just wondering how Zuko and Druk might have met..
Zutara are parallels in every possible ways, yet they didn't end up together, and other shipper expect me to not upset about it?
I haven’t posted here in forever : o
fucking hate it when the stuff everybody says "actually works" does actually work.
hate exercising and realizing i've let go of a lot of anxiety and anger because i've overturned my fight-or-flight response.
hate eating right and eating enough and eating 3 times a day and realizing i'm less anxious and i have more energy
hate journaling in my stupid notebook with my stupid bic ballpoint and realizing that i've actually started healing about something once i'm able to externalize it
hate forgiving myself hate complimenting myself more often hate treating myself with kindness hate taking a gratitude inventory hate having patience hate talking to myself gently
hate turning my little face up to the sun and taking deep breaths and looking at nature and grounding myself and realizing that i feel less burdened and more hopeful, more actually-here, that i am able to see the good sides of myself more clearly, that i am able to see not only how far i have to grow - but also how much growth i have already done & how much of my life i truly fill with light and laughter and love
horrible horrible horrible. hate it but i'm gonna do it tho

i need him so bad ep.10000
+ bonus content “i want to be their third”:
Blonde hair is so romanticized and sought after and brown hair is considered plain but consider: we’ve actually got eyebrows.
me wondering if im really blonde because i got eyebrows
The fact that the ATLA writers were originally making the Southern Raiders episode “too shippy” for Bryke and Bryke had to constantly tell them to make it more and more toxic to prevent any sort of shipping moments makes me almost as happy as the fact that Bryke’s attempts still backfired
Wow. Is this true?
Yep. Look up the Ehasz couple. Everyone thinks Bryke wrote ATLA but these people literally came up with all of the great ideas (i.e.: Feminist Katara moments, Zuko’s redemption, etc) in spite of Bryke and wrote more Episodes than Bryke. They and other writers who wrote Zuko and Katara scenes were told by Bryke “make it look really bad and make our ship look better” a lot
Oh wow. That’s…
And all the kataangers thought us crazy.
I always knew there was no romance on Katara’s end.
Nope. Ehasz originally planned for four seasons but the rights were given away by the third season to do a movie because ~money~ Check out these blogs, these people worked on the show and / or are in contact with people like Gene Yang (who doesn’t know what the hell Bryke are doing or why they’re making him write the way they are, saying they’re making him write OOC and bad plots). @zephyrita @kataraandzuko

These are just a few links, there are many more. Basically you will find out that the fandom is greatly mistaken for believing that Bryke are the reason for ATLA’s quality, that they’re feminists, that they even came up with the iconic ideas, etc., and see how much of it others were really responsible for and what direction things originally would have gone
It’s been 100 years and I will always rise from the fire like a phoenix for a good Bryke Receipt Drag
remember when @jhenne-bean and we got the “there was supposed to be a season four where zuko and katara’s friendship would be explored” and he gave that WHOLE TALK TO YOU and also how they were told they had to “think of the six year olds” and also everything planned for s4 was AMAZING???
remember when the animation team gave us a zuko and katara epic HAIR BLOWING IN THE WIND STYLE POSTER
remember how bryke’s sense of “humor” about this whole thing was to tell young girls they were emotionally damaged for liking this ship and then to take people’s fanworks and mock them ruthlessly?
i hate feeling like a bitter tinhat conspiracy nut but given that i KNOW ehasz has said stuff about bryke DISCOURAGING zuko/katara and i know that he wanted to continue writing their friendship and develop that and see where it could go - i’m glad i at least have that awareness that bryke is garbage forever in my heart. :,) truly the most bitter of sweet victories
Aaron also was the one who guided Iroh’s character away from Zuko’s rigid trainer who turned out to be EVIL and in cahoots with Ozai all along ™ that Bryke had originally intended, because he thought it would be “too black and white” in terms of characterization and villainy. Thank goodness for that.
