Before we study Quran, we must know what Quran is?

What do you think when you hear the word Quran?

It is the Kalaam of Allah, speech of Allah.

Is it important to know speech of someone? What He (the creator) wants from us?

What the word ‘Quran’ means? 

 (قرء، قراءہ( Qara’a, Qiraa’ah = recitation

Quran is that which is read/recited. That which is recited and read a lot/very often.

How do we describe the Quran?

-          It is the word of Creator.

How does Allah describe Quran?

And indeed, it [i.e., the Quran] is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. The Trustworthy Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] has brought it down. Upon your heart, [O Muhammad] that you maybe of the warners. In a clear Arabic language. And indeed it is mentioned in the scriptures of former peoples. [Al-Shu’ara’, 192-196]

It was revealed in verses :

 بَيِّنَاتٍ آيَاتٍ

“We have sent down to thee Manifest Signs "۔ [Al-Baqarah:99]

How was the revelation?

-           It was gradual revelation. Not in one go. 23 years it was revealed. If you read the book in one go, it’s exhausting, and you won’t remember it after sometime.

-          To strengthen the resolve/determination of Prophet pbuh. “ And those who disbelieve say, “Why was the Qur’an not revealed to him all at once?”  Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly.” [Surah Furqan: 32]

Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan. Lailatul Qadr. The night of power/decree. One of the last ten odd nights of Ramadan. [al-Qadr: 1]

Why was it sent down? What was the purpose?

-           As a guide…

“[This is] a Book which we have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord – to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy”- [Surah Ibrahim]

When you are in darkness, do you know where the bed is, where the door is? If you move you can fall, get hurt. Ignorance is described as darkness. And the Quran is sent down to take us out of ignorance to guidance and light.

Who are the recipients of Quran?

The Quran has been sent not only for Muslims, but to the entire mankind.

“Indeed, We sent down to you the Book for the people in truth.” [Surah Zumr: 41]

Titles of Quran:

It is upright!(Which leads to correct way) It’s correct, no mistakes, no error, deviations in it. It does not need a newer version.

( الفرقان )Furqaan: Criterion/that which enables you to separate between right and wrong, good and bad.

( الکتاب ) Al-kitaab: The Book. One of the names of Quran.

 (الذکر)Al-zikr: Remembrance/mention (in it is the mention that which is good for mankind.

(تنزيل) Tanzeel: Revelation/that which comes down gradually. [ash-Shu’ara’: 192]

Status of Quran:

“Say, ‘In the bounty of Allah(the fact that quran has been sent down for us) and in His mercy - in that let them rejoice; it is better than what they accumulate’”.(people could ever collect).[Yunus: 58]

] وَهَٰذَا ذِكْرٌ مُبَارَكal anbiyaa[  

Barakah/Mubaarak(برکۃ/مبارک)  is that which is full of goodness, that which has abundant benefit in it.

Stay connected with Allah through quran. Wherever you are you want to make sure you have connection with your family etc. If you have any problem you can ask them for help.

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Allah has His own people among mankind.’ They said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, who are they?’ He said: ‘The people of the Qur’án, the people of Allah and those who are closest to Him.”

(Sunan Ibn e Majah, Book of Sunnah, Hadith no 214, Classified as Sahih By Allama Albani)

What is the virtue of learning and teaching the Quran?

"There is no sitting of people remembering Allah except that the angels will surround them, mercy covers them, peace descends upon them and Allah mentions them to those near Him.” (Muslim)

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “The best of you is the one who learns the Qur'an and teaches it.” [Bukhari]

If you want Allah to mention you, study the Quran.

Quran is in Arabic. In order to understand a book in a language other than the language that we speak, the best way is through the word to word translation. Therefore, in this course you will be able to understand the Quran in Arabic.

العلم صيد، والکتابۃ قيدہ۔

Knowledge is the animal of hunt. And writing it is going to harness the animal.

Surah Al-Fatihah: (The Opening)

وَلَقَدْ آتَيْنَاكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنَ الْعَظِيمَ 

‘And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur'an.’[al-Hijr:87]

History:

·         It has 7 verses ,25 words and 113 letters. It is a Makki  مکّي surah (revealed before the Prophet pbuh migrated to Madinah).

·         5th surah to be revealed in chronology and 1st to be revealed in its entirety.

Al-Fatihah:

(ف-ت-ح) = فتح  to open something. Fataha فتح  means ‘to remove a block,to remove confusion from something. It is the opening because:

-          It is the openenig surah/chapter of the Quran. Fatihatul Kitab  فاتحۃ الکتاب

-           It is the opening of Salah (Prayer).

