Iām pretty sure the Oleksiaks are like 99% of the reason Iām bi
i am not joking we need to force teach cooking in schools. like. it is an essential thing for survival. do you know how easy it is to make things if you know even the bare bones shit about how cooking works. we need to teach teenagers how far you can take an onion and some other veggies itāās sad that people grow up not knowing how to prepare literally anything. and iām not talking about oh this home ed class taught me how to make chicken nuggets at home iām talking about learning the balancing of sweetness and acidity and saltiness and bitterness and shit like that and techniques and oil temperatures and how meats cook. it needs to be taught because itās literally not even that difficult and it matters so much
i truly believe that knowing how to cook is a basic survival concept and the fact that so many people canāt even make simple dishes is depressing as hell this is the sorta thing that should be taught at a young age. being able to take the ingredients you have around your home and turn them into a meal is like, essential and will make life so much better. you donāt need to be a high end chef you just need to understand some things that can be easily taught⦠but then again maybe the education system is playing a roll against this and ultimately they want you to grow up to rely on mcdonalds for dinner. i donāt know. please learn how to cook for yourself if youāre able. iām not asking you to hunt for specific ingredients to make some expensive youtuberās ābestā recipe but if you know the basics of cooking you can do a lot with cheap canned ingredients. cooking can be affordable i promise you just need to learn how to make do with what you can get
Can anyone point me towards resources that teach those basics cus I would LOVE to teach my child this stuff but i dont know how to cook
not comprehensive but heres some:
internet shaquilleās basics but especially:
making rice
making scrambled eggs
making oatmeal
levels of cooking meat
using & storing vegetables with recipes in the description (this one has a bit of Sassiness directed at people who dont like vegetables but the content is solid)
food safety + a recipe to demonstrate
how to learn to cook (just a list of subtopics, no actual tips)
cooking techniques playlist
how to cut x
basics with babish s1 & 2, but particularly:
freezer meals,
weeknight meals,
kitchen tools (although the specific suggestions are pretty expensive even with the lower end scale items the basic categories are solid, and you can evaluate what items you will realistcially need - eg. if you dont need to read temp for steaks etc the temp reader will not be relevant) &
kitchen care (mid-high advanced home cooking)
basic knife skills
picking the right pan for each recipe
j. kenji lopez-altās tips and tricks playlist
egg recipes
a little more complicated, involved, and longer than any of the rest of these but good breakdown of flavor & how and why to use the basic seasoning/flavor profiles
and then recipe channels representing various cuisines:
j. kenji lopez-alt (various)
marionās kitchen (southeast & east asian, western/asian fusion)
maangchi (korean)
future neighbor (mostly korean)
the western supermarket playlist of chinese cooking demystified (more recipes available but these are accessible if you dont have āspecialtyā ingredients)
family recipes playlist by made with lau (chinese)
not another cooking show (various)
cooking with boris (bear with me here i know he does it exaggeratedly humorously but a lot of them are actually solid and beginner cook friendly. mostly slavic/russian)
you suck at cooking (also falls into the intentionally humorous category but most of the recipes are pretty solid anyway)
how to cook that (baking, also does debunking videos of viral cooking hacks - breaks down the reasons the hacks dont work, pretty important to understand those basics imo)
internet shaquille (various)
babish culinary universe (various)
i REFUSE to recommended joshua weissman because he is fucking insufferable but if you want you can try if you can deal with it, the techniques/recipes seem fine for the most part
again definitely not a comprehensive list but it touches on most of the basics
this.
Marcus Rashford may have missed a penalty, but thousands of children were fed during the pandemic because of him and I think thatās a far greater thing to be remembered for.

