The first warning came when your sister texted you three times that morning to ask exactly when you and Seungmin would be arriving.â¨â¨The second came when she opened the front door wearing a dress you distinctly remembered her describing as far too nice for family things.
â¨â¨You looked at her.â¨â¨She looked at you.
Neither of you said anything for a moment.â¨â¨Then Seungmin appeared behind you, one hand holding a neatly wrapped cake box and the other resting comfortably against the small of your back.â¨â¨âHi,â he said brightly.â¨â¨Your sisterâs entire expression changed.
âSeungmin.â She smiled as though she had been expecting him personally. âFinally.ââ¨â¨You glanced over your shoulder at him.â¨â¨He glanced down at you.â¨â¨His eyebrows lifted slightly.
Finally?â¨â¨You bit the inside of your cheek.â¨â¨Your sister stepped aside to let you both in, although she somehow managed to position herself so Seungmin had to pass close to her. He murmured a polite thank you and guided you ahead of him with a gentle hand at your waist.â¨â¨You had been dating long enough that the gesture barely registered anymore. Seungmin was always touching you in small, absent-minded waysâhis fingers brushing yours as you walked, his palm settling on your knee beneath tables, his hand finding the back of your coat when you crossed a road.
It was rarely dramatic.â¨â¨It was simply constant.â¨â¨Your sister noticed.â¨â¨Her gaze dropped to his hand before moving back to his face.
âYou look different in person,â she told him.â¨â¨Seungmin paused while removing his shoes.â¨â¨âDo I?ââ¨â¨âBetter.â
You turned away before either of them could see your smile.â¨â¨Seungmin placed his shoes neatly beside yours, then leaned closer to whisper, âAm I supposed to say she does too?ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âGood.â
You elbowed him lightly.â¨â¨He caught your arm and squeezed it against his side, looking pleased with himself.â¨â¨Your sister was still watching.â¨â¨âYou brought something?â she asked, nodding towards the box in his hand.
âCake,â Seungmin said. âYour mum said she liked the one from that bakery near our flat.ââ¨â¨âThat was thoughtful.ââ¨â¨âShe sent him a photograph of it with the address circled,â you said.â¨â¨Seungmin looked offended.
âShe provided helpful guidance.ââ¨â¨âShe threatened to disown me if we arrived without it.ââ¨â¨âStill thoughtful.ââ¨â¨âYou didnât even pay for it.â
âI carried it.ââ¨â¨âYou made me carry it on the train.ââ¨â¨âFor part of the journey.ââ¨â¨âYou said your arm hurt.â
âIt did.ââ¨â¨âBecause you spent the entire morning playing games.ââ¨â¨Seungmin smiled at your sister. âShe has no sympathy for my suffering.ââ¨â¨âNone,â you confirmed.
Your sister laughed a little too enthusiastically.â¨â¨Not because the conversation had been particularly funny, but because Seungmin was smiling while he said it.â¨â¨You noticed.â¨â¨You also noticed the way she tucked her hair behind her ear before asking, âDo you want me to take that for you?â
She reached for the cake.â¨â¨Seungmin shifted it away automatically.â¨â¨âNo, itâs all right. Iâve been entrusted with it.ââ¨â¨âHeâll cry if anything happens to it,â you said.
âIâll tell your mum it was your fault.ââ¨â¨âYou see what I live with?ââ¨â¨Seungmin bumped his shoulder against yours. âYou love it.ââ¨â¨You opened your mouth to disagree.
He looked down at you expectantly, the beginnings of a grin already pulling at his lips.â¨â¨You hated how well he knew you.â¨â¨âWhatever,â you said.â¨â¨âThere it is.â
He bent and pressed a quick kiss to your temple before following the sound of your mother calling from the kitchen.â¨â¨Your sister remained by the door with you.â¨â¨She watched him leave.â¨â¨Then she looked at you.
âYou never said he was that handsome.ââ¨â¨You blinked. âYouâve seen photographs.ââ¨â¨âPhotographs are different.ââ¨â¨âI suppose.â
âHeâs taller than I thought.ââ¨â¨You stared at her.â¨â¨She stared back, seemingly unaware that there was anything strange about the intensity of her assessment.â¨â¨âDo you need his measurements?â you asked. âI can check the label in his coat.â
She rolled her eyes.â¨â¨âI was only saying.ââ¨â¨âRight.ââ¨â¨âYou donât have to be weird about it.â
âIâm not being weird.ââ¨â¨âYouâre doing that face.ââ¨â¨âWhat face?ââ¨â¨âThe face you do when you think youâre funny.â
âI am funny.ââ¨â¨âSeungmin clearly thinks so.ââ¨â¨There was something strange beneath the words. Something slightly too pointed.â¨â¨Before you could decide whether you had imagined it, she smiled and linked her arm through yours.
