Heated Rivalry, Shane Hollander/Ilya Rozanov, winnerâs room au
For most games, Shane has a system. He takes his forfeits frequently enough, but not so often that anybody thinks about it. No captains, no rookies. Somber players who take the tradition seriously, donât make a fuss; full lips, ideally, and enough experience to give a decent blow job. He always showers first and wears his walk-in suit. He tries to remember to offer a pillow because the tile is unforgiving on knees. Thanks, he says, at the end, when theyâre both fully dressed again. Manners are still important. He likes to imagine that players whisper, Hollander, heâs not bad, he follows the rules, acts like a professional.
But when itâs Boston, everybody knows that Hollander always picks Rozanov. And Rozanov always picks Hollander.

Another month, another batch of stories worth feasting on. This collection has a little bit of everything (cliff, alphas, and apocalypses, oh my).
Pencil in the Rest by lynadyndyn (shane x ilya, 87K, a/b/o)
Shane had absolutely no idea how to describe what Rozanov smelled like when the wind changed. Other than the cigarette, he couldn't begin to break it down into individual notes, but it was familiar in the way things were in dreams. The details of the scent mattered much less to him than his response to it: Shane felt sucker-punched, his knees going a little shaky, his mouth filling with saliva, his hands sweating. He froze in place, helplessly, as he watched Rozanov take a cautious sniff of the air before slowly turning his head to meet Shane's eyes.
....
He remembered the hours and hours of Rozanov's game tape he had watched on the family computer in the downstairs den - had he known? Had some part of him known? His biology had been betraying him for years; this shouldn't have surprised him, but the disappointment coated his throat. Shane had really been looking forward to playing against this guy. Just one more thing that got snarled up in his designation that should have just been about hockey.
Omegaverse stories were one of those things that I put in a box labeled Not For Me and never thought about again. Until this story came along and opened my eyes. No, thatâs not strong enough. Set my brain on fire? The omega element adds a fascinating (and enfuriating!) gender commentary, but it also dials up the forbidden longing of it all. There's A+ yearning, excellent world building filled with clever details, an ending that feels earned and satisfying without being easy, and it's sexy as hell. Even if this isn't your usual thing, please give it a try.
Your famous golden touch by anonymous (shane x ilya, 30k)
âWell, Rozanov canât afford the rehab he needs to get back to the league,â Shane said. âSo Iâll pay for it.â ...
As Shane spoke, Ilya largely kept his eyes on the money manager. Heâd never gotten to watch someone realize Shane was insane before.
Although, having given it more thought, it wasnât insane to Ilya. If Hollander had been taken out of the game heâd feel the same way. There had been times, over the years â when he was on a five game road trip against mediocre teams with lackluster crowds â where what drove him to put on a show was the knowledge that Shane had put on a show the night before. It was obviously the same for Shane. Ilya was surprised no hockey nerd had ever tracked how their successes clustered, how Shane having a big game was so often immediately followed by Ilya having a big game and vice versa. If Ilya had lost that, heâd have lost a lot of the magic of hockey. He understood how Shane felt, but he was the only person on earth who could.
Every time this anon (of the perfect for now series) posts something I know it will be my new favorite thing. So, here it is, my new favorite story. This week anyway. Ilya gets gravely injured and has to claw his way back into the NHL. Shane wants to help the only way he can: by becoming his sugar daddy. This author has such a magical way of capturing the mess between these two without losing sight of how much they fundamentally like each other.
Dawn in the Altered World by idiopathicsmile (shane x ilya, 52k)
That afternoon, Ilya and the others tie on their skates and cautiously take to the ice. Ilya divides them in two (half are âBoston,â half are âRaidersâ), they designate goals with mounds of snow, and then they are playing something close to actual hockey. It feels like freedom. It feels almost like before. Everyone is horribly rusty, but by the end, they are grinning like theyâve won the Cup again. Like fish who have been returned to water.
Ilya skates to the edge of the pond. The surface is uneven, imperfect, and yet still somehow it is the best ice he has ever played on. When he looks up, one of the old farmers is watching him.
âGood game,â says the farmer. âReally goddamn good game.â
Ilya nods.
