HYST note: I both adore and feel annoyed at this panel every time I come across it. Let me explain!

Wonder Woman’s message in this panel is spot on and it hits home in a particularly personal way. I’ve had more than one relationship end because my ex-boo felt I was too opinionated or too ambitious. No regrets on my end because, real talk, why would I want to be with someone whose masculinity is threatened by my accomplishments?

However, as much as I *love* Diana’s reason for refusing Steve, it does come out of nowhere in the context of the story. Cultural expectations back then (and even now, ick) advocate that women dumb themselves down for men, but Steve’s actions on their own *never* imply that that’s what he wants. In this issue and in the ones that came before it, Steve never once mentions that he wants Wonder Woman to be weaker or lesser than who she is. The dude ADORES her! He can be dismissive of Diana Prince because he’s like “lol this is too dangerous for you bc you’re a woman!” - that’s sexist and annoying. But when Wonder Woman shows that she’s clearly better than him, he’s totally game - that’s incredibly progressive, even for today!

Over the course of the series, Wonder Woman is going to reject Steve’s proposals over and over again, and Steve’s not going to change how much he loves her. I find that sweet and endearing because they’re both forthright with their feelings and they still want to be together.