âCome on. Mumâs been panicking over lunch for an hour.ââ¨â¨She pulled you towards the kitchen as though nothing had happened.â¨â¨You let her.â¨â¨At that point, it was easier.
๨ŕ§
Your mum adored Seungmin.â¨â¨That was hardly news.â¨â¨She adored him because he arrived on time, complimented her cooking, remembered details from conversations they had months ago and always insisted on helping clear the table.â¨â¨Your dad liked him because Seungmin could discuss football with convincing enthusiasm and had once spent nearly forty minutes helping him fix a temperamental television.
Even your relatives who had only met Seungmin briefly tended to approve of him.â¨â¨He was polite without seeming rehearsed, funny without demanding attention and attentive in a way that made people feel remembered.â¨â¨Your sister had apparently taken all of these qualities as an invitation.â¨â¨At first, you didnât think much of it.
She asked him about work. Normal.â¨â¨She asked about the other members. Also normal.â¨â¨She asked whether he enjoyed travelling, what food he liked and whether he preferred going out or staying at home.â¨â¨A little interview-like, perhaps, but not particularly suspicious.
Then she moved from the chair opposite him to the empty one beside him when your mother asked her to fetch another plate.â¨â¨You looked at the abandoned chair.â¨â¨Then at her.â¨â¨She smiled innocently and crossed one leg over the other.
Seungmin glanced towards you.â¨â¨You were sitting on his other side, close enough that your knees touched beneath the table.â¨â¨He nudged your foot.â¨â¨You nudged him back.
His mouth twitched.â¨â¨Your sister leaned towards him.â¨â¨âSo,â she said, âwhat did you think when you first met her?ââ¨â¨You nearly inhaled your drink.
Seungmin turned towards you slowly.â¨â¨âOh, no,â you said.â¨â¨His eyes brightened.â¨â¨âOh, yes.â
âDonât.ââ¨â¨âI thought she was very strange.ââ¨â¨Your mother laughed from the other end of the table.â¨â¨You stared at him. âThat isnât what you said before.â
âYou told me not to embarrass you in front of your family.ââ¨â¨âAnd this is you behaving?ââ¨â¨âThis is me being generous.ââ¨â¨Your sister laughed, resting her hand against Seungminâs arm.
It was light. Brief enough that she could claim it meant nothing.â¨â¨Still, you saw it.â¨â¨Seungmin looked down at her fingers.â¨â¨Your sister removed them a moment later, smiling as though the contact had been accidental.
âWhat did you actually think?â she asked.â¨â¨Seungmin looked back at you.â¨â¨The teasing softened around the edges.â¨â¨âI thought she was pretty.â
The answer was simple enough to make warmth spread through your chest.â¨â¨Then his smile returned.â¨â¨âUntil she spoke.ââ¨â¨You kicked his shin beneath the table.
He flinched dramatically.â¨â¨âSee?â he told your family. âViolence.ââ¨â¨âYou deserved that.ââ¨â¨âI complimented you.â
âYou immediately ruined it.ââ¨â¨âI said you were pretty.ââ¨â¨âYou said I was strange.ââ¨â¨âYou are strange.â
Your sister tilted her head.â¨â¨âI suppose you must usually date girls who are quite different from her.ââ¨â¨The sentence slipped into the conversation so smoothly that it took you a second to understand it.â¨â¨Seungmin frowned slightly. âDifferent how?â
Your sister shrugged.â¨â¨âYou know. More⌠elegant.ââ¨â¨Your father suddenly became very interested in cutting his food.â¨â¨Your mother looked up.
You glanced down at yourself.â¨â¨You were wearing a jumper and trousers. Nothing particularly inelegant, unless your sister was counting the tiny mark on your sleeve from where Seungmin had flicked sauce at you in the kitchen.â¨â¨Seungmin followed your gaze.â¨â¨Then he looked at your sister.
âNo,â he said. âI like this one.ââ¨â¨You pressed your lips together.â¨â¨âThis one?â you repeated.â¨â¨He patted your knee beneath the table.
âMy favourite.ââ¨â¨âIâm so flattered.ââ¨â¨âYou should be.ââ¨â¨Your sister laughed, but there was something strained about it.
âI only meant that you seem very put together.ââ¨â¨âIâm not,â Seungmin said cheerfully. âShe found me looking for my phone this morning while I was talking to someone on it.ââ¨â¨He looked towards your mother. âYou raised a very critical daughter.ââ¨â¨Your mum smiled. âShe gets it from me.â
âGood to know.ââ¨â¨The conversation moved on, but your sister did not return to her original chair.â¨â¨Every few minutes, she found another reason to address Seungmin directly.â¨â¨Did he like the food?
