Ken Platt passes on knitting skills to primary schoolchildren.
A great-grandad is proving that knitting isnโt just for girls with his classes at a primary school. Ken Platt, 74, started knitting almost 50 years ago and now heโs passing his skills on to boys and girls at his local school. Three times a week, retired engineer Ken heads to Tintwistle primary school in Glossop where he teaches children a skill that will last a life time.
Ken says: โIโm a man in a womanโs world so I have to get it right! Youโve got to prove yourself and thatโs why I think the men who do knit are often very good. I think itโs a bit like why men are often better cooks. The ones who do it look on it as a vocation whereas a lot of women see it as a chore.โ
Unlike the children he teaches, Kenโs passion for the craft only began in adulthood after watching his late wife, Sylvia, at work with her knitting needles. He says: โIt was 1964 and my wife was knitting. I could see the needles moving but I couldnโt see what she was doing so I asked her and she showed me. I found it quite easy and the second thing I ever made, in 1966, was an Arran jumper which I still wear.โ

Definitely trying some of these next time the kids and I play. This will put a damper on their strategy. LOL
I finally finished (a few weeks ago) the pair of socks for my youngest. Took me 3 tries to get them to fit around his heels. They're a little loose around his ankles, but he loves them.

Here I am, re-knitting the third pair of sock & just noticed I never shared the second pair. I finished these Mother's Day Weekend, while the kids made dinner.

Another stashbusting project that's getting finished up soon. I'm also working on my final round of sock commissions before putting everything on pause in late June. It's a tossup whether my current headspace is due more to babysitting every piece of prepping for top surgery, or not getting the silence I need regardless.
Part of my prep includes wanting to clear out some ready-made items from my inventory, to help with travel expenses. Anyone who favorites my Etsy shop before May 22nd (2020) has a chance to get coupon codes, full details here

Sounds like fun
I keep saying that I'm going to start a blog. The closest I've gotten is a journal that I'm scribbling in. My plan was to spend the summer using up my sock yarn stash. But, if I have to be cooped up during a #pandemic #quranatine I might as well have something to do. Plus, it's been raining a lot. This is the first pair. Just a simple pair of toe up socks made with....um.... colorful sock yarn. I roll my yarn into balls when I buy it. So, needless to say the label is long gone. I'm not a fan of sewing & I never really learned how to graft stitches together. So, most of the socks I made (& still make) are toe up & short-row heel. This is the first time I tried a star toe. I also always follow some sort of stitch pattern. It's easier to make 2 socks the same because I count pattern repeats. This yarn wasn't exactly stitch pattern friendly, but it looks pretty cool. Everything I do on the first sock gets written down in my journal & I follow that for the second sock. ๐
