Series 9 - Sleep No More
I think this is super important to remember.
This is a really good post. Death is inevitable in rescue, whether it’s the only humane option left to prevent suffering, or the natural end of a life well lived in care. What’s most important are the protocols and criteria. for us, we’re lucky in that we’ve had enough support we’ve never had to turn away a domestic animal. And for euthanasia, we only euth when quality of life is low or plummeting and there aren’t any realistic options left to regain a good life, or for temperament/mental health, only when an animal is beyond attempts to rehabilitate AND quality of life can’t be maintained without endangering volunteers or other animals. There are plenty of ‘asshole’ rats who live their lives out here, and honestly it’s a huge amount of resources that we realistically wouldn’t be able to do if it were a much larger animal.
When I was a trainer I would volunteer as much time as I could at shelters where they took in big dogs who were “unadoptable” because of aggression issues (which were usually just play behaviors that came across as aggression due to size and poor training but sometimes really were aggression) and worked really hard with those dogs to train those behaviors out of them, then worked even harder to find the right owners to adopt those dogs. The interview process I gave was extremely intense.
I worked for free, of course; my hourly fee wasn’t something they ever could have afforded.
But if they could have? They would have hired me in a second to work with the other dogs, and I would have done it. If they have been funded anywhere near my going rate - or even ¾ it because I love dogs so much - I would have taken a full time job there training to help save those dogs.
But they were not funded at all, as a “kill” shelter. Nobody cared. Nobody wanted to help. Every single worker there cared so much. Every dog was loved. Every dog was loved. Every worker wanted to bring those animals home if they could. We all worked there out of love and care and compassion.
But there was no funding and in fact we often had to get in through protesters. Because it was a “kill” shelter. There were 10ft tall closed fence gates at the end of the driveway every night. Threats of violence. Volunteers had to quit because of pressure. Tears every time we lost an animal.
Every big pup I worked with found a home, I’m proud to say. I was lucky.
But it was not an easy place to work.
If we’d been better funded? That would have been so amazing.
In case anyone’s wondering is because getting an x ray once is so barely harmful that it rounds to zero but standing in front of an x ray emitter 40 hours a week for years will definitely kill you
If I go to the bar and have one drink with the bartender I’ll be fine. If the bartender has a drink with every patron then they will die
This is all true and immediately obvious to anyone who thinks about it for more than 1.5 seconds, but it doesn’t change the fact that “dude goes to egypt to press a button” is still the funniest set of words I’ve read today.

Top 10 BtVS characters (as voted by my followers): #3 — Rupert Giles (67.2%) ↳ “It’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true. The bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats. We always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”
Howl, tell me what’s going on. Please, I don’t care if you’re a monster.

I know I talk a lot of shit about supergirl but I really do love it with my whole heart. Like not the show so much but the Vibe. The potential. The hope help and compassion of it all that’s buried under all the CW mediocrity

By the way, Alex Danvers is smart as hell, highly intuitive and a lesbian. The fact that she hasn’t called her sister out for talking about one woman 1,000,000,069 times a day is the least believable thing on a show about a flying alien in a cape.
