The implication of removing the space is that being trans isn't just one way a woman can be, like being tall or being brunette, but that women who are trans require a whole other noun.

while the point in the original post is true and something one should be aware of, it can be worth mentioning that as a dogwhistle, it can be a false positive from non-native English speakers, as there are several languages which create compound nouns by attaching qualifier words directly to a root noun.

For instance, in Norwegian the preferred and correct term for trans woman is transkvinne, which under the morphological rules of Norwegian is implied to refer to a subset of kvinne (woman). The same is true for most germanic languages other than English, as well as some others such as Chinese.

Native speakers of these languages will therefore often make the mistake of leaving out the space between the words in English, leading to accidental use of the dogwhistle unrelated to contact with or influence by hate groups, meaning that more care than usual should be taken in determining ill intent.

Transphobes will of course weaponize this fact to deflect criticism of their use of "transwoman" or "transman" by claiming it's just because they're not native English speakers, adding plausible deniability and making the words more effective as dogwhistles than other (somewhat oxymoronically) more obvious dogwhistles.

In conclusion, upon seeing someone use "transwoman" one should have the usual response to recognising a dogwhistle:

Examine the text further, be on the lookout for other dowhistles and information to determine the author's intent, including whether the author speaks English non-natively.

The world is probably not horrifically contaminated by microplastics. Sterile laboratories, however, are contaminated by latex and nitrile gloves.

Some questions I had that were answered:

How are gloves made of organic materials contaminating an inorganic sample?

In the manufacturing process, stearate salts are used to remove gloves from molds, these salts have an almost identical size and shape to microplastics.

Does this mean all the old studies are null?

No. Like many scientific studies, this one was conducted in a way that simulates an extreme situation. They tested how much residue was left behind if a researcher were to have pinched a slide between their fingers. However, a professional in a lab should not be doing that. You are supposed to pick up slides by the sides for this exact reason. Some studies may need to be redone, but in general reexamining results is the recommended response.

So are microplastics actually an issue?
