You never know who’s listening, or if your words are exactly the little push that author needs to take a trip down memory lane and remember all the wonderful things that inspired them to write the fic in the first place. Think about it, Reader. YOU could be the person that RESURRECTS THAT FIC!

Note on the comments: They really do help. I have a fic I haven’t updated in seven years. People commented on it, and not just “hope you post more” but about specific things they liked, and… I finished it.

There was another fic, really intensive, really long, really reliant on canon, and things happened in canon that made working on it really discouraging. But one person commented. It was incredibly kind and detailed and helped inspire me, and I just posted the 35th chapter of 52, and I’m trying to finish it again.

So if there’s a writer you want to see write more, I can’t tell you how much commenting on their fics really does help. Hits are one thing, kudos are great, but I don’t think anything helps a writer feel like their work matters to someone as someone taking time to leave a comment.
