[a row of 5 tweets by Devon Price @drdevonprice reading: "it's cool that Autism is highly correlated with transness because those are both fucking cool shit to be. it's not a problem. it's not a puzzle that needs explaining, it's just two things that fucking own and you're welcome that we have graced you with both." "its cool a lot of people are both furries and trans. its cool that lots of trans sissy porn fetishists discovered their true gender thru exploring what felt pleasurable. i like that there are a lot of people with NPD anf BPD diagnosis in the trans community, those people rule." "im glad lots of people with eating disorders find some peace and perspective after realizing they're trans. im so glad a lot of very online nerds and weebs discover the trans community and finally have a name for why they felt so alienated. its cool our community is this way." "it's no surprise that lots of trans people struggled with self harm before figuring out who they were. it makes sense lots of closeted gay and trans people identified with a gay character before they came out. im glad our spaces can be welcoming to abuse survivors. all good things." "terfs can point to the high correlations between transness and neurodivergence and pull faces about it all they like, all it demonstrates is that theyre eugenicists in addition to everything else. disabled, mad, divergent, weirdass people belong in trans spaces and make us better."]

entomologists are the most fucking wild people ive ever met
i pointed out a cool wasp to one and she just picked it up with her bare hands and started showing me different features she was using to identify the species
on a walk with another one he just paused, turned, violently shoved his hand into some rotting wood and offered me a tunnel web spider like oh okay i guess-
when i was in college i did larp shit and one of the guys in the group was an entomology student and i once watched him drop directly to a plank position in the middle of a swordfight to look at a moth on the ground
a person online: i hate it when adults act like childish little freaks in public, smh. you’re an adult, you should be able to order your own food without help. get over yourself. also, why are some people, like, waaaaaaay too into the stuff that they like? omg, and the people who CLEARLY can’t even have one (1) normal conversation without acting Weird??? it’s embarrassing, u guys are embarrassing, get help
the same person five seconds later: we gotta remember to love and support the autistic community u guys <3
you know, in hindsight this reminds me of something
when i’m at work, people get mad at me for not hearing them the first few times. like, openly agitated. they’ll assume that i’m stupid, or rude, or careless. sometimes they will indirectly chastise me for ‘not paying attention.’ at which point i say “i’m sorry, i’m hard of hearing. you were on my right side and i’m severely deaf in that ear,” and they go “oh my god i’m so sorry i didn’t know.”
yeah. you didn’t, did you? the only available information you had about me was… that i didn’t hear you say something. the thing you hated enough to comment on was that i couldn’t hear you. you don’t get to backpedal once you find out that i have can’t-hear-well disease. i shouldn’t need to present a diagnosis to expect decency from you
if you attach negative characteristics to “didn’t hear what you said,” that will affect how you treat d/Deaf and hard of hearing people. if you attach negative characteristics like “weird and childish” to utterly harmless and well established autistic traits like “doesn’t make eye contact,” that will affect how you treat autistic people. it’s not rocket science
no jkjkjk lololol
HELLO?? hi
Something very simple that allistics have such a bizarrely hard time understanding.
Autistic people don't have "better hearing so sounds are louder." Generally we have average hearing (of course with variation), our auditory pain threshold is lower than an allistic's so sounds hurt at a lower level. The typical allistic threshold of pain (barring any physical or neurological condition) is 130 decibels, a little bit quieter than a jet engine. They can hear gunshots, subway trains and car horns all without pain, though gunshots are above their threshold of discomfort.
For us it varies of course, as with all things autistic, but my threshold is somewhere around where people start talking too loud -- 65-70 decibels. That's a massive divide, so of course it's nearly impossible for allistics to conceive that things that don't even cause them a little discomfort are causing me intense pain, just as it was always impossible as a kid for me to conceive that the sounds that had me going into screaming meltdowns from the pain weren't even uncomfortable for everyone else.
I remember as a kid I would completely lose it before and during thunderstorms, cowering in my room with my hands so tight over my ears I was hurting myself every storm until age 17, and people would suggest to my mom to buy me a thundershirt and it pissed me off -- they really couldn't fathom that it wasn't just anxiety, but that the fear was sourced from physical pain. (Or, you know, that I was her child and not a family pet.) Of course I was going to have a phobic reaction when I saw lightning because by early childhood I learned lightning meant pain was imminent. My mom didn't believe this either and would attempt to "desensitize" me by trying to get me to go outside during storms and fireworks -- because I didn't have the knowledge to explain "Hey, I'm scared because this is actually painful for me," I just assumed people were yelling at me to get over it because it was painful for everyone and I was just uniquely bad at dealing with it.
Even after learning that it hurts us, they don't seem to care, and I can only assume that they don't really process and understand the fact they were just told. They write it off because it is an experience they don't share so they can't imagine it. Just another way that understanding is divided between autistics and allistics despite how what's actually going on is so simple and easy to understand. And that doesn't even touch on autistic children going through this divide who cannot communicate the process their brain is taking.
