For another thing, any teacher/TA out on the playground with the kids is still working, and if you’ve ever had only two sets of eyes to monitor 40 or more children (at minimum) you know quite well that it is in fact work. At the school I worked at, we’d swap partway through so we all had 5-10 minutes to rest our feet/get some coffee/use the toilet/have a moment of quiet, and a lot of times the teachers had to use that time to do administrative stuff or prep for the next period anyway. And this was all in Finland, which has kinder worker’s rights than the USA.

Break times are still work. When I worked in schools, from arriving at the school (7:30 at the very latest) to leaving at the end of the day (6:00 on a good day) I got maybe 40 minutes of genuine downtime. If there wasn’t an incident at lunch I could help with. If you think playtimes are just ‘50-100 children are punted out into the sunshine while the teachers all nip off for a smoke’ either you haven’t been paying attention since you were four years old or the US school system is even more appalling than my research has led me to believe.
