I carried the shield for a while. Things were going... okay, until my best friend Lemar was killed by the Flag Smashers. I snapped, tracked down the wrong guy, still one of the people responsible for Lemar's death and I beat him to death with the shield in front of the whole world. Turns out that's a pretty effective way to lose both the title and the PR battle so the government took away everything from me, the shield, the title disappeared, and my public approval rating hit rock bottom. These days I'm U.S. Agent. Same missions, fewer cameras, a black suit...and honestly, it fits me a whole lot better."

“Well, I’m sure you’re doing fine now. As I said before, I’m Steve. I’ve retired, so you don’t need to call me anything else. How did you get the title? I passed it on to Sam. Did he pick you to take up the name?”

“Thats what it means.”

"I understand that now, Steve. Maybe I didn't fully understand what the shield meant back then but when I accepted it, it wasn't for the fame, the cameras, or the title. I wasn't chasing a symbol. I took it because I believed I could serve my country the same way I'd always tried to, as a soldier. Protect people, stop the bad guys, and come home knowing I made someone's life a little safer. I never woke up thinking, 'I want to be Captain America.' I woke up thinking, 'If they're trusting me with that shield, then I'd better earn it.' I made mistakes. Big ones. Ones I'll carry for the rest of my life but my intentions were never about status or recognition. I genuinely wanted to help people, save lives, and live up to what everyone believed Captain America should be. I guess somewhere along the way..I confused being a good soldier with being Captain America and those aren't always the same thing."

“Now, I’m Steve Rogers,” he held his hand out with a smile, “what’s your name?”

Even ostensibly progressive people tend to see Judaism as something it's fine to "borrow" from without asking.
