Grace: *Retroactively freaking out about Doing A Misogyny™*
Rocky: Me and the bestie!!! :)
Imagine Grace defined his name as the elegance definition of grace and Rocky spends years thinking how fucking ironic this clumsy leaky space blobs name is.
Until Grace slips out a sentence along the lines of "could you give me a little grace here" and Rocky immediately points out he used a word wrong so Grace has to explain that yeah, grace means elegance but it can also mean mercy sometimes too.
And Rocky has to suddenly reconcile that the clumsy leaky blob that saved his life twice, that almost certainly doomed himself to come back for him, name is Mercy.
Imagine that Eridians grow with age, so when Rocky first left Erid, Adrian was around the same size as them, but now coming back all these years later Rocky reunites with Adrian and they're now like three times the size of Rocky.
Rock doing the equivalent of blushing furiously and swooning like "omg... my mate is so so so beautiful."
Also imagine that they never stop growing until death, so maybe by the time they reach 600-and-something and die of old age, they're MASSIVE.
So an old Eridian will just lumber off a ways, sit down, and pass on. and boom. they're a mountain now. That's a mountain.
Rocky leads Grace to two towering mountains and points up at them like "look look look! These were Rocky's parents!"
the scene where Rocky runs off to get a clock, and Grace kinda just stands there waiting and apologizing for talking so much while Rocky bops back into the screen, just chirping away--and we know those aren't idle sounds. it's language. it's Rocky talking, just as much as Grace is talking. Rocky has been so, so alone for so, so long and meets this creature who makes so much noise all the time, and even though they're sort of talking over each other it must be such a comfort to just have something to talk at, to have something talk at him. imagine if Rocky had known that Grace was apologizing for being the sole beacon of sound and life Rocky has come into contact with in five decades.

Can you imagine being stuck in space completely alone with only the corpses of your friends for company, and the first living thing you meet after 46 years of that misery is a fucking weird alien creature who just rolls up with crazy advanced tech and goes "hi let's work together" and makes it possible for you to save your world through the power of friendship and molecular biology. AND THEN you find out that in this creature's language, its name means "mercy". Happened to my good friend Rocky btw
Grace making huge advencements in the Eridian medical field.
Turns out there's a childhood disease to the tune of measles that erodes the carapace, and the first symptom shows up about a week before any actual damage is caused.
Grace comments to Rocky that one of his students seems to be turning oxidisation-green. About a week later that student has to be hospitalised for this illness.
Eridian scientists realise pretty quick that Grace can detect the illness long before any of their equipment can, and when caught that early it is much, much easier and safer to treat.
Not only is Grace celebrated in the scientific field for his knowledge and for his part in saving the world, he becomes a beacon of hope for doctors and parents and children on Erid.
God can you imagine being Rocky?
You're sick. You recognise the symptoms from your crew, you have radiation poisoning. The astrophages that were protecting you and powering the ship are gone. You couldn't find the leak in time to stop it. And now you're dying out here in space, alone.
The life support systems on the ship are shutting down. Everything is shutting down. Your planet will die– your entire star system will die. They'll never know how close you came to saving them.
You think about Grace. Is his ship dying too? Or is he on his way home, none the wiser to your fate?
Maybe you're fighting until the end, or maybe you've 'made peace' with it.
And then you hear knocking, on the outside of your ship. Furious, desperate banging on the window. Your friend, your lab partner, your first contact, has come back to save you.
Amaze amaze amaze.
Apparently Eva Stratt at the end of the movie on the ship had a prison tattoo on her neck that meant something along the lines of "life without parole." So, parallel to Grace and Rocky's adventure, there was a whole subplot where Eva Stratt
- Was eventually trialed by governments of the world as a scapegoat and sent to prison
- She somehow BROKE out of said prison and currently commandeers a rogue paramilitary faction of Project Hail Mary loyalists who believe in her over world governments, who presumably are still hunting her down
- She currently is on the run and staying mobile on an ice breaker ship like some kind of james bond villain base (but you know, good) while STILL working on project hail mary the whole time
- Her rogue loyalist faction controlled enough resources they could go to space and collect the beetles Grace had sent. Alternatively, it was the world government that collected the beetles, and Stratt had a whole ass heist movie to steal them, which is why she had the little xenonite figure at the end of the movie. Either ways she was running circles around them.
Absolutely insane. Never piss off a history major
*points a loaded gun at you*
Ryland Grace will have the biggest funeral of any human ever
He already was the reason for the 2nd largest Eridian Thrum
When he passes, two entire planets will celebrate his life. (Head cannon) Eridians view funerals a bit more light heartedly than humans. While the passing of a loved one still hurts, it also concludes an experience so sacred within the universe. They throw a rager in Graces honor. Rocky commissions a memorial & for WEEKS it’s surrounded with food, dancing, tributes & speeches reminiscing everyone’s experiences with one of the saviors of Earth & Erid, but most importantly their memories with their Friend Grace
Earth will get the memo in an Eridian probe years later. Someone, probably a younger friend of Stratt/a descendant of PHM will give the news. There won’t be quite the collective celebration, but everyone, everywhere, will pay tribute to him somehow. Some families include him in their ofrenda, others whisper to his spirit in the wind, some name their pets for him
Statues are built, of course. On both planets. The two largest are one right outside of Grover Cleveland Middle School & the other is in Grace’s biodome on Erid. He’s wearing the fox sweater in both
Both planets name stars after him. Both planets mourn him. But most importantly, both planets Love him. The Universe cried “Hail Mary!” & it received Grace

