nolan’s odyssey is such a textbook study on the idiocy and dangers of presentism. yes of course penelope is a modern day feminist who wants to rule ithaca by herself. they make telemachus say that GREECE IS THE GREATEST CIVILIZATION IN THE WORLD as if the entire point of the massing of achaeans at troy for one unified cause isn’t spectacular precisely because THERE IS NO CONCEPT OF A UNIFIED GREECE NATIONS DO NOT EXISTTTTTT YETTTTT. literally 101 on historical writing is making sure that you’re avoiding strict periodization because the people living in a “period” will not identify themselves that way. ever. five million cheeky nods to “the sea peoples” but we’re being cute and coy and calling them “the people from the sea.” the obsession with xenia but refusal to call it xenia yes let’s say “zeus’s law” a hundred times and reduce it to the literal expectation that any stranger could be a god in disguise. how was penelope just hanging out in the main hall of the palace with her husband’s dinner guests while they were playing with weapons with her HAIR COMPLETELY DOWN no veil no nothing just chilling casually. comical. stoppppp making movies that engage in historical viewpoints if you’re going to slather a modernized coat of paint over the top. “the past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.” or fucking whatever.
straight people: i love you.
gay people: strike me down. you’ve won. i’ve lived my whole wretched life at your mercy, yours alone, and God knows i deserve to die at your hand. you are my only friend. i am undone without you.
I often think about what a goddamn feat, what an astonishing creative trial it would be to film Nona the Ninth as a live-action, purely thinking about actors. Because like,
on one hand, you've got two actors who up until now have played Harrow (and a bit of Gideon) and G1deon (with a liiittle bit of Pyrrha) now playing Pyrrha and Nona. It's wildly different characters, wildly different mannerisms and speaking styles, with a completely opposite dynamic. That in itself would be amazing to watch two good actors pull off.
But then
You've got Camilla's body now housing Camilla and Palamedes.
Can you imagine the tape recorder scene?
Nona presses play and starts listening, then the visual cuts to a shot of Camilla, sat down recorder in hand, halfway through her line before pressing pause and rewind, then she closes her eyes for a half second and when she opens them it's Palamedes, with Palamedes's body language, pressing play and hearing the line again, reacting with a whole different set of expressions.
The whole conversation, delivered through a single shot that slowly zooms in, then out, on that one actor. Camilla almost giving a small, dry half-smile as she deadpans “You thought it was your agenda? Huh”, Palamedes hearing it play back and taking a moment because his eyes are getting teary, then “I cannot bear the thought of losing you”, Camilla then bringing a hand to her own cheek because it's wet? Then “Love and freedom can't coexist, Warden” and Camilla giving herself a hug so Palamedes can wake into it.
After the conversation is done, looking strained, Camilla immediately takes a tissue to her nostril—when she takes it away, here's some blood on it.
Do you see my vision. I think a scene like that, well-executed, would take out most of us.
Ofc you'd also have that actor playing Paul, who would keep some mannerisms but integrate them into a new, confident body language, and also Palamedes being played briefly (and up to one of the most emotional scenes) by the actor for Naberius, who would mostly have been playing Ianthe, and then the actor for Ianthe shows up at the end—and, unless we're doing a double casting, she might have been playing Crown until then.
My odyssey notes. Overall quite a good movie. The things done well were done REALLY WELL. When he plucked his bow at the suitors i turned to the person i was sitting with and clapped my hands and grinned it was done so well. It did feel a bit out of place/mischaracterised that Odysseus felt guilt over the Trojan Horse (???) so that lowers it down to like a 7.5/10
Thinking about this again but if he wanted to show the effects of the War he should have adapted the Iliad?? It does a much better in my opinion of showing the futility and balances both sides out while also being genuinely enjoyable? It really gets across the pity of war and the politics and in my opinion does a much better job of displaying the massacres. Rereading War Music after this one
i don’t think we as a fandom face the absolute enigma that is harrowhark as critically as we should
she is made up of 200 souls? ok cool, what affect has that had on her necromantically? why can she use necromancy in the river and at her absolute physical and mental lowest, when it is made clear by the lyctors AND god that both of those things are near impossible for a necromancer akin to harrow? how did harrow capture and preserve multiple souls from the river and keep them in a bubble completely subconsciously? why is she compared to anastasia at every given moment by those that knew her? how did harrow single-handedly break every single meticulously placed and tailored ward into the locked tomb in adolescence?
skill only goes so far, something else is present within her and i wish so badly to find out what it is

gideon: i hate harrow because she doesn’t treat me like a human being
gideon when harrow tries to treat her like a human being: woah woah woah, stop this! you’re going to make the readers think we’re gay for each other. do you have brain damage.
Don’t think we appreciate enough how tlt escalates between the first two books. By the time the literal God of this universe is vaporising in and out of existence and demons borne of a rogue dead planet’s soul are coming for all the main characters like it’s fucking wh40k, it’s easy to forget that about a novel and a half ago this was basically just a sci fi murder mystery with serious gay undertones.

