Fei Fei | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
39th Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 朏朏 (Fěi Fěi) 🙀According to 《山海经·中山经》 "The Classic of the Central Mountains": Forty li further north lies 霍山 (Huò Mount), where many trees and grains grow. Here lived a beast resembling a wildcat, with a white tail and mane, named 朏朏 (Fěi Fěi). Keeping it can relieve sorrow. 🙀In ancient legends, Fei Fei is depicted as a divine beast capable of eliminating disease and misfortune. Other sources describe Fei Fei as having a long tail with black markings and crescent-shaped eyes, and being very gentle and never biting. It is said that carrying a Fei Fei with you will ensure peace and health. Therefore, many people longed to find this mythical beast and keep it by their side. 🙀The Song Dynasty scholar 汪若海 (Wāng Ruòhǎi) wrote in his book 《麟书》"Lín Shū": "How can I obtain a Fei Fei to play with, so as to relieve my worries?" This shows that in ancient times, Fei Fei was regarded as a pet that could be tamed to relieve depression. It could arguably be considered the earliest pet of ancient people, even predating domestic animals like cats and dogs. 🙀The Classic of Mountains and Seas does not explicitly define "domestic cat" in the modern sense, but it records various mythical beasts and strange creatures that are extremely similar to cats in appearance or habits, such as the 类 (Lèi) which resembles a cat, the 讙 (Huān), a one-eyed creature that can ward off evil spirits, and Fei Fei which can bring good luck. The ancients often referred to felines as 狸 (Lí). 🙀In modern times, Fei Fei's image has been widely disseminated and reinterpreted in modern cultural works and has become a popular character in several games and anime. It is usually interpreted as having a cat-like figure and erect ears in various colors.

Qin Yuan | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
38th Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 钦原 (Qīn Yuán)
🐦🐝The chapter《山海经·西山经》 "The Classic of Western Mountains" says: Four hundred li southwest, there is a hill called 昆仑 (Kūnlún), where lived a bird shaped like a bee, the size of a mandarin duck, and highly venomous, named 钦原 (Qīn Yuán). If it stings birds and beasts, they die. If it stings trees, the trees wither.
🐦🐝Legend says, Qin Yuan is one of the guardians of Kunlun Mountain. This mountain is also connected to many important figures, including 西王母 (Xīwángmǔ), who is not only the supreme leader of all female immortals and yin energy in the Taoist pantheon, but also an ancient deity who reigns over longevity, the elixir of immortality, and punishment. Her image and status have undergone an evolution from Goddess to immortal.
Bao Yu | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
37th Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 薄鱼 (Báo Yú) 👁As stated in the chapter 《山海经·东山经》 "The Classic of the Eastern Mountains": Three hundred li southeast is 女烝山 (Nǚzhēng Mountain), there are no plants or trees on its summit. The 石膏水 (Shígāo River) originates from here and flows west into 鬲水 (Gé River). Many Bao Yu live here, whose shape resembles an eel and which have only a single eye. Their sound is similar like human vomiting. Its appearance foretells a severe drought. Bao Yu like to hide in the mud and sand at the bottom of the water, and their appearance suggests a drop in water level or even drying up, thus their appearance has a certain plausibility in predicting drought. 👁In the《山海经广注》"Comprehensive Annotations to the Classic of Mountains and Seas" compiled by 吴任臣 (Wú Rènchén), a renowned scholar of the early Qing Dynasty, he added that "When the Bao Yu appears, there will be a great flood." In the Tang Dynasty text 《初学记》"Chūxué jì", Volume 30, quotes a lost passage from the Classic of Mountains and Seas stating: "The appearance of the Bao Yu signifies rebellion," thus linking unusual biological phenomena with social unrest. These multi-layered interpretations reflected the evolution of ancient beliefs in natural disasters. 👁In modern times, according to the folklore from 山海镜花吧, a romantic story has emerged between Bao Yu waiting and a Goddess in the Ge River. However, the Goddess disappeared like a shooting star in the night sky and never appeared again. But Bao Yu was not discouraged, its belief was as firm as a burning flame. It firmly believes that as long as it stays in the Ge River, one day it will be able to reunite with the Goddess.

Xing Tian | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
36th Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 形天 (Xíng Tiān)🪓The chapter 《山海经·海外西经》 (The Classic of Western Regions Beyond The Seas) recorded that Xingtian and the Emperor fought here for divine status. The Emperor cut off Xingtian's head and buried it on 常羊山 (Changyang Mountain). Xingtian then used his nipples as eyes and his navel as a mouth, wielding an axe and shield to dance.Literally, Xing Tian fought for the throne with 黄帝 (Yellow Emperor) and according to another source, it was 天帝 (Heavenly Emperor). In the Shan Haijing records, only the character "帝" is mentioned and many sources referred to "帝" as the Yellow Emperor. After being beheaded, he survived by using his nipples as eyes and his navel as a mouth, fighting with an axe and a shield. In mythology Xing Tian's head was then buried on Changyang Mountain. Nowadays, the mountain is known as 仇池山 (Qiuchi Mountain), located in Xihe County, Longnan, Gansu Province.🪓In ancient times, the three similar-looking characters "形" (xíng), "刑" (xíng), and "邢" (xíng) were often interchangeable, and the character "夭" (yāo) was also changed when it was written as "天" (tiān). During the Eastern Jin Dynasty, 陶渊明 (Táo Yuānmíng) changed it to "刑天", and later 罗泌 (Luó Mì) changed it to "邢天".The character “天” in oracle bone script and bronze script resembles a human head, meaning the top or summit. “刑天” means to cut off one's head. Originally an unnamed celestial deity, he then acquired the name Xing Tian after his head was beheaded.During the Song Dynasty, 《太平御览·卷三·妖异部》 "Taiping Yulan, Volume 3, Section on Strange and Mysterious Things" mentioned that after Xingtian was beheaded by the Yellow Emperor, his descendants formed the "Headless People" tribe.

