RIP Marjane Satrapi, author of the amazing graphic novels Persepolis about living during the fundamentalist revolution in Iran in the 70’s and 80’s. She also created the animated movie based on the graphic novels, which is where these gifs come from.

Reblogging in honor of Marjane Satrapi, one of THE great graphic novelists. Her comic Persepolis was a crucial text for shaping my belief that comics can deeply explore identity, culture, politics, and history.

If anyone would like to read a thorough take down of Sparta as a state not worth emulating, then ive got just the series of articles for you!
Reblogging because pissing on Sparta is one of my hobbies. And yes, totally check out the link above. Brett has a lot of great discussion and scholarship on why Sparta was proto-fascist garbage, and he presents it with both snark and accessibility.
Holy shit. That’s… that’s worse than I thought it would be. Yikes.
Reblogging because more people should read the ACOUP Sparta takedown and fewer people should get their concept of history from fucking 300.
No one should get their concept of history from 300, and I say that as someone who enjoyed 300. 300 is a comicbookification of a legend, and legends are already exaggerations.
A Great Divorce has also done an audio version of the ACOUP Spart takedown if audio is easier for you!
The tweets (Fuck Elon it's still tweeting) fail to notice that the fucking marble is what endures. Sparta may have had men, but it's Athens that still stands as the seat of power. So who won after the dust settled? Athens. Be so fucking for real.
guy who is fun-ruiningly pedantic about the differences between a labyrinth and a maze
in my defence, it IS actually a pretty fun difference
labyrinth: never give up! you can do it! just keep pushing!
maze: you are FUCKED. good luck navigating my tangled paths shithead.
it's me. I'm the girl who's incredibly pedantic about labyrinth vs maze. I've never felt so seen
Someone with more classics knowledge than me, please help me understand!
Is the way "labyrinth" is used accurate to its namesake? I keep thinking that, if there's literally only one path, why would Theseus need a ball of magic thread to help him find the way there/back, so either my knowledge is incorrect or this definition is fucked up. I think I remember that Daedalus designed the labyrinth in some special, extra tricky way, but even that doesn't make sense to me as something that would be a problem if there is literally only one path. Did the singular path break physics somehow?
By this definition the Labyrinth designed by Daedalus in Greek mythology is "actually" a maze, but tbqh the source of that weirdness is the fact that the way this post is worded (and the way most people talk when they bring up this fact) implicitly attributes a universal transhistorical quality to this distinction that it simply does not have.
In most languages the distinction between "labyrinth" and "maze" is so nonexistent that they don't even have separate words for them (e.g. in my native Spanish both words would be translated as "laberinto"), and historically speaking, the idea of a distinction between these two terms in English is EXTREMELY recent. For most of history the words "labyrinth" and "maze" in English have been treated as 100% interchangeable (and continue to be treated that way in most everyday contexts) because they're basically two words for the same thing, just with different etymological roots.
The idea that the words "maze" and "labyrinth" refer to different things and that the difference between them is that a labyrinth is unicursal while a maze is multicursal doesn't show up in any literature until the 1920's, and honestly it comes off more like an arbitrary prescriptivist assertion (rather than a descriptivist observation rooted in the way the words were actually being used by people).

In 2026, the chicest thing a gay actor can do is never explicitly come out as gay but also make it abundantly clear that he is. Coming out is too modern. Staying closeted is too old fashioned. But this method merges contemporary freedom with Old Hollywood glamour and allure, and it weeds out the dumbest people who truly don’t get it. I call it the Pascal Method.
Taylor Swift does this
no she doesn’t
You clearly don't go here or to queer history and signaling, or both, enough to have this conversation and I'm not going to explain it to you. You could have asked questions, you could have done even a modicum of research. You didn't and you made yourself look ignorant. Goodbye.

imagine if you will, a fairly dry survival crafting game in which you live in a bunker and must periodically venture out to scavenge food, set up turrets for attacking monsters, etc
now, your computer inside the bunker has a game-inside-a-game on it which is a charming farming sim of undeniably greater quality and scope than the survival game you're playing. therefore, the object of the game becomes to keep your bunker secure so you can play the farming game more.
now, once you achieve the highest rating in the farming game, a secret shop inside it unlocks, and one of the novelty items you can purchase is a game console, giving you access to games-inside-a-game-inside-a-game. most of the games for it are typical mobile shovelware, but one of them is a highly polished, extremely brutal precision platformer with amazing level design and production values exceeding that of the survival game and farming sim combined.
it is only at this point that the purpose of this entire contrivance becomes clear: to create the most deranged speedrun community the world has ever seen.
