Oh boy. Where do I begin?
I've had a whole modern Star Wars au in my head for about a year and a half now, starting when my sister and I were just bouncing "what ifs" off each other (shout out to her, she's an amazing fanfic brainstorming buddy). Aaaand then my ADHD brain decided it was the perfect new hyperfixation and I've been going through periods of hyperfixation and inspiration ever since. π
Technically, the Obitine au is only part of the modern au, being the first of the main three fics. I plan on writing one for each of the "Jinn-Kenobi-Skywalker-Tano" kids, if all works out, and then from there I'll add in additional fics and oneshots and everything as I want to (there will be a lot with the clones, who in this modern au are a giant MaΕri-American family who are close friends with the Jinn-Kenobi-Skywalker-Tanos). As far as the lore for this gigantic au goes, I think Rumor Has It is probably set the earliest, as it details Obi-Wan and Satine's high school years which happened back before a lot of the other main cast arrived in Sable Point.
Now that the origins of this au out of the way, I'll move onto actual story details.
Obi-Wan (or Ben, as he's known in this au) is originally from Scotland, but was adopted by Qui-Gon as a tween, the two having met while Qui was working overseas (still trying to decide exactly what he was doing over there) and formed a father-son like bond. After the adoption, Obi-Wan moved to the U.S. with Qui-Gon, and they settled in Sable Point, WA, where Qui-Gon now works as a ranger in the Olympic national forest and Obi-Wan attends school. Qui is simultaneously one of the most chill and most unhinged people out there, gets counted among the town's "weirdos," and is on the crunchier side of things. He delights in quietly meddling. Obi-Wan, on the other hand, prefers to stick to his own business but somehow keeps getting dragged into stuff. His own fault really, considering the company he keeps, but then again, what is he to do when one of the main instigators is his dad and the other one is his chaotic school friend who won't leave him alone? Said friend is, of course Quinlan Vos. It especially annoys Obi-Wan when Quinlan visits him at work in the school library, as Quinlan always disturbs its patrons simply by being Quinlanβ’οΈ.
Besides school and work and putting up with shenanigans (just wait until Anakin and Ahsoka join the family, Obi-Wan), he enjoys playing checkers, reading a mix of classics and nonfiction, organizing things around the house, going down research rabbit holes, and thinking of the perfect future snarky comebacks. He likes hanging out at the newly opened local joint, Dex's Diner, too, having struck up a friendship with the owner, Dex, despite the good ten years difference in their age.
The Jinn-Kenobi's home life is relatively quiet with just the two of them, though there is frequeny either classical, Celtic folk, or classic rock from Qui-Gon's youth playing, accompanying the two through their daily tasks. They're not much for TV, usually spending evenings at home reading, playing board or card games, or drinking tea and discussing the day. When they do watch TV, it's mostly older movies or shows. Lord of the Rings is an exception. Books, of course, are all over the house. You cannot convince me that these two would not be book nerds if they lived in our world. They don't currently have any pets, though Qui-Gon occasionally fosters. The one vehicle they have is pretty beat up, Qui-Gon being a firm believer in using everything until it absolutely cannot be used or repaired anymore, so Obi-Wan usually just rides his bike most places. It's more reliable than Qui-Gon trying to coax the old car into working properly.
Satine's family is British-American, old money, and very much high-class socialites. They've lived several places, mostly England, New York, and Seattle, but after business went bad and scandal followed in it's wake the family decided to take a step back from the public eye and live somewhere more secluded for the time being. Great in theory, perhaps, but in reality? The upper class in Sable Point is very small, with really only one particularly wealthy neighborhood, and many of the services they were accustomed to aren't available. The fancy private schools, for example, hence why both Satine and Bo-Katan are now attending public school. Satine is trying her best to fit in, but finding it a little difficult despite her best efforts, but Bo-Katan is thriving... and actively getting more rebellious by the day. It does not help that the girls' parents are rather distant, except perhaps for their mother trying to mold them into the roles she deems best fit for their futures. In that respect, Satine understands Bo's rebellion, but she can't bring herself to follow it. It's always been the understanding, that she would someday take over for her father and lead the family, lead their businesses, and even lead their circles, or at least something along those lines, even if it's far from what Satine wishes to do.
Unsurprisingly given their circumstances, the Kryze house is quieter even than the Jinn-Kenobi's, and not in a comfortable way. Their parents are gone most of the day almost every day, the girls either let themselves in and out for school or are let in by the family's housekeeper, and family time is... well... severly lacking. They do have a brother, but he is away in Europe and they never see him. The house is large and beautiful, sure, but it's not a home. It's too empty for that, filled with silence and emotional distance and underlying, mostly unspoken tensions (when Bo's involved it's a different story).
Satine, like Obi-Wan, is quite fond of literature, Shakespeare's plays being among her favorites. Her favorite genre is undoubtedly the classics, but she does branch out and read others as well from time to time. She is also an avid journaler, language learner, and tea drinker. She enjoys old musicals and sneaks in the occasional rom-com/"chick flick" when nobody's home. World events tend to greatly concern her, even at fourteen, and the seeds are already being planted for her later diplomatic, peace-seeking, pacifist-leaning political and ideological views. She's more stoic and shy than her sister is, and definitely more quiet, but she does have an underlying steel. She holds to her principals firmly and has a sharp wit that hates to back down once it's awakened. Which... makes things rather interesting at school, especially once she meets Obi-Wan, who also seems to enjoy a good battle of the wits, unfortunately for their teachers' sanity.
