I think literature occupies the same relationship to life that life occupies to death. A book is life with one dimension pulled out of it. And life is something that lacks a dimension which death will give it. I imagine death to be a kind of release into the imagination in the sense that for characters in a book, what we experience is an unimaginable dimension of freedom."
Terrence McKenna
Im amazed this didnt come across my dash with a billion ignorant comments full of vitriol and ignorance taking Colbert at face value.
I actually really love this because he may have been messing around but this is a good way to think. If you see everyone as one race- namely, the one you are- then you are more likely to focus on their personalities. There are always going to be assholes and good people in each race so itâs pointless to judge people on the color of their skin or what country theyâre from when you can just judge them on the fact that theyâre an asshole
........
A quick editorial cartoon about the intersection of self-pity, entitlement, rape, territoriality, misogyny and fear of women. You see it all over the place online in the form of Menâs Rights Activists (of whom there are a few reasonable non-misogynists), Men Going Their Own Way, Pick Up Artists, and dudes touting the âRed Pillâ, because The Matrix is a good movie. Look any of these up if you have the stomach for it. These are extreme examples, but watered-down forms of these ideas are everywhere.
In lurking their blogs and youtube channels for a while, Iâve noticed that beyond the standard patriarchal chauvinism there is this deep fear of women - what they will do to me, how they will reject me, how they will use me, how they are changing society in a way that does not favor me, how they are making men into something I donât like, how they are making themselves into something I donât like, that they wonât give me what I want, and that they wonât give me what I think is rightfully mine. This goes beyond fear of feminism- this is fear of women at its purest. And that, to quote a puppet, leads to anger and hate. Itâs sad.
I am a feminist. I think thereâs enough ice cream to go around, but it does mean those of us with 3 scoops might have to give one or two up. Also, The Matrix is a fun movie but probably not anything you should be basing a philosophy on.
EDIT: I WROTE A LENGTHY POST ABOUT THIS HERE.
about this college decision

Dear College or University, Having now reviewed the many rejection letters received in the last few weeks, it is with great regret that, despite your collegeâs outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I must inform you that I am unable to accept your rejection at this time. This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. Unfortunately, the number of rejection letters that I can accept is very limited. It is for this reason that I was forced to reject the rejection letters of many qualified institutions. Please understand that this is in no way a judgment of you as a college or as an institution, since my decision has more to do with the rejection pool than anything elseâ with such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals. This was not an easy task. Each rejection was reviewed carefully and on an individual basis. Many factors were taken into account, such as size of the institution, student-faculty ratio, location, reputation, cost and social atmosphere. Elimination under this system does not mean your university is not suitable for rejection, but merely reflects the high caliber of colleges and universities competing for my acceptance of their rejection letters. I am aware of the disappointment that this decision may bring, for these were not easy judgments. Throughout my deliberations, I have kept in mind the importance to you of this decision. I wish it were possible to cite specific reasons for each of the determinations I have made but, frankly, it is not. It was even necessary for me to reject some letters that were clearly qualified as rejections. This is surely my loss. Since all of my decisions are made at one time and all available rejection spaces have been committed, all decisions are final. Therefore, I am sorry to say I will be attending your university this Fall. I look forward to seeing you then. I appreciate your disinterest in me, and, although it may seem inappropriate to you at this time, let me take the opportunity to wish you the best of luck in rejecting future applicants. Sincerely, Me

Reading this now!
Back cover of the box says:
With the increasing electronic incorporeality of existence, sometimes itâs reassuringâperhaps even necessaryâto have something to hold on to. Thus within this colorful keepsake box the purchaser will find a fully-apportioned variety of reading material ready to address virtually any imaginable artistic or poetic taste, from the corrosive sarcasm of youth to the sickening earnestness of maturityâwhile discovering a protagonist wondering if sheâll ever move from the rented close quarters of lonely young adulthood to the mortgaged expanse of love and marriage. Whether youâre feeling alone by yourself or alone with someone else, this book is sure to sympathize with the crushing sense of life wasted, opportunities missed and creative dreams dashed which afflict the middle- and upper-class literary public (and which can return to them in somewhat damaged form during REM sleep).  A pictographic listing of all 14 items (260 pages total) appears on the back, with suggestions made as to appropriate places to set down, forget or completely lose any number of its contents within the walls of an average well-appointed home. As seen in the pages of The New Yorker, The New York Times and McSweeneyâs Quarterly Concern, Building Stories collects a decadeâs worth of work, with dozens of ânever-before-publishedâ pages (i.e., those deemed too obtuse, filthy or just plain incoherent to offer to a respectable periodical).

Atoms themselves are more force than matter, mostly hollowness and collapse, yet they cling to form the breathing bodies we call friends and lovers. The universe itself is a void so vast the stars are tiny things and the planets only guessed at by the deviations they create, the anomalies of orbit. And maybe we're all anomalies in each other's lives, circling stars that may not be of our own choosing, sending codes into the bigness that we hope someone will decipher, to redeem us from coincidence.

âI want you to tell me about every person youâve ever been in love with. Tell me why you loved them, then tell me why they loved you. Tell me about a day in your life you didnât think youâd live through. Tell me what the word âhomeâ means to you and tell me in a way that Iâll know your motherâs name just by the way you describe your bed room when you were 8. See, I wanna know the first time you felt the weight of hate and if that day still trembles beneath your bones. Do you prefer to play in puddles of rain or bounce in the bellies of snow? And if you were to build a snowman, would you rip two branches from a tree to build your snowman arms? Or would you leave the snowman armless for the sake of being harmless to the tree? And if you would, would you notice how that tree weeps for you because your snowman has no arms to hug you every time you kiss him on the cheek? Do you kiss your friends on the cheek? Do you sleep beside them when theyâre sad, even if it makes your lover mad? Do you think that anger is a sincere emotion or just the timid motion of a fragile heart trying to beat away its pain? See, I wanna know what you think of your first name. And if you often lie awake at night and imagine your motherâs joy when she spoke it for the very first time. I want you tell me all the ways youâve been unkind. Tell me all the ways youâve been cruel. See, I wanna know more than what you do for a living. I wanna know how much of your life you spend just giving. And if you love yourself enough to also receive sometimes. I wanna know if you bleed sometimes through other peopleâs wounds." --Andrea Gibson

To observers, they looked like strangers sitting opposite each other in the coffee shop but not interacting at all.
But they were best friends who just liked to be near each other, reading.
