STILL ON PATROL
I learned something new and horrifying today which is⌠that⌠no submarine is ever considered âlostâ âŚÂ there is apparently a tradition in the U.S. Navy that no submarine is ever lost. Those that go to sea and do not return are considered to be âstill on patrol.â
?????
There is a monument about this along a canal near here its⌠the worst thing I have ever seen. it says âSTILL ON PATROLâ in huge letters and then goes on to specify exactly how many WWII submarine ghosts are STILL OUT THERE, ON PATROL (it is almost 2000 WWII submarine ghosts, ftr). Here is the text from it:
âU.S. Navy Submarines paid heavily for their success in WWII. A total of 374 officers and 3131 men are still on board these 52 U.S. submarines still on patrol.â
THANKS A LOT, U.S. NAVY, FOR HAVING THIS TOTALLY NORMAL AND NOT AT ALL HORRIFYING TRADITION, AND TELLING ALL OF US ABOUT IT. THANKS. THANK YOU
anyway now my mother and I cannot stop saying STILL ON PATROL to each other in ominous tones of voice
Thereâs definitely something ominous about thatâthe implication that, one day, they will return from patrol.
dog: BARK
me (with the same tone and volume): WHAT
when u gotta form voltron
So Iâm rewatching voltron and I noticed in the beginning, when the Commader is yelling at Lance, Pidge, and Hunk, the Commander threatens Lance, reminding him that heâs only a pilot because Keith flunked out. And then Lance gives him this face:
Look at this sensitive kid trying to keep it together, he looks like heâs about to CRY with the way his eyes are watering. Which isnât much different than this pretty famous scene later on in the show:
I guess my point is that Lance is a crier!! But he keeps it together for his team, either because he doesnât want them to worry about him, or because he doesnât want them to lose morale

How many times did this happen already that they knew to record it?? Is this the local legend of that town??Â
These rare color photos of Paris were taken over 100 years ago.Â
In 1909, a wealthy French banker named Albert Kahn wanted to document the world using a new color photo process called Autochrome Lumière, so he commissioned 4 photographers to take their cameras all over the world.
One of the cities they documented was Paris.
Starting in 1914, Kahnâs photographers, Leon Gimpel, Stephane Passet, Georges Chevalier and Auguste Leon, documented life in Paris using color filters made from dyed potato starch grains.
They made these color photos over a century ago (with a small amount of color enhancing done on the original shots).
In addition to the many shots of Paris, around 72,000 Autochromes from around the globe were created through Kahnâs project.

People have been asking for the Hawaiian values I was talking about so this is my attempt but they are hard to explain in English. Okay so while these arenât all Hawaiian values these were the ones I felt like I knew the most and could describe the best. Most of these definitions I found online, I just added the background info and a little bit to the definitions.
Background info: Hawaiians have a very strong symbiotic relationship with the land (âÄina). Our creation legend is actually very similar to the beginning of the greeks. First there was chaos (I believe the name was Po?) and then came Papa and Wakea, the Earth and the Sky. Papa gave birth to the islands and the Stars. The Stars and the Sky have a child, but the child is a stillborn. They bury the child and with the mothers tears the first kalo plant grows (taro). The second child is Haloa aka man. So the reason we have these values and such is because there is this familial connection to the world around us. We take care of the âÄina and it will provide for us. This symbiosis is the key to why these moral values mean so much. Like reason we value these things is basically because we owe the earth, our family, our ancestors, the plants, the animals, the ocean, the sky, we owe all of them for our existence and when you follow these values you are honoring them and all they have done for you. The english translations donât really hold that same weight, they are just words, they donât have the generations of meaning behind them.
ALOHAâ Aloha is a value, one of unconditional love. Aloha is the outpouring and receiving of the spirit. This is so important, like it is so prevalent in Hawaii. I have never experienced a community be more loving.
HOâOHANAâ The value of work: To work with intent and with purpose. As in, donât be lazy or half ass something for that wonât produce good products.
HOâOMAUâ The value of perseverance. To persist, to continue, to perpetuate. Never give up.
HOâOKIPAâ The value of hospitality, a hospitality of complete giving. Welcome guests and strangers with your spirit of Aloha. We treat most people like family unless they have proven themselves to be rude or undeserving, thatâs why tourism starting in Hawaii actually.
âOHANAâ Those who are family, and those you choose to call your family. As a value, âOhana is a human circle of complete Aloha. Family doesnât mean blood here. Like if someone has disrespected you and doesnât act pono you donât have to keep calling them family, however we give a lot of second chances. And almost all family friends are just family. Like I might not be related to them, but they are still family.
LĹKAHIâ The value of teamwork: Collaboration and cooperation. Harmony and unity. People who work together can achieve more.
KÄKOUâ The value of communication, for âAll of us.â We are in this together. Learn to speak the language of we. Basically the hawaiian version of âweâre all in this togetherâ
KULEANAâ Oneâs personal sense of responsibility. âI accept my responsibilities, and I will be held accountable.â This one is super important. When someone says that something is your kuleana it means that this is very important. For example it is our kuleana to pick up litter. If we donât then the land will suffer. However by just saying kuleana that second sentence is implied.
âIKE LOAâ The value of learning. To know well. To seek knowledge and wisdom.
HAâAHAâAâ The value of humility. Be humble, be modest, and open your thoughts.
HOâOHANOHANOâ To honor the dignity of others. Conduct yourself with distinction, and cultivate respectfulness. This is why we call people older than us Aunty and Uncle, why we call our elders Tutu. Why you always bring food to someones house and offer to clean up.
MÄLAMAâ The value of stewardship. To take care of. To serve and to honor, to protect and care for.
MAHALOâ âThank youâ, as a way of living. Live in thankfulness for the richness that makes life so precious. Granted we donât say this as a moral value as much as the others, but it is still important. Like saying please is important, but if you donât say thank you you are in huge trouble because you arenât respecting those around you.
PONOâ The value of integrity, of rightness and balance. The feeling of contentment when all is good and all is right. I donât really like the way they defined this, it is so much more than that, but this one there really is no proper english equivalence. Itâs like doing the right thing because it is right, because this is what is expected of you as a Hawaiian. I have a really hard time explaining it. To be pono is to do the right thing. but itâs more than that. itâs like with kuleana, you are pono because you do your kuleana. because to be pono is to respect all those who came before you and all those who come after you. If an aunty tells you that you arenât being pono that stops most people in their tracks. it just holds so much meaning and I really canât explain it better.

