dean sitting with john in some no name bar in bumfck nowhere, with some other hunters, after a sucessful hunt. scratched up and bruised but alive, celebrating. some beer some whiskey, better than the usual. its a light atmosphere, jokes, laughter. for the first time since sam left them dean feels like the smile on his face aint fake. one of the hunters praises john and dean on their quick thinking, and dean is just about crack a wise remark when john, tipsy, in a sharing mood apparently, brings up sam. the real brain of the family, you should have seen him. john mentions the kid graduating despite all the moves, getting into stanford. The look of pride on john's face. and for all that dean is proud of the kid, in that moment, he can't help the sharp sting of betrayal, and jealousy. because dean didnt even finish high school. he dedicated all the time he had to helping john. and john hadn't even thanked him, beyond the shoulder pat once they burned all the evidence. and here he was, sitting in a bar, so proud of his younger son, boasting to all the hunters there, when only a few months back he'd told sam, if he went, to stay gone. and dean was just there, expected, like a gun in a holster. you didn't praise it for going off when you pressed the trigger, because that was what guns were for.
sam sitting in the library in stanford california. surrounded by books and books and books. all he'd ever been allowed to do was read the books, figure out the monster, the weak spots. sit on the sidelines while his brother and father dealt with the brunt of it. but he'd grown to like it, the patterns, the breakthroughs. so he applies the same principle to his studies now. the cases are the monsters, and the holes in their defense the silver bullets and holy water he used to help prepare. and if he spends hours upon hours with his head burried in the law of the letters, he wouldn't have to think about the fact that he'd tried to call dad, only to find his phone number blocked. And if dad had blocked him? sam didn't even want to try dean's number. if he was a little braver he'd admit how much the idea teriffied him. he'd blocked deans number in a fit of rage and then deleted the number, as if it wasn't burned into his retinas. because he knew, if dad told dean to block sam? dean probably did it. the perfect son, the perfect soldier, and no matter how much sam wanted to, he could never measure up to his big brother.