He also told us that execs ruined/stifled the merch, and that there was an Appa plush planned from the beginning, but it was shot down because “only girls would have wanted it.”
But yeah, cosigning all those Bryke receipts.
He also made Katara the feminist character she was.
Katara’s fight against Northern Water Tribe patriarchy? Originally Bryke wanted it to be for Aang, Aaron wanted it to be Katara fighting for herself as opposed to her entire existence constantly revolving around Aang.
He’s also the one that said to make Toph a revolutionary female character as opposed to the jock Bryke had originally in mind in competition for Katara to reinforce the Nice Guy™ trope, the one who made Azul into Azula, and with that the making of Mai and Ty Lee. The list goes on, but of course Bryke gets the credit for these feminist ideas even though they were completely opposite to what they originally had in mind
That’s why things like Katara’s treatment in the comics goes back to the one dimensional trophy in the comics. Originally she was the only girl, put in fulfill the Nice Guy Gets the Girl trope (originally many of her actions didn’t exist or revolved only around Aang, and originally Aang’s reason to save the world wasn’t because it was right, but to win Katara over), and it’s clear in her portrayal in the comics and LOK when it’s just Bryke in charge of the writing (even Gene Yang, who is forced to write what Bryke wants, expressed a dislike in the direction they’re telling him to take the comics for reasons like this). Same goes for Toph, another character Aaron Ehasz was responsible for and another whose end portrayal he isn’t happy with
CO 👏 SIGN 👏
Ok but is no one considering that maybe one of the reasons they didn’t wanna make Zutara canon was because it’d be giving Katara a relationship with someone who’s benefited from the genocide of her people? No, Zuko wasn’t directly responsible, but he still benefited
Except
1) That’s not even close to the reason why it didn’t happen
2) Even if it were, which it’s not, Mai literally got mad at Zuko for turning against the Fire Nation and its attempt at oppressing and demolishing the Earth Kingdom and Bryke did a last second Maiko – but a redeemed Zuko who sees that and all of the other things the Fire Nation did as bad isn’t a choice for Katara just because. With this logic, don’t ship Zuko with Aang, Sokka, Suki, Jin, or anyone else because of what his nation did, even after he learns his country was wrong and actively works against it to help the world.
3) The point of this entire post is now Bryke < Ehasz couple if you wanna stay relevant to the convo how about talking about how no one is considering that Bryke didn’t write anything worth while or the Ehasz couple need recognition for actually writing the show or something similar
Holy crap, this actually makes heaps of sense now. I was wondering why katara’s portrayal was so weak in LOK, I was so mad because I really liked how she grew in ATLA… and for suddenly her to be like fodder :/ … Omg he wanted a season 4!!! We could’ve had it alllllllll
DRAG 👏🏼 BRYKE 👏🏼
Some handy statistics to have around:
Sokka mentions his father exactly thirty one times throughout the course of Avatar: The Last Airbender. By contrast, Katara also mentions her mother thirty one times over the course of the series. The real kicker, though, is that Zuko mentions his father thirty seven times throughout the series.
Why, then, is Katara so often criticized for mentioning her mother so often? Let’s look at the times Katara mentions her mother, Sokka mentions his father, and when Zuko mentions his father.
Katara mentions her mother as a commonality – for example, when Jet mentions he lost his parents in a Fire Nation raid, she mentions she lost her mother in a Fire Nation raid. When Haru mentions that his father was taken by the Fire Nation, she mentions that her mother was killed by the Fire Nation. One of the only times she doesn’t do this is in The Crossroads of Destiny, when she’s talking to Zuko and again in The Southern Raiders. She only does this with Zuko and no one else in the Gaang or anyone else throughout the series, most likely because Zuko also lost his mother through direct actions of the Fire Nation’s leader, his father, and so he can understand how she’s feeling (You could make a case that Sokka also knows how Katara feels but only to a certain extent. Sokka admits in The Runaway that he can barely remember his mother’s face, and when he thinks of his mother, he sees Katara).
