Had a thought about the Western Air Temple episode this morning. I know people have already mentioned the fact that when Iroh talks to Zuko in the flashback, he says,
Iroh: "But if you keep an open mind, and an open heart, I promise you will find your own destiny someday."
And then KATARA is at the door. I love that! But I want to talk about the scene that comes after the Iroh flashback ends instead, and about what Katara says to Zuko once she walks into the room.
Yes, everyone knows she threatens Zuko about Aang and all that. But Katara also talks about the connection she had with Zuko in Ba Sing Se. This line IN PARTICULAR is going to hit extra hard in NATLA S3, isn't it?
Katara: You might have everyone else here buying your ... transformation, but you and I both know you've struggled with doing the right thing in the past. [...]
If NATLA adapts THIS SPECIFIC LINE in S3, it's going to have an even deeper meaning than it had in the animated show. Because in NATLA, this line won't be only a reference to the Crystal Catacombs under Ba Sing Se (which is a great moment, if pretty short-lived) but it will also refer to THIS!
Zuko and Katara were shown to have an even DEEPER bond in NATLA S2 than they had in B2, when they both teamed up as the Painted Lady and the Blue Spirit. Now during S3, they're going to have EVEN MORE of a shared past together, an understanding that began on the streets of Ba Sing Se, even before the Catacombs.
And that all brings us back to the Southern Raiders, of course (as it always does lol). I've always loved that scene by the cliff under the stars, and this line always caught my attention.
Katara: "Oh, everyone trusts you now?! I was the first person to trust you, remember? Back in Ba Sing Se. And you turned around and betrayed me, betrayed all of us!"
I remember watching this scene for the first time as a kid and thinking, "Woah! What happened in Ba Sing Se??" I missed out on a couple episodes back then when the show was airing, and so I had either missed or forgot about the Crystal Catacombs lol.
(That line also gives me huge HSM vibes with Gotta Go My Own Way lol. "What about trust?" (...) "And what about me?!" ngl lol)
Anyway. All that to say, my childhood self could have never imagined that years from now, the answer to the question of "what happened in Ba Sing Se" would be that the Painted Lady (my fav episode as a kid, still is lol) and the Blue Spirit (awesome character design) teamed up as vigilantes like superheroes, had a falling out in the Crystal Catacombs, and would eventually again be on the same side of the war as a team.
And I'm going to lose my mind all over again once all that build up in NATLA leads to this lol.
