the difference to me, by the way, when it comes to sidney crosby’s acts of goodness and kindness versus nico hischier’s, is that i believe sid is aware that he is choosing to do good or kind things because deep in the recesses of his mind exists an abacus on which he is tallying the worth of his soul and he is always fighting in the spiritual trenches to keep that thing in the green. there’s a sort of self-awareness to sid’s kindness and generosity, like a gently smug kind of layer deep down underneath it where he knows he’s just bought himself one more opportunity to grab an opposing player by the knees and spin-launch them into the boards like mario does to bowser. every time he screeches at someone on the ice with a cracking voice that they’re being a pussy or steamrolls into an early-twenties player for no reason but the crime of being gen z he knows he has to go out into the world and perform a miracle. this has nothing to do with his public perception btw he does not care what the world thinks of him. it’s all for his private and meticulously kept internal abacus.
nico, however, does good and is kind because the concept of behaving another way does not seem to ever register in his mind. he is being the best nico he can be. he believes everyone around him, even jack hughes, is both trying their best and also proud of everything they try. even jack hughes! if nico wasn’t a hockey player his chosen career would be like a guy who listens to 911 calls and dispatches himself to them. he’d be a guy who holds the nose of the plane steady during turbulence. he’d be a professional guy who squeezes your hand once and tells you how brave you’re being at the dentists or the doctors. and he’d mean it. he does think you’re being brave. he thinks everyone is being brave. even jack hughes

NHL, NHLPA donate more than $4 million to program, which features healthcare benefits for former players, families
“The way it’s set up now, if you’ve played one shift in the NHL you will get a family doctor. If you played one shift in the NHL you get a mental health wellness professional for you, your wife and your kids,” Healy said. As impressive as that may be, it runs far deeper than that. For those who played 400 games, they’ll receive dental and prescription eyewear coverage too. And for former players who haven’t reached that threshold and can’t afford the healthcare that they need, the League and NHLPA have established a slush fund for those, as Healy puts it, “in financial distress or find themselves in catastrophic situations.”

Matvei Michkov genuinely so important to me. Hey kid, I'm sorry the dump-and-chase system drives you nuts, and Tocchet likes it just as much as Tortorella did. I'm sorry your creativity and joy for the sport were being stifled in your first and sophomore seasons. But it's okay. It's okay because Trevor Zegras started playing with you, and he loves hockey the way you do, and he can teach you what it means to work within this system while still keeping your love for hockey. It's okay because Denver Barkey was called up, and he's literally everything anyone could ask for in a teammate. He’s so excited to be a hockey player that it reminds you this is all you've ever wanted. They can read you, they trust you, and the team does too, now . You start to really understand what everyone keeps saying about Philadelphia. This city will love you, and so will your team. And you will love hockey again, I promise.
here's to 28 years of women's hockey at the olympics
Hi, it’s me again! Transcriping and translating some swedish hockey boys
reporter: What are you wearing?
Erik Karlsson: I don’t know but uh, I can take them off if you want and then we can talk.
r: *laughs* You look smart in glasses!
EK: Yeah I know! I do have- I do have eye problems so they’re real glasses. *clears throat*
r: Is that why you’re not scoring any goals?
EK: Yeah that has to be it, because I can’t see shit out there right now.
Just in case it doesn’t come across to any non-swedish speakers, the tone in this entire video is very friendly and joking!

there’s a kinda cheesy article that mentions how when geno first landed at the pittsburgh international airport, he took off his earphones and everything around him just sounded like tv static. and i am SO stuck on the idea of sidgeno sharing earphones during rookie years
anyway this is a commission, i am like happy, you know?

can i say something
many people give the nfl a lot of shit for the injury and concussion rates but like. the nhl has a very comparable rate of injury and concussion and doesn’t acknowledge it + has a much worse culture around it. the nfl is by no means perfect but they are working to improve the gear to help players (see the guardian helmets for example, as well as helmet designs per position) meanwhile the nhl doesn’t seem to give a fuck about it’s players’ safety at all as we’ve seen time and again.
now think very carefully about why the nfl may be viewed as the more violent and injurious sport..
they are trying to cancel hank green for saying what ALL hockey fans have been thinking

One thing I do want to stress with the WPBL is there is going to be some aspects that seem unpolished or rough compared to other recent women league start ups, or even compared to early days nwsl / wnba. And that’s because there has been very very limited opportunities for women to pursue baseball on any level, and even less to play baseball with other women. The most traditionally organized women’s baseball that I know of exists in Japan with the Venus league, which is a large amateur baseball league that has tiers involving high school, university, and club teams (Japan also used to have a pro league that folded in the pandemic.) there are national team programs, but the women’s baseball World Cup only started as recently as 2002 and has not been held 9 times. Most of the women’s playing experience comes with playing for indie ball and vasity teams or programs where they’d frequently be the only women (and many of them faced being pushed out / giving less opportunities + focus from coaches because of that) and their national team opportunities opportunities.
And while national team opportunities have improved in recent years, here is an excerpt on what it was like for former Team USA veteran player Malaika Underwood to train with the team (source)
“After the national team trials in June, Underwood invited teammates who also lived in the Southeast to spend weekends at her house in Jacksonville so that they could practice together. They also met up in Atlanta. All the training and travel happened on their own dimes. When they could, players sent videos of their pitches and swings to their coaches, who would try to make adjustments remotely.
“It’s all on us,” Underwood says. “In terms of time and personal investment, we’ve all given up a lot to be here. Guys make sacrifices to play baseball, too, but there’s just a much clearer path for them.”
Basically I say this because I know there’s a lot of people coming over from being recent wnba/pwhl/nwsl fans, and particularly if you watched the latter two leagues, understand that the WPBL is coming at it with significantly less infrastructure in place in America. There’s no ncaa programs, no high school programs, the only previously attempted league after the AAGPBL was the amateur league, North American Women's Baseball League, which existed for five years. The nwsl and PWHL all had several attempted leagues before if, several overseas leagues, college programs, and stronger national team programs that appeared in major tournaments like the Olympics they were building off of. I also don’t want to entirely compare to wnba, because I think the time period and how it came about puts it in a different cultural context, but even they had a few attempts at pro leagues and several decades of organized college play.
There is going to be growing pains with this and it’s an ambitious project, and it’s crucial to understand that context and how different the sport infrastructure is when supporting these athletes and respect for what they’re trying to build here
