essays; it has everything you need to know about grammar, writing techniques, format (especially MLA format), and mechanics. Basically, it has all the info your crappy teacher failed to give you.Â
STUDY. Good teachers go over the material enough to ensure that their students understand the material and they make sure the students are familiar with it. They will also usually go over the same materials in different ways, so that students with different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) can benefit. Crappy teachers? Not so much. Therefore, the material is not ingrained in your mind, so you need to work harder than in other classes to familiarize yourself with the material and make sure you understand it enough to recall the information and be tested on it.
Practice what youâve learned. Try to find practice quizzes and tests online on the subject and material you are learning. Sometimes there will be mini quizzes at the end of chapters in class textbook. Also, some of the online resources above have quizzes on the specific material.
Talk/ study with other people who are taking the same course or people you know who have taken the class in the past. If your friend is taking the same class as you but they have a different teacher, study with them and ask them for help and notes. If you know someone who has taken the class a previous semester or year, as them for help with the material and advice on tests and passing the class with a decent grade. You can also study with other people in your class, because it is likely that they are in the same position as you and you can all help each other out.
Good luck in your class and thanks for reading, I hope this helps somehow!
little things iâve learned:
one: pay attention to the music youâre relating to. sometimes itâs a clear indicator that something is wrong. other times, itâs an indicator that something is very, very right. when the latter happens, pay extra close attention.
two: true control is subtle, not obsessive. you may not even know that you have it when you do. people who are in control do not question it. they just are.
three: never pass up the opportunity to stick the tips of your fingers out the window of a moving car. feel the wind carry you to the sound of your favorite songs. this is a reminder that youâre alive.
four: thoughts donât have to mean anything. you can just let them be there.
five: notice when youâre struggling and allow yourself some leeway when you do. however, learn the difference between giving yourself leeway and enabling your struggle.Â
six: you cannot build self-love from a foundation of self-hatred. first, work toward self-acceptance. love will follow.
seven: do not love others simply because they love you back. do not expend your love on people who wonât love you back.Â
eight: donât forget to stop and look around. take a moment a day to stop doing and just be. the mindfulness hype isnât overrated. thereâs a reason for it.
nine: setting limits and saying no will not end any relationship worth keeping.Â
ten: friendships built on moments of competitive misery are not healthy. if you find that youâre having the urge to constantly showcase your misery around someone, take that as a red flag. sadness is not a competition you want to win.
eleven: recovery is not about being happy. some days you will feel bored and flat. but these days are still better than those you built around destroying yourself. these days are still victories. recovery is about being alive.
twelve: when youâve built an identity around being sad, the concept of happiness may scare you. giving that sadness up will strip you of most everything and leave you feeling empty. embrace this emptiness and fill it up with exploration. youâll find that itâs worth it.
thirteen:Â you will not come out of your coldest days the same as you were going into them. this is not a bad thing. someday, youâll be warm enough to feel the sun on your face again.
do u guys understand how creepy the pledge of allegiance is though like every day when ur a kid everybody just chants how great america is every morning itâs creepy
You do that every morning???
EVERY MORNING.
wait

is this a real thing i thought that was just in the simpsons
Wait, other countries donât do this.

I remember when my dad had a conversation with me
because I asked him what the Austrian pledge of allegiance was (because heâs from Austria)
and he said âwe donât have a pledge of allegianceâ
and I said âwhy not?â
âhoney, think about what training your children to mindlessly pledge to a flag, without really knowing what theyâre talking about, sounds like to Austriansâ
âoh. hitler.â