The reason why Katara is known for mentioning her mother so often is because she does it in emotionally charged moments. You’re much more likely to remember someone mentioning their mother while crying and touching the only thing they have left of her (betrothal necklace) as opposed to someone swapping stories about their father in casual conversation (as Sokka does). Zuko, when talking about his father, tends to pair it with the idea that he has to capture the Avatar to regain his honor and then his father will let him back home. His father also comes up when talking to Azula. You don’t see anyone criticizing Zuko for mentioning his father, it has just become a joke in the fandom.
Katara mentioning her mother has also become a joke in the fandom but people are criticizing her for it. People have been reducing her character to a few descriptive characteristics, being that she is annoying, she isn’t a good character, and that the only thing she ever does is cry over her mother, which aren’t even remotely close to how Katara was written as a character.
Check your privilege. Stop making Katara’s only personality trait to be her crying over her mother or a “whiny bitch”. That’s misogynistic patriarchal bullshit. Here’s some things that could be used to describe Katara instead:
She is an incredible healer. She heals herself after Aang burns her when he first tries to learn to firebend, uses the Spirit Water to heal Aang after Azula strikes him with lightning and heals Zuko after Azula strikes him with lightning. She heals Toph’s feet after Zuko accidentally burns her. Sokka, for some bizarre reason, never gets hurt in the series (until the finale) but I’m sure if he did in the seasons and episodes before the finale, Katara would heal him too.
She is the most powerful waterbender. This girl went up against Pakku (he sucks) and threw everything she had at him despite having no formal waterbending training previously. She held her own against him and came very close to defeating Pakku. She froze Azula and successfully captured her using her waterbending (and quick thinking). She held her own against Zuko, Azula, and an army of Dai Li agents. In fact, before Zuko stepped in to fight Katara in The Crossroads of Destiny, Katara was damn close to defeating Azula all by herself. Katara was Aang’s waterbending teacher and we all know that Aang wouldn’t have been able to defeat Ozai if Katara hadn’t taught him waterbending. When they left the Northern Water Tribe, she was deemed a master waterbender.
She allows herself to be emotional. She tells off Sokka after one sexist statement. She is visibly shown crying throughout the entire series. She opens up to Zuko about her mother in a way she’s never had a chance to. She shows her anger at the Gaang committing fraud, not just because she is the “caretaker” of the group but because she realizes how dangerous it could be if word of their exploits reach the Fire Nation capital and the Fire Lord & Co. realize that Aang is actually alive.
She is daring. She stole the waterbending scroll (which had its consequences) but that took guts, especially considering she stole the scroll from pirates. She dressed up as the Painted Lady and helped the village, while also taking out a huge Fire Nation factory. She went on a quest to find her mother’s killer and decided not to kill him which must have taken (I don’t want to keep saying “guts” but I am) guts to make that decision. She got herself arrested to free one earthbender and ended up breaking all of the earthbenders out of prison, not mention the fact that when Aang and Sokka tried to get her to go, she refused to leave the people in prison.
Katara is her own person and should be allowed to be her own person instead of reduced to a “whiny, annoying bitch” because she is still grieving for her mother. Which, in it’s own right, is nothing to be mocked. The grief process is a very real thing and those who haven’t experienced anything remotely similar to what Katara has gone through shouldn’t get to make fun of her for it while also reducing her character to something that isn’t true.
Tl;dr: Respect Katara and drink your respect women juice daily!
Katara being a total bamf

my favourite fanfic trope is “for some reason we have to platonically share this bed and there is so much sexual and romantic tension we can barely function and at some point during the night one of us is going to end up spooning the other and we’re going to wake up in the morning an awkward tangle of limbs but we’re both going to pretend to be asleep even though we’re actually awake because we think the other is asleep so we can lie like this for just a few more minutes”
YOU’RE SO RIGHT THOUGH
