Chance & Steve as Cousins would result in some of the funniest platonic and romantic pairing content known to man: a presentation
Daniel Harrington and his brother, Richard Harrington, were both born to a well-respected upper middle class family in Indiana. Being apart of the Silent Generation, their early life focused heavily on setting up for their futures. Daniel Harrington focused on starting his own business, while Richard started a law practice.
They both married immigrant women. Daniel married Serafina, a young Sicilian woman from Capri Leone. Richard married Mayumi, a young Filipino woman from Alaminos. Each family had one son, Steve and Chance respectively.
Steve and Chance grew up not necessarily close to one another. Their families weren't big on quality time with each other, especially not the brothers, never even so much as getting together for holidays.
Most of their time together was spent when Steve was younger, when Daniel would have to go on work trips and his son was too young to watch himself. Steve would visit Chance's house for a few days to a couple weeks at a time, when Chance was too young to talk. Some of their fondest memories as children is together, even if they fell off with age and with Daniel losing the need for childcare as Steve aged.
It isn't until the summer before Chance enters high school, with Steve already graduated, and decides to take on basketball as an extracurricular. He shows up randomly at Steve's door while his parents are away on a work trip begging to be coached by him because Jason was the new captain and totally intimidated him.
Steve wanted to shut the door in his face but eventually relented, albeit begrudgingly. They begin to develop almost a brotherly bond over the summer.
Steve comes to all the basketball practices and games when the season finally starts, and Jason starts off LOATHING him. First of all, Jason is filling his shoes as Captain of the team, and everyone makes sure to remind him constantly that he's performing in Steve's shadow both in terms of being Captain and also his status as one of the most popular kids in school. Second of all, Chance comes in already being coached by Steve on his technique, constantly bringing it up during practices. "Well, actually, Steve said this footing you're showing us can make it easy for the opponent to-" Jason's SICK OF IT. It's hard enough having Eddie Munson terrorizing him every second of every day, all while dating his ex girlfriend.
Steve knows Jason doesn't like him, and is an absolute menace about it. Anytime Jason looks at him during practices and games, Steve just gives him a shit-eating grin and a little finger-wiggle wave. It makes Jason see red.
Chance becomes one of Jason's closest friends despite this. They get along really well together, and hang out frequently. Chance struggled to make friends growing up, as a mixed-race kid in Midwest America. Finding community in the basketball team helped him gain a lot of confidence he didn't have before. Jason gives him a community he can depend on.
When Will, Jason's cousin, starts to take an interest in Chance, Jason JUMPS at the opportunity to wingman the fuck out of them. He clocks it before either of them can even say anything. He has never been more ready for something like this, and rallies the rest of the team behind him about it.
Meanwhile, When Jonathan, Jason's OTHER cousin, starts to take an interest in Steve fucking Harrington, Jason practically withers. The entire team gives him a hard time about it. "How is this any different, Jace?" "IF YOU EVEN HAVE TO ASK THEN YOU DON'T GET AN OPINION HERE, ANDY."
Insult to injury when Jane, Jason's OTHER OTHER cousin, starts dating Dustin Henderson, the boy who's basically the direct protégé of both Steve Harrington (who he loathes) and Eddie Munson (who he double loathes).
Even worse, Joyce, Jason's aunt, fucking LOVES all these guys like they're her own babies and will let them come over basically whenever they want. Jason will be just chilling with his cousins when all of the sudden, here comes their herd of Harrington dipshits swaggering in to crash the party. (Chance thinks its the funniest thing in the world when Jason immediately throws up his hands and starts pacing around the room about how he cant even get one single second of peace away from this family after a long day of being antagonized by the local metalhead).
