He’s just getting home from dinner with some friends. It’s nearing 12:30 at night, and Cas is in his car, waiting for the rain to pass. It’s May, in the Midwest, so rain is expected. He just wished it didn’t rain every single time he stepped out of his new apartment, because he always manages to forget his umbrella.
Just as he’s mulling over his most recent life choice of moving here just at the start of the stormy season, he glances out his windshield, and he freezes.
Some crazy, obviously-doesn’t-know-what-time-it-is man emerges from his building, carrying what looks like an empty box and a 2/3 full garbage bag. Once Cas regains some semblance of brain function, he realizes the man is in his underwear.
Objectively, he thinks, the man is attractive. Tone, muscular legs and shoulders are the first thing that registers. Cas usually needs more than just a skewed view from through his car’s rain streaked windshield to tell if a person is truly attractive to him, looks aren’t what he first notices. Usually.
The man looks tan, but Cas thinks it might just be a trick of the yellow insect light above the door to his building.
As the man gets closer to the dumpster, just two parking spaces away from where Cas’s car is, the second thing that registers is that yes, the man IS tan, because the perfectly white street lamp is now revealing unobstructed-by-yellow-light bronzed, beautifully freckled skin.
But the third thing, the third thing is suddenly Cas’s favorite thing about this whole strangeness happening before him: his eyes. Castiel thinks exhaustion must be playing a role here, but as the man looks up and catches his eye, Cas could swear his eyes are so /green/. Greener than the grass being illuminated by the water droplets catching the light from the street lamp. Greener than leaves on a tree when unobscured sunlight is filtering through. Greener than, well, anything he’s ever seen before.
Castiel sits in his car, unable to take his eyes off of this Adonis and his insane, greener than the actual color green eyes. The man sees him, and gives a tiny nod and a smile. Cas thinks, if he wasn’t sure the man was attractive or not before, he knows now. The smile, however small, lights up his features in a way that Cas can’t even really describe. Not surprising, since his brain seems to have taken a short leave of absence anyway.
The man just throws his trash away, in the rain, in his underwear, in the late hours of the night, and Castiel finally realizes he’s smiling at the door to his building as it closes. Then his brain begins to process what he’s just seen more clearly, and he is almost giddy at the notion that this beautiful, green-eyed man /lives in his building/.
Cas hasn’t lived here long, only about a month. He hasn’t really encountered any of his neighbors, nor was he expecting to seek out any encounters with said neighbors. But now, he’s smiling. Hopeful that the man he’s just seen actually lives here, isn’t visiting a girlfriend or something. Because he really wants to stare into those eyes and see if they’re solid green, or contain flecks of gold, or have beautiful hazel centers. He wants to map them out and commit them to memory.
This, he thinks, he /hopes/, might actually be the start of something.
