Ok phew, geology encompasses a broad scope of disciplines tobe honest. Firstly there are many fields a geologist can specialize in likesedimentology, geochemistry, geophysics, seismology, hydrogeology, etc. Manyindustries value specialists, so later in your undergraduate studies it’s agood idea to think about what you’re really interested in while consideringwhere your strengths and weaknesses lay. If you’re more mathematically-inclined rather than having a strong sense of visuals - especially in 3D - you might consider geophysics rather than geology, for example.

A lot of people end up working at some point in the Energy(both renewable and non-renewable) and Natural Resources sectors. The oil andgas industries are popular because they do generate a lot of income (and withthe prospect of fossil fuel depletion, they probably need more capable EarthScientists to work on sustainably managing/extracting resources), though of coursethis is contingent on how well the oil supply meets demands. Mining is anotherpopular choice among geologists. You’ll be a key part in exploration and determining whether the site’s ore supply is of good economical value.

However, I am aware of the stigma that drips from theseoccupations because of the unfortunate disasters resulting fromendeavors to extract resources. If you’re feeling a little greener, try lookinginto hydrogeology (managing the groundwater supply – very important!),environmental geology, and risk management, where your knowledge of Earth’sbehavior really helps insurance companies budget their disaster plans – and,ultimately, save lives! (I feel that’s quite Alfred-ite.) You may find yourselfworking in environmental consultancy and law. People value your knowledge inearth dynamics to help mitigate environmental issues!

There are so many practical paths in a geologist’s career, Ithink, and I can’t really touch on everything in full detail without writing awhole essay. I want to say that a lot of the exciting geology also occur inacademics and research. You might want to pursue a PhD inpaleontology/paleoecology etc. if you’re really into unraveling Earth’s lifehistory, or look into the roots of climate change or planetary sciences, and soon. Survey geologists work for the government to collect geological data, though often requires PhD-level study.

Uhh, hopefully I’ve managed to sketch out someideas on what a geologist could do. Generally, people with geological careerstravel around a lot and have dynamic working regimes with mixtures of officeand field work. It’s ideal for people who like variation and don’t mind moving around a lot, exerting substantial physical strength/stamina at times. I guess this is also why I thought Alfred would be suitable as a geologist. Here are some sites that explain the options better than Icould.
