you can do what i did. love writing original stories but hate writing original characters. write a series of stories starting at age 8 and all the characters are girls in your grade. then eventually you learn about fanfic but don't engage mostly bc you don't know how to post. did you know in 2015 fanfiction.net required you to upload a word document? do you know who didn't have word on her family computer? ME! So then what you do is check out a laptop from you middle school library and write about percy jackson characters going on a lesbian date while you wait around during play rehearsal because you're only in like three scenes. you'll learn that you need an invitation to get an ao3 account (is that still a thing?) and have to wait around a couple days to post your masterpiece. but then you do and its really really cool because being apart of fandom is really really cool.

THEN eventually after say maybe 11 years you'll get an ask like this and have to come up with a good answer when really all i got is sometimes inspiration strikes when you read an article (rpf is fine) or hear a song that reminds you of them or sometimes its just a way to process the trauma that is being a high schooler. I think one of the biggest lies of fanfic is that it has to be relationships. some people may say well the relationship oriented ones get more hits. If i wanted hits i wouldn't have written 20 thousand words about side characters in a tv show nobody watched. Or heated rivalry fanfic in 2023. genuinely everything i've written has been because writing has always been something i need to like eject from my brain. whether that's poetry or journaling or fanfiction or research i write for nobody. I just love writing and fanfic is part of it. i obsess over things and i have to get it written down as a way to articulate my feelings whether thats angst in my 12 years of diaries or inventing new pairings on ao3.