There is a bird shaped like an owl, with a human face and one foot, called Tuofei. It appears in winter and hibernates in summer. Shan Hui | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
32nd Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 山犭军 (Shān Huī) 🐕👤As stated in the chapter 山海经·北山经 (The Classic of the Northern Mountains): two hundred miles further north there is 狱法山 (Yùfǎ Mountain), and a beast lives there which looks like a dog and has a human face. It has the capability of throwing things and laughs whenever it sees humans. Its name is 山犭军; the ancient text records its real name as 山犭军, not "山挥" (a character with the radical for "dog"/狗 and the radical for "army"/军, which seems untypeable in input methods). The hanzi "山挥" is used instead for ease of typing. Ancient people believed that the appearance of Shan Hui foretells strong winds, and it is a mythical beast symbolizing wind. It moves as fast as the wind, and its appearance foretells a great wind. 🐕👤The legends of the human-faced dog are widespread in both China and Japan, with urban legends even circulating in Japan in 1989 (the first year of the Heisei era) claiming sightings in subways or tunnels. Because of this, the human-faced dog is a modern "star" in Japanese yokai culture. Whether by coincidence or design, some eyewitnesses describe it as "running at around 80 kilometers per hour" and "capable of leaping six meters off cliffs," which to some extent, aligns with Shan Hui's description of being "swift as the wind." 🐕👤Some argue that the prototype of the Shan Hui may not be a canine, but rather a baboon – a primate also adept at throwing. This theory is supported by the baboon's habits, which align with descriptions in the Shan Hai Jing, such as being "good at throwing", "见人则笑 laughing (calling/barking) when seeing people", and having a "human face". 🐕👤As geographically recorded in Shan Hai Jing, Shan Hui lived in the same place as 䲃魚 (Zǎoyú), the carp fish with chicken feet in the 狱法山 (Yùfǎ Mountain). Knowing Shan Hui is skilled at throwing things, there is also a creature recorded in Shan Hai Jing who is skilled at throwing, its name is 举父 (Jǔ Fù), a monkey with stripes on its arms and the strength of a leopard.

Suan Yu | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
31st Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 酸与 (Suān Yǔ)🐍👁As stated in The Classic of the Northern Mountains: Three hundred miles further south there is a mountain called 景山 (Jǐng Mountain). To the south lies 盐贩之泽 (The Salt Merchant's Marsh) and to the north 少泽 (Shǎo Marsh). The mountain is covered with grass and yams, and hot pepper grows abundantly among them. Its shady side is rich in ochre, and its sunny side is rich in jade. There is a bird resembling a snake, with four wings, six eyes, and three legs. Its name is derived from its distinctive call. This creature was considered an omen of misfortune. The ancients believed that its appearance foreshadowed terror or panic. Eating Suan Yu's flesh can prevent drunkenness.🐍👁景山(Jing Mountain) is located in southeastern Wenxi County, Yuncheng City, Shanxi Province. To the south, one can see 盐贩之泽 (The Salt Merchant's Marsh) as 郭璞 (Guō Pú), a well-known scholar from the Western Jin Dynasty, annotated "Salt Merchant's Marsh" as referring to the Hedong Salt Lake (present-day Yuncheng Salt Lake, Shanxi Province) and to the north, one can see the 少泽 (Shǎo Marsh, an ancient river name)

Leishen | The Classic of Mountains and Seas
30th Illustration of 山海经 (The Classic of Mountains and Seas) - 雷神 (Léishén)🐲⚡The depiction of the Thunder God recorded in The Classic of Eastern Regions Within The Sea states: The Thunder God resides in 雷泽(Léizé), a place located west of the 吴(Wú) region. It has the body of a dragon and the head of a human. When it hits its abdomen, thunder will resound throughout the world.🐲⚡《诗纬含神雾》The Shīwěi Hán Shénwù recorded, there was a Chinese Goddess 华胥 (Huáxū) became pregnant after stepping on the footprints of the Thunder God and gave birth to 伏羲 (Fúxī) in 雷泽边 (Léizé lake). Some believe that the giant footprint was left by the Thunder God, meaning that Fuxi we know is the son of the Thunder God. This place is often associated with ancient lake legends such as 菏泽(Hézé) and 大野泽(Dàyězé), and is located in the present-day southwestern Shandong region of the Yellow River flood plain, both of which are important geographical and cultural landmarks.🐲⚡Ancient people didn't fully understand the natural phenomenon of thunder, thus various legends gradually evolved. They believed that thunder came from the sky, and dragons also soared through the sky, and that combining the two would bring thunder and rain.🐲⚡The term "Thunder God" in later generations generally refers to all deities who control thunder and lightning. Ancient myths about the Thunder God are diverse and complex and many various ancient texts describe the characteristics of the Thunder God differently.
