i am "hua cheng is pathetic" advocator no. 1 and that's because it's true. he is so pathetic and that's a key part of his character. but it's really funny to remember that that's Only when he's around xie lian. hua cheng is the sweetest little puppy dog eyes guy around xie lian but his reputation is for realzies! he destroys people's lives and is sinister and uncaring and watches people ruin themselves in his gambling hall for funzies and is entertained by suffering just as a ghost king should be! the man makes it rain blood in his dramatic moments! but the moment xie lian rolls up he's all silly giggling blushing kicking his feet going "noooo babe don't worry you're doing soooo good at dice rolling..." gayass. he has destroyed gods

And that's what i love about him, like he's one of the strongest guys out there but when xie lian is there he is just a poor damsel in distress who doesn't know any better, and the best part is that xie lian realizes this is just an act but still acts like the prince in shining armor and treats hua cheng like hes just a sweet little guy even if he knows hua cheng is totally capable of protecting himself

incredibly important point you are absolutely right. a huge part of it is hua cheng putting on his best golden retriever boyfriend impression and going "oh my gosh wow you're so big and strong..." tucking his hair behind his ear etc. etc. but an even bigger part of it is xie lian absolutely knowing that he's putting on an act and playing along just for funzies :)

postcanon is just mq and fx going "dude. hua cheng did something terrible" and xie lian going "hm 🤔 that doesn't sound like something san lang would do 🤨" (<— it absolutely sounds like something hua cheng would do) (everyone in this room is aware that hua cheng absolutely could and would do this) (nobody in this room believes that hua cheng is innocent) (xie lian is just kind of being a cunt. for fun)