ianthe: harry can't POSSIBLY love you, nav; she lobotomized herself to forget about you! to love is to remember!
not five pages earlier: gideon waxing poetic about how harrow tenderly wrapped gideon's sunglasses (that harrow allegedly hated btw) and sealed them tightly in an envelope for eight months on the OFF CHANCE gideon came back in some way shape or form
gideon: yeah seems legit. i mean she didn't even seem happy when i died for her so like.
Mini Alecto rant because I think she’s one of the most compelling characters ever written and we don’t even know her that well yet.
We are first introduced to her as the Body in Harrow the ninth (I mean we knew about her before but I’m talking interactively) and she’s basically Harrow’s rock. She has this calm air about her that provides comfort to Harrow. She courts Harrow, has dinners with her where they talk about anything, and prays with her. She’s Harrow’s partner in crime when she agrees with her that Gideon Zero needs to die. She protects Harrow; instructing her to lie. She has no qualms about Harrow’s desperation for her and looks at Harrow with pity when she regrets it. She takes it as her personal duty to save Harrow’s body at the end of htn, performing cpr, because she truly does care about Harrow and that’s what I’m getting at here; she cares about Harrow a lot. She’s also calm, cool, and collected.
Yet all the remaining Lyctors (save for Pyrrha and Gideon) seem to hate her. A lot of them apparently didn’t like her. They call her a monster. Which is a sharp contrast from what we’ve seen so far, in terms of the Body’s likability. Not to mention that Harrow notices that the Body doesn’t seem too fond of John either when she catches her staring at him (god I love that scene where John drops his bag? on her lap and Alecto just keeps staring at him unmoved, I yearn for their story), so like, what happened between all of them? I know Alecto hates necromancy and Lyctorhood but why call her a monster? What did she do?
Then later, this piece of Alecto’s soul, the Body, enters Harrow to become Nona (why Alecto did that is yet to be revealed) and Nona is a stark contrast to it. She’s this bubbly, sunshine person who’s ditsy in an adorable way and who loves everyone and everything. So yeah, Alecto can also be bubbly. That’s until Nona starts remembering who she is. Who’s that you may ask? Oh yeah, the fucking soul of the Earth! I mean, what? Talk about an insane lore drop. She feels for planets when they are shit talked (New Rho, Drearburh) cause they are her family. Isn’t that crazy? She’s a planet. She’s THE planet. The life giving planet. She’s life itself. She’s God.
That’s when the coke starts hitting because she is the soul of the Earth and she was dying and she picked John to save her and that was how he repaid her? By putting her in a body she deems hideous (because she’s not really fond of human beings actually) after wounding her original body? Killing her siblings? Nona’s in the process of remembering all this and loses her sparkle. Nona the six month old. Alecto the 4.5 billion+ year old. Nona grows colder, both physically and mentally, as she remembers herself. She’s fucking disgusted by the state of things. She’s angry. She lets Pyrrha know this. She gets embarrassed. She cries. She’s the soul of the Earth and she’s six months old and she’s hurting and she’s aware she’s killing Harrow and she blames herself for everything; she just wants to die. She finally wants to let go. Look at what trying to hold on did to the universe, right? The bubbly, calm, caring soul of the Earth is also, disgusted, cold, righteously furious, depressed, and is currently a six month old baby having a panic attack while completely falling apart. She also laughs at butt jokes. Atp, your skin starts itching with the need to know more and more about her.
Then she wakes up after ten thousand years, still angry. Angry because John. Angry because she remembers everything she was, everything she could have been, what she is now. Angry as she sees Pyrrha and talks to her. Angry still, as her eyes land on Harrow. She remembers Harrow and something about her irritates, calms, and even pleases her. This being because she realizes Harrow (after biting her lips off) is a descendant of the one person who seems to bring her any sort of peace, a person she, the soul of the Earth, vowed her entire being to: Anastasia. Why is that? She makes the same vow to Harrow because of this fact. She’s unamused by Harrow’s self deprecation but pleased by Harrow’s strength. She forces Harrow to accept her vows despite subtly agreeing that Harrow is too lowly to receive them. Then there is the whole reunion with John where she nonchalantly swords him through the heart with Harrow draped above her other hand. What I’m trying to say is: Alecto is fucking cold, detached, bossy, and swaggy. Which is, yet again, an insane contrast to her other two personalities.
Not to mention she screams blood and flesh and the sound comes from every part of her body. All this while you sit with the fact that the Earth is a conscious being that is fully aware of herself, her skin, and her body; with the ability to grant godlike gifts to fucking randoms, who are also her. Plus she speaks in old english. That’s sick.
…
Tldr: The whiplash from seeing the caring and comforting Body and Nona also be the same cold, detached, angry Alecto is what captivates me. They all seem so completely different from the other but they are all her. I guess she’s responsible for creating 11 billion unique souls too so this isn’t hard for her but that idea alone is equally insane. The fact that she’s the soul of the Earth is insane. People don’t freak out enough about her character. She’s enthralling. I need the next book so bad it physically hurts.

I’ve read the epilogue of Nona the ninth a million times because I can’t get enough of everything that transpires there but one of the scenes I love the most is this one:
Harrow not thinking much about herself and Alecto being immediately over it. Alecto essentially agreeing with what Harrow said albeit the scion being a heap on the floor; being pleased about why she fainted. Their dynamic is going to be so intriguing and nothing like Harrow expected because they are kind of…incredibly similar to each other.
Harrow: o blessed vision, I am but a lowly worm—
Alecto: well that's neither here nor there, is it
considering that Kiriona is in need of chest reconstruction necrosurgery, one of the funniest callbacks we could get in Alecto would be to “Harrow, if my heart had a dick you would kick it”