Importance:

·         It is the mother of the Quran(Umm-ul-Kitab الکتابام ) and it is the seven repeated ayaat of the Quran. (Tirmidi).

o    In Arabic, the term ’Umm  امّ applies to concepts and objects which, in one form or another, bear inclusive connotation, or by virtue of which, assume the role of genitives.

o   Umm also refers to ‘the foundation/core’. It has the main themes/concepts which are mentioned in the Quran.

Other names are: Al-Salah الصلاۃ(the prayer), al-Shifa  الشفاء(the cure) al-Ruqiyyah  الرّقيۃ(the remedy), al- Hamd  الحمد(the praise), al-Asaas  الاساس(the base),Al-Kanz الکنز (the treasure), Saba’ al-Masani سبع المثاني (7 oft repeated verses),

*Multiple names show the importance and greatness of this surah.

Abu Sa`id Ar-Rafi` bin Al-Mu`alla (May Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Shall I teach you the greatest Surah in the Qur'an before you leave the mosque?” Then he (PBUH), took me by the hand, and when we were about to step out, I reminded him of his promise to teach me the greatest Surah in the Qur'an. He (PBUH) said, “It is `Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil `Alamin (i.e., Surat Al-Fatihah) which is As-Sab` Al-Mathani (i.e., the seven oft-repeated Ayat) and the Great Qur'an which is given to me.” (Sahih Bukhari).

This Surah was a special gift given to the Prophet Pbuh.

Ibn `Abbas said, “While Jibril (Gabriel) was with the Messenger of Allah , he heard a noise from above. Jibril lifted his sight to the sky and said, `This is a door in heaven being open, and it has never been opened before now.’ An angel descended from that door and came to the Prophet and said, `Receive the glad tidings of two lights that you have been given, which no other Prophet before you was given: the Opening of the Book and the last (three) Ayat of Surat Al-Baqarah. You will not read a letter of them, but will gain its benefit.”

(Sahih Muslim & Sunan Nisai)

It is recited in every raka’ah of salah(prayer).

Narrated ‘Ubada bin As-Samit: Allah’s Apostle said, “Whoever does not recite Al-Fatiha in his prayer, his prayer is invalid.” (Bukhari)

One of the principles agreed upon by the Salaf and their Imams is to have faith in Allah and His Attributes, and in the rules determining how they are to be received. So, for example, they believe that he is Rahman and Rahim, possessing the quality of mercy which is extended to its recipients. Therefore, all blessings are one of the resultant effects of this mercy. This principle holds true for all of His Names.[Sa’di)

Question: Is the Basmalah an Actual Verse of Soorah Al-Faatihah or Not?

“The scholars hold differing opinions about this issue. Some say that it’s definitely a verse from AlFaatihah and it should be recited aloud in those prayers which are recited out-loud. They believe

it’s not correct unless the Basmalah is recited since it is part of Al-Faatihah. Other scholars say that it’s not a verse of Al-Faatihah. Rather, it’s a separate verse from the book of Allaah. This latter opinion is the correct one and is proven by other texts as well as the context of the chapter itself.

As for the textual proof, Abu Hurayrah (R.A) narrated a Hadeeth that the Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Allaah says, ‘I have divided the prayer in two parts between Myself and my servant.’ When the servant recites, All praise and thanks are to Allaah, the Lord of all creations, Allaah says, ‘My servant has praised Me.’ And when he recites, The Most-Merciful, the Bestower of all mercy, Allaah says, ‘My servant has honored Me.’ When he recites, The Owner of the Day of Recompense, Allaah says, ‘My servant has glorified Me.’ When he recites, You alone we worship and You alone we seek help from, Allaah replies, ‘This is two parts between my servant and I.’ When he recites, Guide us to the straight path…(till the end of the surah) , Allaah replies, ‘This is for My servant and he will have what he asks for.’”[Muslim:395]

So, three verses are for Allaah and they are the first three. Three verses are for the servant and they are the last three. One verse is between both the servant and his Lord and it’s the fourth and middle verse.

Siraatal lazeena anamta alaihim is the 6th verse, ghairil maghdoobi alaiyhim waladdaallin is  the 7th verse.

A lot of “ugly” food

-Won’t survive distribution bc weird shapes makes it prone to getting smushed, bruised, start to rot, & make everything else in the box/crate rot. Broken skin does the same thing.

-Most “ugly” produce gets turned into soups, sauces, salsa, jam, ice cream, etc. You think that stuff gets made from the pretty fruit & veggies?! jeebus, think about it for a minute

-The amt of produce wasted bc of labor problems (can’t get a crew to harvest) & bad weather (melons that rot in the field bc it’s too hot & wet, etc) WAY outstrips produce thrown out bc it’s “ugly.”

Bc again….. We eat a LOT ugly produce. You just wouldn’t know it be it’s salsa.

