From the PS2, onward, half the reason lots of people buy a Playstation is because it can play movie disks. Back in the day, the PS2 was a cheaper DVD player, than most DVD players. And the PS3 was a cheaper bluray player than most bluray players. The buyers may not have always been gamers, but that allowed Sony to expand its customer base.

Granted, I think the PS2 had a lot of good games, so it being an affordable DVD player, was just another reason why it sold well. But the PS3 didn't have as many games, because it was difficult for developers to make games for, until late in its life cycle. So the PS3 definitely had some bluray-oriented sales.

My brother used to say that I used my Playstations in the Japanese way, because this was most common in Japan during the PS2 era.

Honestly, I eventually used my PS3 more for blurays, after I played all the PS3 games I was interested in.

Even now, with my PS4, I use it more for streaming and blurays, more than anything else. But that's because I've been priced out of gaming. Even though I've realized that my unplayed backlog may as well be a waste of money, and I've decided that i should be saving my dwindling budget in this restrictive economic climate, I still find value in my PS4 because it can play disks.

And with the newer generations gravitating more towards physical media, Sony will be leaving profits on the table and shrinking their possible customer base, if they go thru with leaving disk functions out of their Playstations.
