alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!

The Japanese wisteria (lat. Wisteria floribunda). A species of woody climbing subtropical plants. The lilac flowers have a strong, sweet, floral fragrance, while the scent of the white flowers resembles grape juiceπΏ

immediately after an interaction: i have GOT to get more normal oh god i need to get more normal immediately i have to get more normal or they're going to hunt me down they're going to hunt me down and flay me for sport
during an interaction: and why not put a little spin on it? why not add some conversational zest?
Project Hail Mary means so much to me π. After watching the movie on opening weekend, I immediately started drafting this illustration and got a ticket to watch it again on IMAX. A 2-week vacation put a pause to working on the piece, but I'm so glad to finally finish and be able to share it! I wanted to memorialize the colors and feelings of my favorite moments and the art turned out exactly how I was picturing it in my head π₯Ή. It feels rare and special for that to happen!

Level of respect a class of teens I have to teach art to have for me when I walk in: 0%
Level of respect after I draw sasuke from memory on the whiteboard: beyond anything you could possibly imagine
the true reason i rarely teach classes is to keep my ego at bay

Meanwhile, in Lithuania...
(via Gabrielius Landsbergis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania, over at the Ex-Bird Place)
I remember when I was younger, anytime I watched a movie where the characters have to kill a scary monster/alien, I always thought the act of killing it was intended to be part of the horror. Like thereβs this amazing creature that weβve never seen before, and maybe under different circumstances we couldβve coexisted with it, but itβs trying to attack you and you have to defend yourself, but by destroying it you also destroy the ability to ever understand it and thatβs sad and is supposed to make you feel conflicted.
It was not until well into my adulthood that I realized most people do not have complicated feelings about movies where people have to kill a scary alien monster, nor is that necessarily meant to be part of the narrative (unless it very obviously is). They just want the scary thing to die because itβs scary. I donβt have a real conclusion to this I just started thinking about it for some reason.
One of my biggest literary pet peeves is when historical or history-inspired fiction pretends that "courting" is a synonym for "dating". Usually it's just a one-to-one word swap--in a modern context, these characters would be dating, but this is olden times, so they call it courting instead. Sometimes they'll pretend there's a shade of difference, and that courting is a more serious exploration of marriage or something. But I read a lot of fiction that was actually written during these historical eras, and the word "courting" is never used like that.
Two people do not decide that they are "courting". One person decides to "court" someone else. It's an action, not a stage in the relationship. A man decides to court a woman because he wants to encourage her to have romantic interest in him. He's trying to win her favor. It's not an exclusive relationship--a woman could be courted by multiple men at once. She'll spend time getting to know the guy who's interested in her, but they won't officially define their relationship as one where they only show romantic interest in each other. If they reach a point where they want it to be exclusive, that's when you propose.
There's no middle ground--either you're getting to know each other, or you're committed to marrying each other. This idea of a period where you kind of commit to each other until you decide you definitely want to get married is a modern one, and it occurs in eras where they use the word "dating" to describe it. The closest equivalent I can think of are times and places where they'd talk about a couple "stepping out together", but they're still not calling it "courting". Words have meaning, and the word "courting" has never meant that, so stop using it that way!
the other mild historical disjoint i run into is when people talk about dating in the fifties like it automatically meant exclusivity. the whole reason we have the expression "going steady" is because the default was to or "go around with" or "go out with" multiple people. not in the sense of being in a stable polyamorous vee, but in the sense that archie is actively "seeing" both betty and veronica during the entire time the two girls are competing for his attention and they're both seeing other guys to make him jealous, and nobody involved considers this "cheating."
bizarrely, America has in many ways gotten more conservative about dating since World War II.
I ran into a truly wild cultural misunderstanding with my father some years ago, when I had to explain to him what βhookup cultureβ actually was, and that the thing he assumed it was was actually what we call βcruising cultureβ. His response was βhow is that different from dating?β and when I explained how it was different, he said, and please note that this a direct quote: βThatβs ridiculous! You canβt expect a woman to stop fooling around with other guys for anything less than a marriage proposal. I mean, sheβs not a prostitute, you canβt buy her.β Now obviously thereβs likeβ¦ a lot to unpack there, but I think itβs pretty darn illustrative of a substantive cultural shift around the assumption of monogamy!
Also, following this, I asked my mom what her thoughts were on the matter, and she said that while she βwouldnβt put it in those termsβ she broadly agreed, and thought that anyone expecting any sort of exclusivity when a marriage proposal wasnβt at least on the very immanent horizon was βnuts, honestly.β I hesitantly asked if she was including relationships with premarital sexual activity in that, and her response was βOf course. I mean, gosh, you know your Aunt Terri used to have a guy for every day of the week before she finally settled down.β
And this was when I learned, to my shock, that the oft-repeated story of how βAunt Terri used to have a guy for every day of the weekβ didnβt just mean βAunt Terri had a full dance cardβ but rather meant that Aunt Terri had a period of her life where she literally dated exactly seven guys at once, all of whom she was sleeping with (or, my mom was quick to disclaim, βwell, fooling around with, I donβt know how far she actually went with any of them, but they were definitely all fooling around behind closed doorsβ), on a literal weekly rotation. Like, they had a schedule. A schedule that all seven of the guys knew.
America has gotten a lot more conservative about dating, actually.

one time I saw a photo of a skinned whale/dolphin flipper on reddit or something and I've just never recovered
there's just. A paw in there.
One of the most spiritually profound moments of my life was when I was sixish and at a natural history museum with my parents that had a whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling.
I remember my dad picking me up to sit on his shoulders (possibly one of the last times he did that because I was getting too big to hold there for long) so I could be close to it's flipper because he wanted to show me something. He had me hold up my arm parallel to the whale's, and explained that we had the same bones, pointing to it's scapula and humerus and radius and ulna and so on while poking the same bones in my skinny little arm, all they way down to the tips of my fingers and it's own.
And in that moment, I could suddenly see how the whale and I were the same animal, just stretched and shrunk into different proportions by nature. There was an entire exhibit with skeletons of different animals and we went through all of them, picking out the hands and faces of all of them on myself.
I had never felt such a profound connection to the world around me before as I realized on a visceral level that not only was I related to all these creatures, they were very literally my distant cousins, and that in a way, they were me from back then and I was them from now, and we all were others still from the future.
Every living thing on earth is your cousin. The most distantly related humans are your 50th cousins. Chimps are your several thousandth cousins. An octopus is your 25 millionth cousin. Trees are your billionth cousins. You and I are surrounded by family. And that makes me feel profoundly loved.
So thanks dad, for pulling your shoulder a bit to show me that I am part of the universe. I love you too.