Everything Is Awful and Iâm Not Okay: questions to ask before giving up
Are you hydrated? Â If not, have a glass of water.
Have you eaten in the past three hours? Â If not, get some food â something with protein, not just simple carbs. Â Perhaps some nuts or hummus?
Have you showered in the past day? Â If not, take a shower right now.
If daytime: are you dressed? Â If not, put on clean clothes that arenât pajamas. Â Give yourself permission to wear something special, whether itâs a funny t-shirt or a pretty dress.
If nighttime: are you sleepy and fatigued but resisting going to sleep? Â Put on pajamas, make yourself cozy in bed with a teddy bear and the sound of falling rain, and close your eyes for fifteen minutes â no electronic screens allowed. Â If youâre still awake after that, you can get up again; no pressure.
Have you stretched your legs in the past day? Â If not, do so right now. Â If you donât have the spoons for a run or trip to the gym, just walk around the block, then keep walking as long as you please. Â If the weatherâs crap, drive to a big box store (e.g. Target) and go on a brisk walk through the aisles you normally skip.
Have you said something nice to someone in the past day? Â Do so, whether online or in person. Â Make it genuine; wait until you see something really wonderful about someone, and tell them about it.
Have you moved your body to music in the past day? Â If not, do so â jog for the length of an EDM song at your favorite BPM, or just dance around the room for the length of an upbeat song.
Have you cuddled a living being in the past two days? Â If not, do so. Â Donât be afraid to ask for hugs from friends or friendsâ pets. Â Most of them will enjoy the cuddles too; youâre not imposing on them.
Do you feel ineffective? Â Pause right now and get something small completed, whether itâs responding to an e-mail, loading up the dishwasher, or packing your gym bag for your next trip. Â Good job!
Do you feel unattractive? Â Take a goddamn selfie. Â Your friends will remind you how great you look, and youâll fight societyâs restrictions on what beauty can look like.
Do you feel paralyzed by indecision? Â Give yourself ten minutes to sit back and figure out a game plan for the day. Â If a particular decision or problem is still being a roadblock, simply set it aside for now, and pick something else that seems doable. Â Right now, the important part is to break through that stasis, even if it means doing something trivial.
Have you seen a therapist in the past few days? Â If not, hang on until your next therapy visit and talk through things then.
Have you been over-exerting yourself lately â physically, emotionally, socially, or intellectually? Â That can take a toll that lingers for days. Give yourself a break in that area, whether itâs physical rest, taking time alone, or relaxing with some silly entertainment.
Have you changed any of your medications in the past couple of weeks, including skipped doses or a change in generic prescription brand? Â That may be screwing with your head. Â Give things a few days, then talk to your doctor if it doesnât settle down.
Have you waited a week? Â Sometimes our perception of life is skewed, and we canât even tell that weâre not thinking clearly, and thereâs no obvious external cause. Â It happens. Â Keep yourself going for a full week, whatever it takes, and see if you still feel the same way then.
Youâve made it this far, and you will make it through. Â You are stronger than you think.
In case no one told you growing up
Bras last longer if you let them air dry. Donât put them in the dryer.
If you have a problem with frizzy hair, donât dry your hair with a towel. It makes the frizzies worse. (I recently read an article that said to use a t-shirt? I brush mine out and let it air dry.)
Whites wash best in hot water. Everything else can be in cold - save on your electricity bill.
You can kill 99.9% of germs in a sponge by putting it in the dishwasher for a cycle or by microwaving it for 2 min (be sure to make the sponge damp before microwaving and to put a cup half full of water in with it and please DO NOT squeeze the sponge until it has cooled off)
Airing out your room/house and letting sunlight in every so often can decrease the number of household pests like silverfish and ants.
Black underwear is best during your period as stains are less likely to be visible.
To save money, put aside 10% of each paycheck into a savings account. Itâll add up.
Unless your hair has something on/in it (like grease or mud or something), using conditioner first can actually be the better choice. The conditioner holds in the good oils that help you hair look sleek and beautiful, which shampoo would otherwise wash away.
Speaking of shampoo - if you have long hair, washing just the bits that touch your scalp is generally enough. The rest of your hair gets cleaned with just the run off from your scalp.
If you put a tampon in and itâs uncomfortable/you can feel it, you didnât do it quite right. A properly placed tampon is virtually unnoticeable by the wearer.
Apply deodorant/antiperspirant a couple hours in advance of when you need it. This gives the product the chance to block your sweat glands. Using deodorant just before going somewhere where youâll sweat (this means walking outside for people in high humidity places) results in your sweat washing the deodorant off and starkly limiting its usefulness.
After running the dryer, use the dryer sheet from that load to brush out the lint catch - it gets everything off in a fraction of the time itâll take you to get it clean with your bare hands. Paper towels also work well.
Wash your face everyday, or as often as possible. Forget which brand of cleanser is best. Just washing your face everyday will guarantee you clearer skin. And do you best not to pop pimples, as tempting as the urge may be.
Fold laundry asap after taking it from the dryer to avoid wrinkles. This may seem obvious for dress shirts and silly for things like t-shirts, but youâll notice the difference even then once your shirts stop looking like unfolded paper balls.
To all the kids whose parents couldnât help you with this kind of stuff
Addition: the natural acidity of a vagina can bleach the gusset on darker underwear. Itâs perfectly normal.
i did not know some of this stuff, so useful!
The best thing you can do to keep your skin clear (aside from washing) is to frequently change your pillowcase. Throw on a fresh one every day if you want. Get nice cotton pillowcases at Ross.
