Guy who never feels like his problems are βbad enoughβ to be taken seriously: what if I hurt the character so horrifically that everyone around them could not possibly deny the severity of their pain even if the character themself tries to downplay it.

whumpee who knows that they are only worth keeping around as long as they are useful. they run about, doing the chores, waiting on caretaker's hand and foot, even as anxiety eats them alive. what are their expectations? what does caretaker want from them? how can they prolong their stay? everything is a transaction, but caretaker keeps allowing them things they shouldn't without some very special favours. whumper only used to grant such privilegesβ food on the table, consistent sleep on the daily, warm baths everydayβ in exchange for extremely good behaviour andβ things they'd rather not think about.
so this freaks them out like nothing else. they're afraid, out of their mind with the fear that racks up and upβ for what is given can be snatched away at any time. they can't let themself get used to it.
Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because theyβre used to writing essays rather than prose. I donβt wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesnβt offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (βdialogue tagβ just refers to phrases like βhe said,β βshe whispered,β βthey askedβ):
βFor most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and donβt capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,β she said.
βBut what if youβre using a question mark rather than a period?β they asked.
βWhen using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless itβs a proper noun!β she snapped.
βWhen breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,β she said, βuse commas.β
βThis is a single sentence,β she said. βNow, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so thereβs no comma after βshe said.ββ
βThereβs no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.β She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.
Big fan of Whumpers who can smash Whumpee into a wall with magic/powers. Either with a casual flick of the wrist that blasts them away, or with a powerful, aggressive sweeping motion, accompanied maybe by a roar of frustration.
Bigger fan when said Whumper then keeps Whumpee trapped against the wall just by outstretching his hand. Pressing them harder against the (broken) bricks. Better yet, when that hand tenses, fingers shape into a claw, and Whumpee grasps at their throat, at nothing, all air taken from them. Huge bonus when Whumper slowly walks up to them, all menace and threat, yes.
Biggest fan when Whumper then relaxes all muscles, drops his arm. And Whumpee drops right along like a ragdoll into the rubble, slowly slumping against the wall, or dropping forward (into Whumper's arms).

Y'all know Whumpee who gets conditioned to associate something with pain?
Think about that but with Whumpee's name.
Whumper makes sure to repeat Whumpee's name over and over every time they hurt them or torture them to the point that every time they hear their name, they flinch.
When they're rescued, it doesn't take long for everyone to realize that Whumpee starts crying and panicking when someone says their name. Now they have to figure out how to get around that without completely othering Whumpee.
"Whu- um... They asked me to give you this..."
"They need more medicine." "Who?" "Just... Them."
Eventually it could turn into only using pet names for them. Calling them Sweetheart like that's their name. When introducing Whumpee to someone, they get questioned on their "weird" name, but no one is willing to explain Whumpee's trauma to a stranger.
When the whumpee has someone they trust so much they always instinctively turn to them when in distress or pain. They get shot or stabbed or feel a poison kicking in and they're immediately turning to their person. Scared or confused eyes looking for the ones they'd always feel safest with.
caretaker trying to teach whumpee bodily autonomy after they've been conditioned to accept physical abuse
caretaker has no idea what they're doing. they took some self-defence classes half a decade ago but they know that trying to get whumpee to fight from the get-go would end with them collapsing and ugly crying into the boxing gloves.
they figure that this is probably way too much all at once and that whumpee needs much smaller steps. so caretaker orders them to say 'stop' to their face, watching whumpee tense up in horror. but they say it. blurted out at first but steadily getting more secure as they learn that they won't be punished. then caretaker (very slowly) walks towards whumpee, and orders them to say 'stop' before they can get close enough to touch. whumpee doesn't understand, like a deer in the headlights they freeze in place, eyes squeezed shut and knees buckling as caretaker walks directly at them.
whumpee can't even speak (the impossible choice ringing horribly in their head), not knowing if the defiance of staying silent or telling caretaker to stop would be worse. there are tears in their eyes. so caretaker reaches whumpee, seeing them tremble up close, pain stabbing at their chest in sympathy. immediately followed by numbing cold anger at whumper. but no matter how painful, this has to be done. whumpee had to learn that caretaker will listen. that their words have weight again. they try to keep the emotion out of their voice while telling them that, hey. it's ok. we can try again. it's ok if you don't get it right immediately, I can see that you're trying and that's really good! you're doing so good. can you try again for me?
it doesn't work, not at first, whumpee can't bring themself to say the word and it haunts them the entire night. they barely sleep at all, will they be punished if they keep failing? or will they be punished for succeeding and it was all just a test to teach whumpee their place. who are they to tell their new master 'no'. the thought makes them want to throw up. but caretaker keeps dragging them back to the practice room, slowly walking up to whumpee over and over and over again. they start to wonder if this is worth it, what if their efforts do nothing and traumatize whumpee all over again? so when they hear the tiny, almost inaudible 'stop' after what feels like ages(!) it makes caretaker stop dead in their tracks.
a beaming smile spreads across their face and they almost run to bury whumpee in the proudest, most affectionate hug of their life when they remember that moving now and ignoring the 'stop' would set them back to the beginning. so they breathe out deeply and tell whumpee that they're proud of them. that they did really well and that caretaker will make their favourite food as a reward. and hot chocolate. whumpee is still starting at the floor though, confused and terrified and in disbelief.
it will take a long time for whumpee to say 'stop' with confidence, caretaker thinks to themself, but they will get there. maybe they'll even say it outside of the training room one day

I'm just saying, if you're going to worldbuild magic being a "raw, primal force, akin to and interweaving with nature itself" you gotta explain to me why animals don't use it
I know the normal answer is "they just aren't smart enough for it" but idk I've seen enough media where a character uses a spell in a moment of brain-off panic ilI feel like animals could probably stumble into a spell or two like, accidentally
Caretaker doing simple things such as always asking Whumpee if they want a hug and not giving one if they say "no" to help Whumpee relearn that their consent matters, that their "no" matters
whumpee being taught that their no matters, having the chance to internalize that, to experience it over and over again is one of my favourite things in a recovery arc.
and one particular kind of moment in that part of an arc that has me captivated is like... when they're starting to trust it, when they want to trust it, but they just. they can't yet. and so they decide to test it. they say no when they don't actually mean no, they just want to see if it'll work. they want to see if they'll be allowed to say no, if their no will be heard.
and it is. their no is heard, and respected. they're not forced. they're not punished. they're not shamed. caretaker nods and says okay. no judgement. no drama. whumpee just stares at them, not quite able to believe it. they breathe, ragged and serrated, and stare at their friend, and it hits them that they never truly believed that it would actually work. not until right that moment did they realize they truly expected that no to be ignored.
but it isn't. it's heard. it's welcomed. they don't know how to process that at all. especially since they feel an inch from shattering and they want a fucking hug of all things but they just said no. what are they supposed to say? "sorry, i didn't mean that, i was testing you. i thought you'd force me anyway. will you hug me now? can i take it back?"

Whumpee hiding under the bed, and Caretaker coming along to lay on the floor beside the bed, looking over to talk to Whumpee at eye level, meeting them where they are instead of ordering them out from under the bed.