After the first time they fell into bed together, Robby feels incredibly insecure and emotional. Sex with Jack was wonderful, in ways he hadn't experienced in a long time. Jack had been sure and gentle and caring and Robby had not been able to form a coherent thought whatsoever. But now it was over. They were both sweaty and a little sticky and Robby didn't know what to do.
Should he stay? God he wants to stay. Stay close to Jack, soaking in the heat, feeling safe and protected in his arms.
Should he leave? They were done and the way they fell into it, didn't really imply any further attachment. A shudder ran through him. This was a one time thing. Probably. It should be enough. It had to be enough. Something to remember and dream about. Nothing more, nothing less.
Slowly Robby got up and looked around for his clothes. He felt naked in a cold way. Ashamed for wanting more. Flustered because he didn't know how to navigate.
"What're you doing?" Jack asked, propping himself up against the headboard.
"I..." Robby started. What was he supposed to say?
I'm leaving?
I need to go?
I'll get out of your hair?
He rubbed his hands over his beard and neck. A habit, that had been built over the years of too much meaningless sex and not enough genuine touch.
"Mikey?" Jacks soft voice interrupted his thoughts. "Come here, okay?" He held his hands out in invitation.
A small, needy sound escaped Robbys throat, as he let himself fall against Jacks chest. The warmth soothing something deep inside his own. His muscles were still tight and he didn't allow himself to relax. Still worried, still not sure if how much of this was okay.
Jack started to rub circles against his naked back with one hand, the other found a place in his hair. Just holding on.
"What do you want?" Jack asked. Always direct in his approach.
"I want..." his voice cracked.
"Just tell me, love"
Love. Jack called him love. Like they were more than brothers in arms. More than friends, who blew off some steam. It was stupid, but it was enough for Robby to be brave.
"I want to stay." he said quietly, almost a whisper. "I want you to hold me." He continued. "I want to come back to you every day and I want you to come back to me."
The hand on his back stopped and went up to tilt his face towards Jack. His lips were captured by the softest kiss, that brought tears in his eyes.
"You can have that Mikey. All of it and so much more." Jack sounded so sure and confident and Robby couldn't do anything else but believe him.
Thinking about "You're have no immediate family. You dont even have a dog." And like duh thats devestating, but theres also the fact that the people telling him this are people hes been working with for 4 years at this point. Theres this quiet implication thats not just "you have no family no pets and no partners therefore you have no one to leave behind" its also "we, your coworkers who you might have called friends and who have been at your side while we all save the world for close to half a decade, are not close enough to you to even be mentioned in Stratts little speech. We will not stop this, we wont even protest or apologize. You have no friends at you side in your final moments." And i think thats even more heartbreaking honestly.
yk I feel like Rocky's opinion on the other humans on project Hail Mary would end up basically just being that one tumblr post about how "I can hate your dad for you"
Like Grace can have complicated feelings and understand that Ms Eva made the tough choice and ultimately did what was necessary and best for everyone in the long run and he forgives her in the end
And Rocky can understand all this but also think that they were dumb and stupid and mean to his best friend
No, Eridians do not hate Earth or Stratt for sending Grace on a suicide mission. They understand that they were desperate and did not have the means to do it any other way, even if they wish the situation for Grace could've been better.
ROCKY however does hate them. He is holding a very personal grudge, because Grace won't. How dare they hurt Grace? How dare they abandon him?
I bet Grace's ejection from earth would become like an Eridian horror story. They forced him to sleep. They held him down and made him go to sleep so he would stop fighting. They kept him vulnerable and put him into a dangerous situation with other sleeping, vulnerable humans with no one to watch over them.
And 2 of them DIED! While they were asleep with no one to watch over them!!
Like they probably already thought Rocky's journey was the stuff of nightmares (alone for decades with no one to watch him sleep) but Grace's story would probably be so terrifying to them. Coupled by the relative ease with which he talks of it. He accidentally mentions it to his class and gets several concerned and angry messages from Eridian parents about him telling horror stories to their children instead of teaching Human Science lol

"Why did Stratt pick a school teacher" — because my guy can frankenstein Venus out of plywood, some duct tape and a dream. "I'm not qualified" — buddy, you have scientific background and the resourcefulness of someone who is used to having zero budget. I love this specific part of the plot that is "let's take the guy who can problem-solve things with zero money and give him unlimited budget and see what happens".
imagine forcibly sending your second in command to space and erasing his memory and having made peace with it for 26 years but then you finally get the back the information that will save the world and you find out that he woke up all alone because the other two died on the way and he didn't know what was going on and he was so scared but he manages to make first contact and he figures it all out anyway AND he might be able to go home with the astrophysics the alien gives him and you feel a part of your heart that hasn't felt alive in decades start to beat again because he might come back in just a few months if what he's saying is right and then you watch the last log and it turns out he needs to go back to save an alien species and he is going to starve to death and you feel the grief all over again.
