Absolutely wild to me how sometimes you don't even realize the way you'd been taught to perceive things as a kid was kinda fucked up, actually, until decades later.
Example:
As a kid, I constantly lived in fear of damaging shit in my parent's house. The walls. The floors (especially the floors. The wood was beautiful. Shiny. But so easy to scratch). The cabinets.
As a sixteen-year-old, I once took my car to the dealership after work and paid a very dear sum of $250 ($10/hr cashier salary) to fix a slight scratch in the paint because I knew if my father saw it there would be hell to pay. It didn't matter that I parked far out, like I'd been taught, and someone scratched it anyway. It was my fault. I failed in my duties as a steward of my vehicle.
Every time I scratched a rim on a curb while parallel parking or got a door ding or, god forbid, didn't wash and vacuum that car every weekend, it was treated like some sort of moral failing.
Last year, when my husband and I first moved into our house, he scraped the side of our car when parking in our (Very Narrow) garage. When he told me, my first instinct was to be afraid for him. Like something terrible was going to happen to him because of this mistake. I urgently reassured him that it was okay, it was an accident, I wasn't mad. Baffled, he was like, "Yeah? I know? Like, thank you for the reassurance, but I'm only a little annoyed, I'm not upset. It's just a car." And I had to take several minutes to process that. It's...just a car.
We keep the car tidy. We maintain it. But we wash it maybe 4x a year. We only vacuum it after dirty road trips or when the dog hair starts to get annoying. It has scrapes and dings and the leather seats have stains. But that's ok. Because it's just a car.
This morning, I realized that a small rock had gotten embedded in the felt foot on one of our bar stools. Neither of us had noticed. There are now scratches on our beautiful hardwood floor. My immediate response was fear accompanied by a heavy measure of paralyzing guilt. "I'm so sorry," I told my husband, "I should have noticed. I'll figure out how to fix it, I swear. I can probably sand down that section and match the stain and--"
"Whoa, hey," he said. "It was an accident. And it's fine. Floors are going to get damaged. They're floors. We live here. There was damage in places before we even bought the house, remember? It's not a big deal. It's just a floor." Right. It's just a floor. Right.
My husband's mom is visiting and this afternoon, as I was sitting in the kitchen looking at the scratches on the floor, I offhandedly asked her if my husband had ever broken or damaged anything as a kid. "Of course," she said. Household items. A TV. A wrecked car during his teen years. I asked how she punished him.
"Why would I punish him for things like that?" she said. "They were all accidents."
Right. Of course. Right.

I've mentioned this story on here before, but I still feel really bad about it. so in my writing class, this older woman was talking to me about a book she read. specifically about how disturbing she found a scene near the end, where a dragon/demon/thing has evil nasty sex with a lady. and I was like "that's disgusting, please tell me the title so that I can avoid it!"
and then a few classes later, someone asked me what I was reading. without thinking, I said "oh, it's [book title]" and FROM ACROSS THE ROOM the older woman twisted around to give me the surprised pikachu face. I felt so guilty.
my notifications are once again devolving into a spirited debate about the ethics of actions that could potentially make someone uncomfortable, and at risk of sounding like someone about to get a lot of irate anons I think we're frankly giving way too to much moral weight to hypothetical discomfort
the thing about discomfort is that it's an extremely nebulous category that can be triggered by virtually anything and that's far too broad a category to have any inherent moral quality to it. like. my mom was mad uncomfortable when I stopped shaving. that didn't mean I was doing violence against my mom it just meant she needed to get over herself. many such cases it must be said.
there's not a single example I could give that's better than this
I’m really enamored with the dynamic of two characters who work perfectly in tandem, like pacific rim drift compatible level, but they don’t like each other. It’s not even as strong an emotion as hate it’s just a very neutral-negative dislike, but they still act in perfect concert and their individual abilities are fully complementary
i think there'd be alot less discourse around "fanfic vs literature" if more people treated fanfiction as it's own medium with it's own strength and weaknesses, rather than comparing it to traditional literature, because most of what i love about fan-fiction just straight up does not work in original fiction. at all.

do you think that edgeworth interpreted the incident at gourd lake as divine punishment from The Hand of Fate for almost kind of but not really confessing his gay feelings for god’s dumbest soldier at the end of turnabout samurai
things are getting… spicy in the spice section
more legendborn art YAYA!!! this took SO long for no reason bro
“Why do straight men act so gay with each other haha” bc they find gayness to be funny and feel the need to emasculate each other even when it’s on a friendly level. Do you have any other stupid fucking questions to ask me
yeah the joke is that they're sooo straight that it's hilarious to imagine they would ever be gay.
it's like the white middle class american women who joke about being on drugs, or food they love being drug-like, or having "stripper names." it's only amusing or a useful hyperbole because of the "obvious" reality that they would never ever do drugs or engage in sex work.
it's also a way of separating themselves from the behaviour in question. they are able to joke about it because it is something done by an "other" group that they aren't a part of and would never be a part of.
"sorry you're not my type/i don't my swing that way" from a straight man to another straight man is a way of saying "you're bothering me to such a degree that it feels like you're coming onto me because you wanna fuck me like some gay dude." it's an insult and in some instances a threat, not an acknowledgment of latent homosexuality in either person. it says "the only reason i can think of that you would be trying to be in my business this hard is if you want to fuck me like some kind of sissy faggot, but I'm not a fucking faggot so back the fuck off." it's a way to call another man gay (feminine, lesser) while also asserting their own straightness (masculine, better).
man smack each other's asses to see who laughs (straight) and who gets quiet or weird or uncomfortable (gay). they play gay chicken for the same reasons. it's all hazing rituals and screenings to make sure the men around them AREN'T gay in every way possible. and they try to catch men off guard to make extra sure.
it's very fun to take these social behaviours into fiction and turn them into premises for character analysis or porn, just like any oppressive structure or culture can be fun to play with in fiction. but please understand that that's not what this is used for IRL. it's homophobic behaviour and a symptom of misogyny and patriarchy.