Third Generation Theory
What did Rose do to Pink Diamond that made Jasper hurt so much?
It couldnât be that she just kept her bubbled someplace, or else Jasperâs reaction probably wouldnât be so emotional. If she shattered her, Jasper would probably just say so. Whatever it is, itâs not something Jasper is comfortable talking about, or knows how to talk about. Whatever it is, itâs not something Gems know how to deal with.
Which reminded me of something else that the Gems didnât know how to deal with, and couldnât quite put into words. Steven.
Both Amethyst and Pearl were very emotional towards Greg and Steven for what they âdidâ to Rose. And both of them couldnât really name it or deal with it.
So my theory is: what if Rose Quartz is to PD what Steven is to Rose? Rose Quartz was created on Earth as the daughter of Pink Diamond and a Quartz, or maybe even a human. And in her very birth, she sparked the rebellion.
That would make PD Stevenâs grandmother, and Steven the third generation of the Pink Diamond lineage, hence the name of the theory.
They merged

WEâVE HIT TERMINAL MEME
@caesarianconfection
Iâve said âI hate thisâ so many times on this website, and never actually meant it, because âI hate thisâ is just shorthand for âthis is an example of a meme given a twist I wasnât expecting with intent to surpriseâ. Which is, in of itself, a meme on this site. God damn it.
But this⌠This is something else.
The rapidity of a memeâs introduction to its zenith to its decline is so rapid that in ten years, youâll need a damn twenty-page manual to explain this. Itâll be as unfunny and hard to explain as jokes in Shakespeare plays, except even more inexplicable because fuck, at least Shakespeareâs jokes are usually about anal or fucking your mother, good wholesome sex jokes we can all get behind.
For the love of fuck, how do you explain loss.jpg? How do you explain gun?
âŚ.I THOUGHT THIS WAS A YMCA REFERENCE
it is a YMCA reference - thatâs one of the 6 memes being represented here
ok let me see if i can break this down easily. YMCA is the easiest place to start - the song itself has become a meme over time with people changing the lyrics to reference other pop cultural events. so YMCA is meme one (1)
this first lyric replacement (âtake the breadsticks and runâ) is a reference to the tumblr meme âstuffing breadsticks into my purseâ. i think everyone remembers that one so i wont bother to explain it. thatâs meme two (2)
âman door hand hook car doorâ is a meme of its own, a creepypasta from i dont remember when. it was a terrible stupid retelling of the generic âstuck in a car while hook handed man tries to kill usâ story so the stupid title caught on for memorability. that in and of itself is meme three (3)
âgunâ is⌠yeah i dont know how to explain gun. long story short you add gun to the end of a phrase instead of what you expect the last word to be. its shock funny. its everywhere but its popular to add to âman door hand hook car doorâ for.. some reason? gun is meme four (4)
and the thing is, this four meme combo is something thats gone around before. meme combos are, itself, a meme. which means taking this meme combo and mixing in another meme actually becomes meme five (5)
which leaves us at loss.jpg. loss.jpg was a terrible bad comic supposed to be about some tragic event, but it was presented so poorly literally no one takes it seriously, and for some reason recreating the four-panel setup has become popular. so thats meme six (6)
(but i need to add that this is the greatest version of loss.jpg i think iâve ever seen. the initial âyoung manâ lines up with the guy bursting through the door, and the shock meme âgunâ matches the shock scene of the woman in the hospital and idk if OP even thought about that but it makes this just so much better)
I wasnât going to reblog this, but @pagesofkennaâs comprehensive meme-by-meme annotation is a thing of beauty and should be shared.
average tumblr post contains one meme, this post, which contains six, is an outlier and should not be counted
Can we please stop making scary shark movies? Sharks are pure sweet babies that donât deserve this slander. They just have bad eyesight. Donât be mean to them.