As someone who works in produce, this whole “ugly fruit” movement is actually kind of enraging bc it’s completely disconnected from what really happens in the supply chain. It’s a big honkin wad of bullshit that self-promoting foodies get away with be nobody knows better.

After it leaves the farm, most produce goes to a packinghouse. This is where they cool, wash, sort, & package it. In other words, it’s where the ugly fruit people think all this “waste” is happening.

The only time packinghouses throw out fruit is when IT’S ACTUALLY INEDIBLE

Like it’s either rotten or (in the case of 1 watermelon field that one time) it had rained so hard that the melons filled up w water and were completely tasteless. Also about to explode.

Produce gets graded by size, prettiness, and (sometimes) flavor/eating quality.

Know what happens to most of the produce that’s edible, has enough shape to survive in transit, but looks funny?

IT GOES TO THE GROCERY STORES THAT POOR PEOPLE SHOP AT

In the broke times of my life I did not shop at farmers’ markets, bc they’re at bizarre times when working class people are usually working or sleeping (late service sector nights > no 7am Saturday farmer’s market for you). FM’s are built around the 9-5 white collar schedule,

Most of your real poor ppl, when buying produce, get it from shops white collar ppl don’t go to.

Those shops stock ugly produce.

That white collar ppl don’t go to. Then conclude, looking at their nice stores stocked w pretty #1 produce, that nobody’s eating the ugly stuff.

So there’s one beef. The “eat ugly fruit!” movement is classist as FUCK. You’ve got to have a debilitating level of ignorance to assume that if Whole Paycheck Market doesn’t stock ugly fruit, it must be getting “wasted."🙃

Back to the packinghouse. When produce is EXTREMELY UGLY, it goes into cull bins. My fave cull bins to date:

-Sweet potatoes. Did you know that they make a *lot* of giant, freaky-shaped spuds? Like a rat king of sweet potatoes, somewhere btw football & basketball sized.

What happens to these ugly, unloved sweet potatoes? OH WAIT THEY GET LOVED, THAT’S WHERE MOTHERFUCKIN SWEET POTATO FRIES COME FROM

-Apples. We love to *say* we don’t mind "spots on our apples,” but actual sales data tells us really, really do.

And honestly, we should. Even “cosmetic” lesions can make micro-breaks in the apple’s skin, allowing fungus to enter. One rotten apple, barrel, etc.

Fugly apples ARE WHERE APPLE JUICE AND APPLE SAUCE AND APPLE CIDER AND APPLE BUTTER AND APPLE JELLY AND APPLE PIE COME FROM “wasted” my ass

THEY’RE GONNA JUICE THAT SHIT

Did you know: Honeycrisp apples are extra prone to a mostly-cosmetic skin defect called bitter pit?

Ergo, most Honeycrisp apples become apple juice.

That’s why whole, fresh, pretty Honeycrisp apples cost so fricken much. Because most of them become cheap bulk juicers.

Yes, every once in a while you’ll run into a variety of produce that only really works for fresh & doesn’t lend well to processing. This mostly happens w leafy greens (we don’t make … lettuce sauce), which is such a minuscule amt of the produce tonnage grown per year.

When produce is too far gone to sell & there’s no processing market (say, melons), it often gets fed to livestock.

That's… actually a lot of the point of livestock, historically. They eat stuff we can’t & turn it into meat, milk, & eggs that we can.

Feeding crop & food waste to livestock also means we’re not having to use as much livestock-only cropland. Just assume that most years a certain %age of human food crops will get messed up & become livestock feed, and that’s less pasture/grain land needed for livestock.

That Listeria outbreak in cantaloupe back in 2011? As best we can tell it happened bc they fed ugly melons to cattle.

Which, in itself, is fine.

The problem is they kept driving the truck back into the cantaloupe shed AFTER getting its tires caked in cow shit during deliveries.

This whole “ugly fruit! uwu” thing is bewildering bc in order to believe that retail consumers can change the world by buying ugly fruit,

you have to believe that the entire supply chain is made of numpties who make a regular habit of leaving money on the table.

The food system is a hot mess but using ugly produce is one thing it’s actually really good at. Using every single part of what’s grown, if there’s any possible way to sell it.

The one big source of food waste that I *do* worry about is crops that are perfectly good, and rot in the field bc the farm can’t get anybody to harvest them. (Orrrrr they don’t want to pay enough for people to come harvest them.)

These labor shortages come down to 2 things:

1) Bad immigration policy

2) Farm biz models that can’t survive a competitive labor market

(which kinda tends to feed back into that first one)

We SHOULD be worried about THAT. And “buy ugly fruit!” does fuck-all to address it.

But those aren’t fun problems to fix, because they’re not the kinds of problems that the everyman consumer can fix by just making a simple yes/no choice in the supermarket.
