OK lads but. Why is the r slur coming back. It's 2026. Why am I hearing so many of The Youth use this word liberally and at whim. Do you need me to ground you. Do I need to sit you on the naughty step. Do you need me to strap you into the Learning Chair and deliver a 4 hour lecture about the history of the r slur, ableism, and why using that word is neither big nor cool. Or do you just need me to punch you in the mouth.
Because people aren't going along with your "harsh insults are suddenly slurs now" game. Touch grass, get a glass of water, do literally anything else...
It's been considered a slur for over a decade, you sack of stale farts. The reason it's a slur is because it specifically refers to an outdated medical terminology for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This is a protected group, on account of the systemic ableism and the centuries of eugenics that determined that anyone branded with this word should be removed from society. That's the history you're deliberately invoking when you use that word to insult someone.
Similarly, insults that deliberately target other marginalised characteristics and communities such as race, sexuality, gender etc are also slurs. This is not a new, woke definition. This is literally just what the word means.
Harsh insults would be something like 'you absolute waste of atoms,' 'you condom full of ditchwater,' 'your parents should have traded you up for a Pokémon card at birth.' Harsh insults and slurs are not synonymous. Terribly sorry that you had to learn this via a public schooling on Tungle dot net.

Maybe it's weird of me, as a non-Jew, to feel like I can't trust anyone fully unless they're at least aware of the nuances of the I/P situation. But that's where I am, right now.
Very much as a matter of solidarity, but as self-protection, too. Because if someone's willing to be antisemitic, or at the very BEST an ally and useful stooge of antisemites, by forming a judgment on something so important without even considering there might be bias involved... well, what OTHER ideals that I hold sacred are they willing to compromise on? With literal fucking neo-Nazis? On what OTHER matter have they accepted majority opinion when they shouldn't, just because it feels good to have a crowd to march with?

Many people have been saying plenty of smart things in the past week after Disney yanked Jimmy Kimmel's show, but I haven't seen this mentioned and I want to resurrect this piece of history.
I imagine that this was just lost to time and all of the news generated by Trump, but in the first Trump administration, Jimmy Kimmel shared that his newborn had undergone heart surgery and appealed to people to support necessary health care spending, which the Trump administration was pushing to cut (the types of cuts that have now occurred):
I mention this not just because I want to remind people that this happened, but also because, I'll never forget this, shortly after this aired, I was on a trip and my mom and I ate lunch at a beautiful waterfront restaurant in Maine.
While we were eating our lobster rolls and enjoying the nice atmosphere, a group of the worst-people alive sat next to us. It was about eight well-off white people, with an even mix of men and women (I assumed it was four couples from their behavior with each other).
These people — seemingly well-off, healthy people with the ability to enjoy a weekday lunch together — proceeded to bring up this anecdote of Jimmy Kimmel going on air and crying about his newborn child and then vented their feelings about how absurd he was, how embarrassing it was for him to cry on air, how he was probably lying about his child's health and that no one cared about his baby. They were among the nastiest words I've ever heard from a group of people in public, and it was about a sick baby and his loving father. I keep them in the back of my mind when I need a reminder of how far people can fall from simply human empathy or even just basic decency.
Jimmy Kimmel will never know what those people said, but I remember his kindness then and their lack of it, it's stuck with me for these last several years, and I just want this one other thing that Jimmy Kimmel did once upon a time to not be fully lost from our collective memory.

It’s not just that the leaves will break down on their own (and enrich the soil while they’re at it!). During the winter, all sorts of insects use leaf litter for shelter, and they’re the first food available to larvae in early spring. Leaves also insulate the plants under them during the winter, which is important if you’re in an area prone to frost heaving.
One of the best thing you can do for native pollinators in your area is Leave the Leaves!
My mom stopped raking her leaves when she found out about this but her neighbor used his leaf blower to clear out her yard the first year she decided to try. So she started posting a Leave the Leaves sign in the yard each year with an explanation about why it’s good and two winters later only one house still rakes their lawn each year.
We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the biodiversity in the neighborhood since. We have birds that we haven’t seen since we moved into the city from living rurally and those birds are starting to nest in the trees and gardens in spring. The swallows and bats are back at night. The single woodpecker we would only occasionally see visits daily and even has a friend that has joined it. We have more squirrels and rabbits and shockingly fewer moles and voles. We heard an owl outside last fall.
Leave the leaves indeed.
You guys liked my firefly post?
