This is a question I’ve thought a lot about, to tell you the truth, because it was honestly kind of weird that I latched onto him as a 14 year old. After all, the James that was presented in Snape’s Worst Memory (which was when I first became a 💕 jily shipper 4 life 💕) was exactly the kind of person I hated back then. This might shock you, but I was not cool in high school. (😅) I was shy and nerdy, the closeted queer kid who was really into fantasy novels, and the cool kids, the bullying gang of boys the marauders appear to be in that scene, were exactly the kind of people that made my life hell. I remember feeling slightly sick after reading that scene the first time. I remember being so disappointed.

And yet I became a bit fixated on that scene. (‘A bit’ being the understatement of the century given that I deadass wrote a novel about it in my late 20s lmao.) Part of the fixation was the delicious enemies to lovers fodder that is Jily, of course. But I think even more than that it was James’s capacity for growth that caught my imagination. Because we know from canon that James grew up to be someone that Lily fell in love with, someone that many, many people remember as a good man. We know that he devoted his life to fighting bigotry, even though as a pure-blood wizard, he absolutely didn’t have to. And we also know that even before Snape’s Worst Memory he was doing some incredible things — like accepting and supporting a werewolf when that was pretty much unheard of.

So in one scene, we are presented with this kid who is just an absolute jerk. But when you surround him with the context provided in the series, you get this incredibly complicated, layered, fascinating character. And I really had to grapple to understand him, because from what we saw in Snape’s Worst Memory, I did not relate to him at all. But I wanted to figure him out. I obsessed over it.

In a very real way — because I do think the way we relate fiction to our lives is incredibly real — that capacity for growth, that depth and nuance, gave me hope. It forced me to reckon with the idea that what we see of people isn’t always the full story, and that people can become better version of themselves, if you give them a chance. And I am much older now, I still love James Potter, and I have found this to be very true in life: People can grow. People can learn from their mistakes. People can do better.
