ちょうど。ほぼちょうど。ええサイズ感。
It seems to have been just the right width.
pretending i was tagged in wip wednesday monday so i can share a blood choke scene i actually worked on for the first time in 500 years
"I think you're right. For whatever it's worth," Sasha says then.
You glance over at him, prickling slightly. "It's worth nothing," you scoff. "Maybe a hundred years ago. But it's too late, now."
Sasha shifts from foot to foot, avoiding your gaze.
"Yeah. I guess so," he sighs. The two of you stand apart, Sasha staring down at his boots as he finishes his cigarette. "But I just want you to know, $name. Whatever happens next... I am on your side."
"What are you, five?" you retort, flicking your own cigarette butt into the gutter. "We can never be on the same side. Atlas has made that very clear, Sasha."
"But I'm not Atlas," Sasha blurts. "I'm not Atlas, and I'm not Julien." He takes a deep breath then. "I just... want to make this right."
"Sure. It only took me coming back from the dead to scare you into it."
"Yes," Sasha agrees, catching you off-guard. "I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I've never done anything bad. That I haven't hurt you, or Valentina. I was-- comfortable. I was safe. That's all I wanted, was to be safe. You coming back-- I'm not safe. It made me realize I was never safe. And I've been turning away from it all for a long time. It's easy to do." He pauses, shaking his head before running a hand through his hair. "It's so easy to do, isn't it?" he repeats.
You narrow your eyes at him, your jaw clenching. "I wouldn't know."
Sasha deflates a little, clasping his hands together. "If I tried to stand up to Atlas, you and I both would have ended up in a goddamn sarcophagus, and Valentina would have been left all alone."
"You and I? But it wasn't you and I. I was the one that ended up in the fucking sarcophagus, Sasha. It was Valentina that was forced to marry that bastard Standard. What the fuck did you do?" You step closer, jabbing your finger at his chest. "But what is it Atlas said? We deserved it, right?" Sasha opens his mouth, but you keep going. "No. There is only one person here who ever got what he deserved, and it was Julien. And if you don't want to end up like him, then get the fuck away from me, Sasha!"
Sasha flinches, and quickly retreats a few steps out of the way as you storm past. You feel his eyes on your back, and you hear him take a long, weary breath-- you stop at the mouth of the alley, glaring back over your shoulder at him. But then he just sighs, bows his head, and lets you go.
seth dickinson i will wait until we are both in the nursing home if that's what it takes. trust 🙏
4. In conclusion I still think Baru 4 will get done. I have been working on it, I’ve known all along broadly what needs to happen, and I’ve done a lot of other work along the way — a novel, several games. But it has been too long since I promised to deliver this book and that’s on me. Part of it is that I now see attention from other writers and fans as something I want to avoid. Part of it is that, with a decent life and steady medication, I no longer feel the extremes of strong emotion that can push a writer to the page. (On the other hand, I no longer spend years in a depressive funk, either.) Part of it is that I’ve probably become too sophisticated and jaded about my own work, too able to see all the ways it falls short. It’s easier to charge forward with a draft when you haven’t learned to sneer at yourself. I don’t know how to fix all this but I suspect it will happen the way it always happens: at some point I will sit down and write the fucking thing, and when I get 100,000 words in, I won’t hate it so much I have to throw it out. I felt like I owed everyone some kind of explanation and update. I’m really sorry this has taken so long. I have no good excuse, because I could have finished by now if I’d just sat down and done it. I’ve just allowed myself to sink into solitary contentedness. Which is nice, but not enough for a writer on a contract. Thanks for bearing with me.

wizard watching a witch get burned at the stake: anyone else feel like there’s a lot of wizard erasure? wizards just don’t have as much visibility in society as witches. i’ve decided to call this phenomenon magicandrophobia.

happy pride from me and my favorite fictional jewish lesbians!
i’ve been sitting on this piece of my favorite scene from The Maiden and Her Monster by @maddiesmartinez for a bit of time now, and figured the people of the internet (and maddie, who i’m surprising with this) could use a mid-pride treat :) pre-order the paperback now if you love political dark fantasy stories rich with folklore and also hot butch monster love interests!
Walking backwards into my future.

Frozen Moments: Norilsk, Siberia through the Lens of Christophe Jacrot
I've had trouble tracking down the original photographers, but these mostly appear to be pictures of the blast furnaces in Belgium (called things like Haut-Fourneau 4/6/B etc.); here are some other pictures of HFB, of HF4 Charlenoi, and some of HF6 Seraing, by other urban explorers. the first picture is probably cables for an arc furnace, I saw one Instagram post claim it was in Canada but it didn't seem to be the original.
just stressed myself out until i died
im really enjoying beyond the pale so far… though im glad i just happened to read here where we live is our country first cus it’s given me so much more context about what was actually happening in the pale of settlement at this time. chava’s two brothers argue ideologies with one ultimately abandoning the family for palestine and the other getting kicked out of the house for being a secular bundist and arguing with their rabbi father. it’s obvious chava is going to take after her bundist brother but i do wish it was a Little more critical of zionism; but i also understand we’re reading from chava’s POV and she’s only 11 and doesn’t fully comprehend what her brothers are arguing about or even know anything about palestine beyond the zionist propaganda she’s heard. but i really appreciate the author only ever referring to it as palestine, and overall it’s clear she’s committed to an accurate depiction of what the average jewish family would have gone through in the pale while still advocating for palestine with chava aligning with the bundist ideals instead.
my favorite part so far was with gutke tho when she goes to her very first dyke party and meets a hot butch who immediately asks her if she reads marx
