Art block Castiel on this fine (read blazing fucking hot) Sunday
it's hard to wrap my head around, at 400 million years, just how old Castiel actually is. 400 million years puts his creation in the Devonian Period, a time when complex relationships were first being formed on land. Castiel is as old as terrestrial ecosystems. He's older than songbirds, than flowering plants and all land vertebrates. The famous "don't step on that fish, Castiel," is still 35 million years away when the tiktaalik becomes the first first four-legged vertebrate to clamber onto land. The trees of his day didn't have the hard insides we know, but were weird and soft and spongy inside. Without animal vocalizations, the world sounded like wind, like water, like insect wings. Castiel is older than the seven stars that make up Orion and older than Sirius by hundreds of millions of years. He was a young when the mountain range that is shared by Scotland and Appalachia was still connected. He's older than motherfucking Pangaea.
Maybe Naomi knew then, that he was doomed from the start. Of course he'd feel a fondness and a desire to protect life when he was there for it. Of course, he'd love the dirt bound, the struggling beauty, the evolution, the animals in the sun.

There's something in "the story became the story" of Bad Boys and the fact that it's Sam who urges Dean to tell Cas about CBGB in The Things We Left Behind.

Is Dean being a mechanic supposed to be a negative image for following in John’s footsteps? I’m seeing this more and more but i never saw it that way and im s bit baffled…. I always saw it as humble civilian work. Whereas Mary’s family business was the spicy thing.
I haven't seen any of the posts you're seeing, but I certainly don't see Mechanic!Dean in a negative light. Looking at it through the John lens (which I'm really not sure is fair to begin with, kind of like Dean putting himself down for loving Baby isn't fair in 3.10—and the car is actually Dean's in the truest sense of the word as we see in 4.03)... we're talking about early John who was a mechanic. Before he buried himself in the revenge quest. Something closer to the John who says in "The Song Remains The Same" that John should never have raised his children as hunters. So yes—I think your angle of "humble civilian work" is very apt.
If we think back to 9.07 "Bad Boys", being a mechanic for Dean is also tied rather pointedly into Dean's desire to escape his ongoing parentification.
YOUNG DEAN: I want to be a rock star, but... I also really like cars. YOUNG ROBIN: Being a mechanic seems rough. YOUNG DEAN: What? No, no. Not at all. Cars are freaking cool as hell. Fixing them is like … a puzzle, and the best part is when you're done, they leave, and you're not responsible for them anymore.
I hope you like this slightly whimsical, slightly creepy Cryptid!Castiel piece!
In my head, Castiel is kind of like the patron saint of hunters in this AU. Dean regularly comes to visit him, leaving little offerings, lighting candles, and praying for protection before heading back out into the world. I don't know... I just love the idea of their relationship having this almost mythical, reverent quality to it. 💙
