Hot take, I don't like the headcanon or the interpretation that Severus's maternal family (the Princes) are rich and influential.
I believe making them a quasi aristocratic pureblood family who would adopt Severus in a heartbeat and surrounds him with riches diminishes his story greatly.
It turns him from âbrilliant half-blood poor kid who fought for every scrap of knowledge against a society that already set him for failure from his conceptionâ into âdisgraced heir who could have had it all.â
Making his maternal family rich and powerful subtly (or not so much) reinforces the idea that worth and talent are backed by old money and blood, even when the narrative of the books and the fandom pretend to critique the blood supremacy culture established in the books.
Giving the Princes a rich and noble status and therefore, making Severus return to this wealth he was deprived at first is transforming his story to the colonial fantasy that Harry Potter (as a series) already is.
It also doesn't even work with the text, since if the Princes were a well-known, influential family, why would Hermione struggle to find anything about them but Eileen's single old photo and afterwards, a tiny note in the newspaper about her marriage? The word "Prince" clearly didn't ring the bell for any of the characters as a last name of some magical aristocrasy. It's even plausible that Prince is a completely muggle last name, and Eileen herself was a muggleborn, or a halfblood with paternal muggle/muggleborn heritage. Definitely way more plausible than Severus' grandparents being some kind of brunette Malfoys.
but why would the marriage of a muggle person and a no-one be in a newspaper at all? I don't think it was purely because of her scientific achievements, if she was as important as to be publicly known (at least a bit) to the point where her personal life is news, Hermione would've known her. +She was definitely pure-blood for him to be half-blood. I feel like they were a pure-blood family that was quietly dying out, that they were once rich and influential but not anymore by the time Severus is born.
It could also be explained with Eileen's family being not necessarily this upper upper rich family that people in fandom insists on making. They could have been a family that had at least a good known business, one of her parents working for the ministry, or her own fucking merits?
You are forgetting that "socials" was a thing before in newspapers, and you didn't needed to be specially famous to appear in it. You just had to attend to the right events to appear there, sometimes it was just used to put obituaries and weddings that were happening that week.
Also, you are treating it like it was a big announcement, which it wasn't. It was a tiny announcement. Literally.
Forgive me for not falling to my knees because James Potter eventually learned not to publicly hex, assault, sexually assault, deform and humiliate random students for existing, in hallways at seventeen years old. i actually find the interpretation that this 'mary mcdonald' character that the fandom has problematic.
in fact, i will say it boldly, i find the fanon interpretation of mary mcdonald as a form of misogynoir.
because tell me why she is headcanoned as a black girl, but her whole character is based around lily (a white woman) and has no real personality or achives anything beyond being her best friend and/or the person she is shipped to get lily out of the way of an mlm ship.
and lets go deeper, on the annoying and disturbing frequency the fandom has on headcanoning that the incident of mulciber was him SA'd mary. not only they do it to deminish the real SA incident led by james towards severus, but they do it out of nowhere and with no real purpose other than shock value and that is the only thing that defines her whole character. it's there, mostly, for cheap horror and angst for lily. ALSO, the fact that mulciber is often headcanoned by the same fandom as a black man who SA'd a woman and is incredibly violent is disgusting as hell. and here y'all come with your "it's not that deep" or "it's just fanon!" or "not everyone" banners, but the fact is:
yall made a black female character a supporting accessory to a white woman and for the angst of said white woman
invent a brutal SA for her that isnât in the text
and cast a black man as the rapist
⌠and thatâs not innocent creativity. thatâs a repetition of harmful cultural scripts; the strong black best friend, the disposable black victim, the black male predator. yall basically made her a black female character whose only purpose is to uplift, love, or die grieving a white protagonist.
if you observe really closely, and i mean really closely, you'll notice that the marauders fandom is everything wrong with the current world and its dominating political climate.
and i mean it. a fandom knitted out of canonically classist characters who were bullies, instead of the teenagers who sacrificed everything they shouldn't have had to for the sake of rebellion and resistance. the teenagers we've read about over the course of seven books. their losses, their grief, their struggles, their deteriorating mental health. and somehow, a huge chunk of hp readers decided that was not appealing enough for them to deal with. they would rather escape to the blank canvas of the 70s and make up happy fanon content surrounding a bunch of carefree, privileged upper class kids. they are not intellectually driven enough to face the harsher canon.
we often tend to make up excuses for people's inexcusable deeds if they're pretty and rich right ? we see that in today's headlines, pop culture and politics alike, all the time. well, the fandom's approach towards james potter and sirius black should hold up a mirror for you as to what exactly keeps things like the met gala and celebrity worship culture relevant in today's world amidst numerous human rights crises.
snape's bullying is primarily excused and defended for the mere fact that he was not good looking and belonged from a poorer, marginalized class of the wizarding society. if they claim it was because he joined an extremist group, there is a high chance its coming from barty crouch jr stan or a regulus black stan. so its basically disguised hypocrisy.
fetishization of the queer community in the name of inclusiveness, perpetrated largely by the wolfstar fandom, is glaring signal that people who claim to be allies often end up repeating the same cycles queer people work tirelessly to break.
treating women characters as wombs for their gay ships' children, using sapphic narratives as nothing more than mere tools to get rid of said women characters and not meaningful themes, defending sexual humiliation, having this odd sense of moral superiority because they have brainwashed themselves into believing that they're a "seperate" fandom, even though they piggyback off of canon characters and the story itself, no ocs, no original work.
they are everything they claim to be fighting against. they will destroy your safe space while claiming they are the safest spaces in the fandom, they will destroy you emotionally for liking or engaging with canon content when they are doing the exact same thing, they will claim to be morally justified and even different while having zero moral grounds themselves. they are blatantly classist, sexist, and disrespectful to the queer community all while claiming to be the opposite.
the marauders fandom represents everything that are recurring topics we notice in the current political turmoil globally. you would agree with me if you have had the intellectual capacity to pick up real books written by actual established authors and not just spend your free time reading fanfics written by naive teenagers with underdeveloped frontal lobes.

I love seeing other Snegulus enthusiasts with the Regulus Stalker/Sev's simp hc!. It's just the right dynamic for this ship. And not just because Severus deserves to be loved that way.
Regulus would be so down for Severus, he can't even process it properly. He is so humbled by the half blood prodigy.

I personally love Regulus Stalker, mainly because I think everyone in the Black family is crazy in their own way, and it's obvious that Sirius has stalker tendencies as well. Since he (reg) sees him, he is fascinated by him, and as the rich little boy socially maladjusted (like a normal person, not like a pureblood) He would be chasing Severus around Hogwarts
Oh totally, Regulus would want him in the same way he probably collects cursed objects or photographs of the Dark Lord. Is he disgusted and distrustful of Snape being a Half-blood? Yes, totally. But he will also feel this guilty interest that he covers with self justification.

nevilles fear of snape is something his entire class laughed with him about, including himself. it was a dumb child fear. but imagine neville 5th year onwards knowing that the teacher that had gotten somewhat close to him, praised him, given him books, etc was one of the people that had tortured his parents to insanity and enjoyed making him relive that experience infront of his entire class. idk, i don't really think snape is that bad.
