Muelsyse is a really delightful character for a variety of reasons, but something that Muelsyse has also always been to me is dangerous.
Much of her characterization focuses on the solitude she feels, functionally the last of her species, and burdened with a world poisonous to her via originium- only the foundation of nearly all of Terra's technology. Her theme song is almost entirely focused on her loneliness, showing through her veneer of cuteness.
But how she's introduced is back in Mansfield Break, MB-1, where she calls Silence unprompted.
The thing that gets me is that at every point where she can provide information for the conversation, she avoids it until it seems to benefit her. For me, she came off as an espionage agent; dangerous and willing to turn on you on a dime as soon as it suits her.
Something particularly standout to me about this section is that she explicitly says "I pose no imminent threat to you~", which I feel only comes off as a threat; an implied "yet."
Here she states how she followed Mayer and Silence without being noticed at all, further unnerving Silence.
The way that Silence remains on edge for the entire duration of Muelsyse' presence was very striking to me, and tallied in my mind that she's someone you need to keep your guard up against.
In MB-2 she continues probing, and lies about not knowing what the Diabolic Crisis is.
By this point, and forever on, it was clear to me that Muelsyse was dangerous.
And that was before I knew that she was a shapeshifter capable of imitating anyone's physical characteristics. It comes as little surprise that she can infiltrate basically whatever she wants to with such powers, and would be a nightmare for any organization to deal with and keep secrets from.
For her to be actually removed from the field during Dorothy's Vision, it took Ho'olheyak, an extremely capable agent and caster that has a specialization on disabling enemy arts.
And now, the stuff that made me want to make this post, her recent actions in Unrealized Realities: a direct threat on people's lives! UR-4:
It could be a bluff for the sake of defending her objective, but even if that's the 100% case it shows that she knows how to be immensely frightening.
We also learn that her iconic hand gesture may an arts motion, maybe a means to maintain her water clones over long distances! Neat!
Amusingly, despite Ho'olheyak being introduced as a very capable and dangerous person who actively tries to kill others in the story, because she isn't trying to hide that aspect of herself left less of the same impression. Muelsyse' introduction in Mansfield Break was a subtle bit of storytelling but carried a lot of weight and I feel added an important and appreciable aspect to her character. She can be dangerous and duplicitous when she chooses to be, and her cuteness can be a mask for that as much as it is for her loneliness.
Mansfield Break may have been a little rough around the edges but is an event that I not only enjoyed on its own merits, but thought was instrumental for introducing an important character moving forward. Via her continued interaction with Silence going over the plan, it granted her teeth and helped cement her character in a way that I remember to this day.