âYou know who you looked like, out there?â the farmer continues.
âIlya Rozanov?â Ilya guesses.
A Station 11 AU. You could read and enjoy it without having read the book, but then you'd be missing out. (Is there fanfic for station 11? There must be.) The world ends but hockey doesnât. I really enjoyed this tale of two damaged people literally and figuratively finding their way back to each other from the wilderness.
a pox on all your houses by apocryphal (19k, shane x. Ilya)
"When is that from?" Ilya demands, the moment Svetlana answers her phone. "Is that from today?"
"Obviously the test is from today," Svetlana snaps. "The chlamydia is from six weeks ago when you couldn't shut the fuck up for five minutes during my movie, and I had to pause it and wear you out like some kind of fucking puppy with the zoomies."
"Well, you picked a terrible movie," Ilya reasons.
"I picked up chlamydia, you asshole."
Just the most adorable story about STDs that you can possibly imagine. Charming from beginning to end.
future tense by @radialarch (2k, shane x ilya)
No one would have called it incriminating. The Metros captain, having a wild night out with the boys. The hockeysphere had mostly reacted with amusement. So Hollzy does know how to have fun. But Ilya looked at the stranger's fingertips pressed to the small of Shane's back and thought: this man is going to fuck him. There was no mistaking the intent. Ilya knew it with the certainty of someone who had been fucking Shane Hollander for ten years.
The thing was: it had been Shane who'd said, "You can."
A tasty little slice of jealousy digging into some of the uncertainties of the Ottawa plan.
the intricate brocade of this happiness by waxing__crescent/@always-waxing-crescent (10k, shane x ilya)
Yuna must know how it feels from the other side as well; to be a son leaving a home. The distance hurts from any direction.Â
Ilya thinks about his parents, how he used to sleep in their bedroom. Maybe, what she doesnât want to realize is that the reverse isn't a relief either. It feels worse to stay. Thereâs no way out unscathed.
âSometimes,â Ilya says, âit still feel like all I am is my motherâs son.â
He shouldnât be saying it. She couldnât possibly understand what he means: Ilya hasnât told anyone about any of it, any of his life, like the pain wonât leak out if no one knows the details.
A beautiful and clear eyed examination of the boys' first Christmas together, planting the seeds of Ilya's mental health struggles in Ottawa. I particularly enjoyed Ilya trying to negotiate his relationship with Yuna while grappling with his own family history.
lotophage by @citrusses (9k, shane x ilya)
"That's Ilya Rozanov," Yuna supplies, when the camera zooms in on one of the players. He looks unremarkable to Shane, the way all of the helmeted players in identical gear flying across the rink do. Another faceless white uniform on white ice. "He plays the same position as you."
âForward," Shane says cautiously, trying not to phrase it like a question.
"Center," his mom corrects gently. She's so gentle with him, no matter how many mistakes he makes. It's the curdling sort of gentle that makes Shane want to rip off his own skin, and all he can do is endure it. He has no right to insist on not being treated gently. This woman is his mother, even though Shane, as he is now, is not really her son
Shane loses his memory after a bad hit, and from the outside looking in, it doesnât look like a life he wants back. Ilya flits around the edges of the story, heartbroken twice over, although it's actually Yuna's pain that I found the most poignant. Citrusses does a beautiful job of capturing a Shane that isnât our Shane but still feels like a version of him.
they always placed you for the leaving type by epigraphs (10k, shane x ilya)
When the English gets too hard, when he crosses the threshold to utter exasperation, Ilya puts his tongue to an entirely different use. He leans over and hooks a finger under Svetlanaâs jaw, tugging her close. Their mouths meet, a crash of lips and teeth and tongue, both of them high on the endorphins fizzing in between their bodies as they fuse themselves together.Â
A delicate look at Ilya and the English language through the years.
a body in your passenger seat by brawlite (5k, scott x ilya)
You want me to leave ugly car? I leave ugly car. Butââ Rozanov trails off, looking at Scott like he's studying him before raising his eyebrows and tilting his head just so, like Scottâs supposed to follow his invisible, and probably insane, train of thought.Â
âBut fucking what?â Scott asks.Â
Rozanov hums. He smirks, lips quirking up in a way that makes Scott kind of want to punch him. He wishes they were still on the ice, just so he could. Free reign.Â
âI donât think you want,â Ilya says, smug.Â
I have such a soft spot for well written stories with Hunter and Rozanov and I particularly enjoyed this prickly pwp. Kip and Shane don't make an appearance but they haunt the narrative anyway.
