i’m not even sure when chris and claire actually became orphans. source material just says “tragic accident” like it’s a throwaway detail, no elaboration, no footnote, which is absurd when you consider how it basically defines the rest of their lives. so, you are left to imagine: how old was chris when suddenly he was not just a brother anymore but the nearest available approximation of a parent, with zero training in parenting except maybe what he had half absorbed from late night tv sitcom reruns.
and then you think about the practical stuff. halloween, for example. it is october 31st, they have no money, claire is a little kid who still wants to dress up, and chris has to improvise. now picture him in the late 1980s, when he is in his prime hard rock phase, when the cultural water he is swimming in is all queen, ac/dc, guns n’ roses, metallica. (he is the kind of guy who, if you asked him in 1989 who his favorite philosopher was, would have said “lemmy.”) so of course the solution is to take a red headed ten-year-old, put a bandana on her, maybe some cheap sunglasses, and voilà: miniature axl rose.
and something about that image feels both hilarious and heartbreakingly earnest. this teenage boy who is grieving and broke and maybe too stubborn to ask for help, but still out here trying to make his sister feel like halloween is halloween.

Claire just going, right, to Raccoon City, to Europe, because she basically internalized at an early age that the “parental safety net” is not a thing she gets. Very true. And so she and Chris end up in this weird feedback loop where they kind of raise each other, or maybe it’s more accurate to say they survive together, which is not the same thing as “being raised,” exactly, but it produces similar gestures. (Claire makes sure Chris eats, Chris makes sure Claire doesn’t walk into a knife fight unarmed, etc.)
And this is what I love about Claire's instincts in RE2, she just knows. She knows something is wrong and immediately seeks him out, because that’s the rhythm they’ve always had: one falters, the other notices. Whereas Chris, by contrast, leaves for Europe and tells Jill to tell Claire everything’s okay. Which is not really about truth so much as it’s almost like he’s trying to keep her in a terrarium of reassurance, to maintain her idea of stability even though he doesn’t actually know what’s coming (and of course the outbreak detonates all that).
And so you get this pattern with him, protective yes but also a little controlling, like he’s still acting as if she’s a child and not a fully grown adult who is probably better at some survival instincts than he is. Which is also why, much as I adore him, Chris’s decisions are not always, you know, the best decisions. (And the wild part is he repeats this behavior years later with Ethan, keeping him in the dark “for his own protection,” and the inverse winds up happening) It’s tough to be a Redfield.
Yeah, Claire even mentions in Revelations 2 that Chris could be controlling growing up, but then that's generally how people who are too young to be in parental roles end up acting. It definitely provides an interesting angle to Claire's fairly confrontational relationship with male authority figures other than Chris. (It's kind of fascinating how in DI, Claire falls back into her little kid sister role when interacting with Chris compared to how she interacts with pretty much anyone else.) So much of Claire is her trying to shape a path not overshadowed by her brother.
I'm kind of in the minority thinking that Chris' actions in Village making perfect sense from a characterization perspective, haha. Often trauma responses when left untreated become more pronounced as you get older and Chris hasn't exactly been to therapy I would wager. If anything, the additional 20 odd years of death and betrayal would make him even more paranoid about controlling how others act in potential combat situations. And ultimately his instincts about Ethan being both infected and running headlong into fights he doesn't stand a chance in weren't exactly wrong. Chris' just has a complex about making himself responsible for the decisions of fully autonomous grown-ass adults because I suspect on some level he sees them the same way he saw Claire growing up.