sometimes, you appear in my notes and i'm really happy to see you're still around ā„
Thank you sweet anon. Iām still here I promise, just not as much as I used to be <3Ā
Iām so fucking sick of the expectation that liberals much be 100% factually correct 100% of the time, but right wing idiots can believe that the coronavirus is a hoax and spread dangerous misinformation because they simply can.Ā
Recently I had a conversation with an American friend about college. He told me that he owes around 150k in student loans. Which baffled me greatly, because I am German and I studied in Germany.Ā
University is free here. You pay around 200 to 300 Euros a semester for general admission, which more often than not includes a semester ticket with which you can use public transportation for the entire semester as well.Ā
Books arenāt included, but you can generally buy them used from somebody else. In the three years I spent at college (2008-2011), I paid maybe 500 Euros in total for books.Ā
Rent and food are cheap, because when you are in your early twenties you think that a dingy room in a shared apartment and deep dish pizza are the height of luxury. In the months I really lived it up, I spent like maybe 1000 Euros a month (including going out, drinking cheap beer, etc.).Ā
So I had expenses of approximately 12600 Euros a year. Triple that, and I spent 37800 Euros in the three years it took for me to get my bachelorās degree. At least half of that I earned through crappy part-time jobs like waitressing or DJing or babysitting. My parents helped with the rest.Ā
So I got out of college with pretty much no debt at all. Just like everyone else I know here. Some people (because their parents couldnāt help out) applied for student loans, but in Germany you only have to pay them back partially.Ā
Now I wonder, of course. Is this the best kept secret ever? Why arenāt more American students coming to Europe to study? There are tons of international subjects that are taught entirely in English. It is apparently not that hard to get a student visa, if youāre from the US (according to my American friend who did his masterās degree here) and most perfectly of all: you get to dazzle with an international study experience on your resume. That didnāt leave you in crushing debt! What a wild concept this is!Ā
I think I might be able to explain some factors... though this isnāt a comprehensive answer by any means. Most high school guidance counselors do not promote non-US, non-UK schools. I wasnāt even introduced to ANY Canadian schools and some were closer to home than where I ended up going to undergrad.Ā
A lot of this is based around classism and a constructed notion ofĀ āgood schoolsā. Thereās an undercurrent that more money= better education. Also thereās a prevalent myth that the name of the school wonāt be recognized from a foreign university. For example, I had never heard of the Utrecht University, which is an excellent school. But the fear instilled in a lot of high school kids is that youād graduate with a degree from a school that nobody recognizes. Would an employer prefer a student from Ohio State University or a university that theyād never heard of?
So a lot of high schoolers internalize the ignorant myths that the generations before us have created. And they are told that in order to succeed and be hired you should go to these schools.Ā
Then thereās also the whole make profit off of college students thing... which is a whole other topic. In general though, students rely heavily on guidance counselors because looking into colleges is such a daunting task and a lot of these guidance counselors donāt look into other countries.Ā
For anyone planning any type of school/community/club/activist event, or for any teachers/professors planning important in-class activities, here is the schedule of Jewish holidays this fall (2017):
Rosh Hashanah: Ā Evening of Wed 9/20, days of Thurs 9/21 and Fri 9/22
Yom Kippur: Ā Evening of Fri 9/29 and day of Sat 9/30
Most Jews wonāt be able to attend events or classes on those holidays. Ā Theyāre the most important days of our year. Ā Please avoid scheduling important events or activities on them, just as it would be inappropriate to schedule important events or class activities on Christmas.
Please reblog, even if youāre not Jewish yourself! Ā Thank you <3Ā
2018ās schedule is:
Rosh Hashanah: evening of 9/9, days of 9/10 and 9/11
Yom Kippur: evening of 9/18, day of 9/19
I would suggest that avoiding the evening of the 19th would be prudent, as well. Yom Kippur is a very intense experience, and weāll be recovering from a 25-hour fast. Just wait til the 20th.
WHAT A SHITTY CAPTAIN

š for Tito/Barzy!
The nights after parties always seem to carry late into the morning. Mat would never admit it, but sometimes he wonders what it would be like if heād gone the college route instead. Thatās sometimes how he and Tito end up going to parties at NYU, a friend of a friend goes there, and itās discreet enough. They never stay the whole time, get buzzed just enough to forget that their hockey players for a moment, but around 1:30, they decide to head out, Tito a little more sensible than Mat. They never go straight home though, they usually stop at McDonaldās or sometimes, if theyāve sobered up, drive to an empty parking lot and just look up at the New York skyline. Sometimes theyāll sit in silence, sometimes theyāll make out, and sometimes theyāll just talk about everything and nothing until the sun comes up.Ā
Thanks so much!!!Ā
Why Did They Come?
TOO FUCKINā phenomenal to NOT reblog!!!!
Omg weāre staying at a hotel where furries are at. And my mom called them cute. Hahahaha
Happy Passover to all my Jewish followers and mutuals!
mcu meme Ā - 4/10 scenes.
Itās the unspoken truth of humanity that you crave subjugation.
I see this scene reblogged a lot off the one Hiddleston blog I follow, but it almost always ends with Lokiās āThere are no men like meā line, which is completely missing the fucking point of the scene. And I get that itās about the Hiddleslove, which is great, but itās completely missing the fucking point of the scene. And it is a very important point.
This is one of my favourite moments in the whole MCU because of its incredible power and strength. This is not Captain America with his super soldier serum juice standing up to a god. This isnāt even a young man who might think heās somehow got a chance against the prick with the horns. This is an old, old man who knows, who knows, that heās probably going to die because of what heās doing, but he is not going to kneel to another man like Hitler.
Maybe he did, seventy years ago. Maybe thatās why he would rather die now than remain on his knees. Maybe he *didnāt*. Maybe he fought against his own countrymen, because he wouldnāt kneel to a man like this. Maybe heās always been one to stand up. Maybe he lost everything once because of it. Everything except his integrity, and maybe heās ready to die instead of risking losing that now, at the end of his life. Maybe his integrity cost him so fucking much seventy years ago that he hopes heās going to die for it now because he almost wishes heād have died for it then, but if heās going to die for it, heās goddamn well going to die with it.
Maybe heās a Holocaust survivor. Maybe heās Jewish. Maybe heās gay. Maybe heās Romani. We donāt know.
We donāt know anything about this man, except heās the bravest goddamn person in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
And thatās why it bothers me every time I see this scene go by with his response cut from it. Because itās missing. the. point.

Iāve been seeing a lot of anti-Nazi ones, which is great, but I felt like we needed one to show our support for the Jewish community. Ā
all you goyim I follow - I see you reblogging this and it warms me.
do not reblog this unless you mean it. I have dealt with so much anti-semitism in my life and the number of times I get it fromĀ āopen-minded liberalsā is disturbing. Remember this summer when the Dyke Marches banned people for having a rainbow flag with a Star of David on it? I was accused of playing myĀ āJew cardā too much when I tried to get my shitty goy roommate to stop making Auschwitz jokes.Ā
Being anti-nazi does not equal support for the Jewish community. Do not claim you support Jews just because you recognize that Nazis are terrible. Surprise, we actually have more to us than the Holocaust!
If you DO support the Jewish community, reblog the crap out of this so people can feel safe!
HAPPY HANUKKAH TO ALL WHO CELEBRETE IT! ššā”ļø