Your Dog by medric/@bluegrasshole (9k, Cliff-centric)
Where did Rozy learn to do all that, anyway? If he was anything like Cliff in high school, and he probably had to be given how fucking talented he was to go first overall for an Original Six team, then it was all hockey all the time, with barely any free moments for socializing or fucking. Not to say that Cliff was a virgin or anything when he got to Boston, God no. He was a big hockey-playing fish in a small Canadian pond and hasnât had his nose broken yet, so like, definitely in high demand by the local hotties. But Rozy knows so much about this stuff â women and how to dress for them and what to say to them. And they just love him, everywhere he goes. Cliff too loves him but for different reasons, probably.
Cliff plays a supporting role in so many stories, but this is the first one I've seen that really fleshes him out into a complete person. I enjoyed seeing Rozanov through his eyes: charismatic, a little bit impossible, little bit unknowable.

I just read your winnerâs room story and it opened my eyes! Any recommendations for other Hollanov winnerâs room stories? Plans to write more?
I opened my own eyes, honestly, so I'm just now catching up. I started reading through the A03 tag last week but sometimes when I overdose on fanfic, I convince myself that there's nothing left to say, so I decided to get my words down first.
No immediate plans to write more, but never say never. I spent an inordinate amount of time contemplating the contracts they would have signed, and none of those details made it in, so maybe there will be a sexy legal sequel (kidding. mostly).
In terms of recs, so far I've read and enjoyed Star Pupil by chaentics/@rozzed (Luca/Shane, Luca/Ilya; makes your stomach hurt in a delicious way) and Echoes by @jtimu (AU divergence where they never hook up, but they end up in the room together anyway. Gorgeous and sexy).
But there should be more! C'mon people. Shane has to have sex with men. For hockey. There's a lot to chew on!
18. If you wrote a sequel to [insert fic], what would it involve?
Pretty sure you were supposed to specify sweet anon, but what the hell, I'll guess you're asking about no smoke without you, since that's the one that seems like the most obvious request (or maybe you've dug really deep into my ao3 history and you're asking about Gilmore Girls; I don't know your life).
Honestly, I like a somewhat hopeful open ending, so I probably wouldn't write a sequel. I've flirted with the idea of an Ilya-accompaniment, but I'm a little nervous to know what's going on in that boy's brain. Nothing good, I suspect. TLG-style lows without most of the highs.
49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if youâre up for it!
I have 12,000 words written on that last year in Boston and Ilya grappling with a new identity, but it's missing a cohesive theme and a narrative drive. Plus, I keep reading stories I love that already capture that era perfectly, so it may get relegated to the fanfic graveyard while I let this grimy winner's room concept take over my brain. Boston-year excerpt below.
(unrelated question: how do you write a winner's room trope with minimal sex? Asking for a friend).
âWhat if they are not interested?â he asks. Itâs the first time heâs allowed himself to voice this thought. He doesnât like to spot flaws in their plan; better to have faith or at the very least, show faith.Â
âOf course theyâre interested. You would be the best thing to happen to Ottawa sports in â you would be the best thing that ever happened to Ottawa.âÂ
âNot every team likes my reputation. Just, if they did say no, what would you do? Would you play for one of the New York teams? Would I go to Toronto?â
Shane frowns at him. âI donât â I think New Yorkâs cap â look, thereâs no way Ottawa will say no.Â
"This is going to work. Itâs a good plan,â he says.Â
Shane's face is fixed with his trademark look of blunt-edged determination, the same one that carried his team to two Stanley Cups. Somebody else might find it overwhelming to be the subject of all that focus, but Ilya is used to absorbing the expectations of others.Â
Shaneâs arms tighten around Ilyaâs waist. âAnd neither one of us are going to fucking Toronto.â Â
âOne year,â echoes Ilya. One year. Heâs lived through a lot of bad years. He was twelve once, and after that he was thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen.Â
For one more year, he will be Bostonâs Ilya Rozanov. He was his motherâs first and ever since then heâs been selling himself to the highest bidder.Â
Ungrateful boy, loyal to nothing, his father always said, and maybe it was true, because next year he will belong to somebody else again. But he never knew until now how sweet it could taste to give himself away for nothing at all.
man sometimes friendship really is just "I saw this and knew it would give you psychic damage. please respond with agony" and then they do. and it's great

for the fic writers asks: 12, 16, and 48 (with recs please!)
