βIβll come to you,β Dean said, too quietly, and for a moment the room was unbearably full.
He made as if to leave, but hesitated, glancing back over his shoulder. Something unsettled flickered in his eyes as a question surfaced, uninvited but impossible to bury.
βDo you believe in evil, detective?β Dean asked.
Castielβs gaze lingered on him, tracing the arc of Deanβs jaw, the constellation of gold in his irises, the dusting of freckles that made him look almost boyish, if it werenβt for the tired shadows, and the weathered edge that spoke of years spent getting up after life knocked him down. It wasn't an unattractive quality. It was honest.
βIβm not sure I believe in evil the way you mean it,β Castiel replied, the words slow and careful, as if purposefully shaping them would make them true. βBut I want to believe in consequences.β
Dean seemed to consider that, turning it over in his mind and weighing its honesty. He finally nodded, and Castiel watched him go, every step etched in his memory. He did not write down what he was thinking. Some confessions were meant only for the dark.
