Not a new trend, a reality #videomarketing
This morning my father sent to the Family Whatsapp chat the video below.
And he told my mum...“Sunsi, please buy apples in the market, we’ll cook these apple roses this weekend”.
When your father uses social media platforms and shares the same - or almost the same- content you do, it’s when you realise that the latest trends are not just cool things used by millennials, but a reality. I´m confident to say that video marketing is here to stay for a long time.
We’ve all realised that Facebook´s video content has increased notoriously in the last year. Between April 2015 and November 2015, the amount of average daily video views on Facebook doubled from 4 billion video views per day to 8 billion. Smartphones are playing an important role. As shown in the graphic below, In 2015, 44% of video plays were done through a mobile device, a 74% increase VLY, +844% since 2012. As a result, video ad impressions on desktop drop from 62% to 50% in Q4 2015, according to Ooyala´s study.
But what kind of content are users looking for online? According to Reelseo - a really cool video marketing magazine I recently discovered - the below sites are the most-watched video publishers last month. 4 out of 10 are food related- this makes me realise that my father is way more “in” than I thought ;)
Tasty (BuzzFeed) (2.2B Views)
The LAD Bible (1.2B Views)
Vlechten Met Daan (1.1B Views)
UNILAD (1B Views)
Tastemade (925M Views)
Now This News (826M Views)
Tip Hero (519M Views)
News EBC (484M Views)
Tastemade Brasil (462M Views)
Brightside (449M Views)
Looking at the publishers above you realise they are pure video content creators. But how are top brands using video?
Firstly, I would like to differentiate between ads and video content marketing. Emirates is a really good example of a top brand using video. Last year, the airline launched a really cool campaign called #BeThere where they picked a few employees - a pilot, some cabin crew, a member in the reservation department and an IT project manager - to help customers discover the world. Great campaign that transmits the company’s values and gives travel content to them (check out my favourite character, Ashley).
Parallel to this campaign, they launched Jennifer Aniston’s add.
As you can see, they are both different campaigns with different objectives - and budgets. Both transmit the ideals and values of its brand. Looking at this, you may think video marketing is just for top brands with huge budgets, but it’s not. If you are a small business, you can also do video marketing. How?
Production costs have decreased significantly in the recent years. Apps like Vine, Spark Camera, Instagram and many others allow any small business to generate video content with a limited budget.
5 Tips while creating video content:
Keep it simple - just 1 message at a time!
Keep it short - less than 1 minute!
Horizontal - TV and computer screens are still horizontal. If the content is purely for mobile, then consider vertical - Snapchat is definitely changing the trend!
Avoid too many filters/emoticons
Measure all campaigns - if you aren’t getting attraction, or the message is not getting to your customer, you may consider new ways of connecting with them. Don´t waste time and money :)
Finally some images from Gary Vaynerchuck´s site, that explain the stage of each video platform and its usage LOL