12. Are there any tropes you used to dislike but have grown on you?Â
I was skeptical about the whole omegaverse concept, but pencil in the rest by lynadyndyn made me feel completely feral and now I'm rethinking that. I was also side-eyeing the winnersâ room conceit until I thought about it through the lens of Ilya trying to sleep with Shane before another player could beat him to it. Loss of autonomy and sex mixed with uncertainty, all of my favorite flavors. Itâs good maybe, to practice, he might have told Shane back in those showers. Now Iâm working through the A03 tag and hoping somebody else has already written this so I donât have to.Â
This isnât really the question, but my favorite trope is that old classic, forced bed sharing. Somehow I canât think of a single Heated Rivalry story that takes advantage of this one. Can that be right? Maybe itâs too hard to imagine those two not just leaping into bed.Â
Basically, give me any trope where both parties are fooling themselves and mutually pining and Iâm yours.Â
16. Whatâs an AU you would love to read (or have read and loved)?
Iâm a broken record on this. Iâm still waiting for a Heated Rivalry Pride and prejudice AU! As for recs, I put together a whole post of wonderful AUs for all tastes.Â
I also just read Untouchable Face if youâre looking for some delightful escapism. Rozanov is Rozanov; Shane is a professional swimmer who wasn't quite good enough. There's also an in-progress Station 11 AU lurking out there somewhere I've been waiting to read once it's complete.
48. Whatâs the last fic you read? Do you recommend it?
Iâm not going to call out something I donât recommend, but I recently read runninâ til we outta time by walkingthroughwindows (unbelievable rose voice; the dance club scene is somehow better than canon), youâre the new god that weâre worshipping by geniflux (messy shane self hatred, yes please), how bad do you really want it, how hard will it make you cry by sundancekid (full of delicious details), and winning streak by @citrusses (Shane voice of all time; Ilya pounding on his door is iconic to me) and recommend all of them.

49. What are you currently working on? Share a few lines if youâre up for it!
50. Answer any question of your choice, or talk about anything you want to talk about!
Why are hockey players such golf fans? Seriously WHY GOLF? You stand in the sun for hours and shoot balls in grass. Why not football or tennis or idk basketball
đ Status symbol, maybe?? I truly don't know. I don't truly get it either
So regrettably I think pedantically know the answer to this one: I assume pro athletes (not even just hockey players but like all of them) golf in the off-season because itâs the sport that has the lowest possible chance of injury. Canât be out here playing pick-up basketball and risking an MCL tear.
Thereâs also the part thatâs very funny that I have observed from my dad playing golf where it is absolutely just an excuse for straight men to get together and gossip with that gossip being periodically broken up with a socially-acceptable act of briefly Doing a Sport.
But most importantly itâs very, very funny that everyone agrees itâs biblically accurate that Shane Hollander plays golf but no one wants to talk or think about it because golf sucks.
No, okay, wait -- great news, I think we can get Shane out of this. The other guys are like, "C'mon, golf is like the only sports-related activity we can do in the off-season and not accidentally get injured." And Shane is like, "You know, that's not really true. It's actually super-common for pro golfers to get rotator cuff injuries." Because Shane cannot imagine playing golf at anything less than the intensity of Tiger Woods.

listening to fleetwood mac is like. i donât know this song but letâs give it a shot. oh wait i do know this song. iâve heard it a million times and always liked it, i just didnât know the name. on some level i kind of assumed that song was just an ambient part of the world the way the sound of the wind or birdsong in the trees was but apparently itâs by fleetwood mac. neat.