Had he visited the restaurant she mentioned?â¨â¨Did he think her hair looked better dark or light?â¨â¨That one made you turn.â¨â¨She lifted a section of her hair between her fingers.
âIâve been thinking of changing it,â she explained. âWhat do you think?ââ¨â¨Seungmin blinked.â¨â¨âI donât know.ââ¨â¨âYou must have a preference.â
âFor your hair?ââ¨â¨She laughed as though he had made a joke. âGenerally.ââ¨â¨He looked at you.â¨â¨You had stopped pretending not to listen.
A hint of mischief appeared in his expression.â¨â¨âI like hers.ââ¨â¨You narrowed your eyes. âYou said Iâd look good bald.ââ¨â¨âYou would.â
âThat doesnât count.ââ¨â¨âIt shows versatility.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs hand fell from her hair.â¨â¨âYouâre lucky,â she told you.
The words sounded pleasant.â¨â¨The way she looked at Seungmin did not.â¨â¨You raised an eyebrow. âI know.ââ¨â¨âI mean, youâve never really cared about things like that.â
âThings like what?ââ¨â¨âYour appearance.ââ¨â¨Silence settled over the table.â¨â¨It wasnât complete silence. Your fatherâs fork scraped faintly against his plate, and the clock in the hallway continued ticking.
But the conversation stopped.â¨â¨Your sister smiled as though she had offered you a compliment.â¨â¨âYouâve always been confident enough not to bother,â she added.â¨â¨You knew this routine.
It had existed long before Seungmin.â¨â¨Your sister would say something cruel with a pleasant expression, and if you reacted, she would insist you had misunderstood. That she admired your confidence. That she wished she could leave the house without making an effort. That you were lucky not to care what people thought.â¨â¨Normally, you could ignore it.â¨â¨Today, the comment felt particularly childish.
You opened your mouth, but Seungmin spoke first.â¨â¨âShe spent forty minutes choosing that jumper.ââ¨â¨You turned towards him in disbelief.â¨â¨Your sister laughed.
Seungmin continued, âThen she asked me which trousers looked better and ignored my answer.ââ¨â¨You nudged his side with your elbow.â¨â¨He caught your hand before you could pull it away and linked your fingers beneath the table.â¨â¨The gesture was concealed from everyone else.
His thumb brushed once over your knuckles.â¨â¨You understood what he was doing.â¨â¨He hadnât ignored your sisterâs comment.â¨â¨He had simply refused to let it settle over you.
âShe looks lovely,â your mother said firmly.â¨â¨âShe does,â Seungmin agreed.â¨â¨Your sisterâs smile tightened.â¨â¨âI never said she didnât.â
âNo one said you did,â you replied.â¨â¨Her gaze met yours.â¨â¨For a moment, something sharp passed between you.â¨â¨Then Seungmin squeezed your hand and leaned close enough that his shoulder pressed against yours.
âYou have something on your face,â he whispered.â¨â¨You immediately touched your cheek. âWhere?ââ¨â¨âThe other side.ââ¨â¨You touched the other cheek.
âNo, lower.ââ¨â¨âSeungmin.ââ¨â¨âA little lower.ââ¨â¨You glared at him. âThereâs nothing there, is there?â
He smiled.â¨â¨âYouâre so easy.ââ¨â¨You tried to pull your hand from his.â¨â¨He tightened his grip.
âDonât be sulky.ââ¨â¨âI hate you.ââ¨â¨Your sister watched the exchange with an unreadable expression.â¨â¨You barely noticed.
๨ŕ§
After lunch, your mother attempted to stop Seungmin from helping with the dishes.â¨â¨Seungmin ignored her.â¨â¨He rolled his sleeves to his elbows, collected the empty plates and followed you into the kitchen.â¨â¨Your sister followed him.
Naturally.â¨â¨âYou donât have to do that,â she told him, taking a plate from his hands.â¨â¨âItâs fine.ââ¨â¨âYouâre a guest.â
âSo is she.ââ¨â¨Seungmin nodded towards you.â¨â¨You were leaning against the counter eating a piece of cake.â¨â¨Your sister looked at you.
âSheâs family.ââ¨â¨âShe isnât helping.ââ¨â¨âIâm supervising,â you said.â¨â¨âYouâre eating the dessert we havenât served yet.â
âIâm checking it for poison.ââ¨â¨Seungmin set the plates beside the sink.â¨â¨âAnd?ââ¨â¨You took another bite.
âStill collecting evidence.ââ¨â¨He reached towards your plate.â¨â¨You moved it out of reach.â¨â¨âGet your own.â
âI bought it.ââ¨â¨âI paid for it.ââ¨â¨âWith our money.ââ¨â¨âWe donât have shared finances.â
Your sister laughed again.â¨â¨âYou two are funny.ââ¨â¨You glanced at her.â¨â¨The compliment sounded genuine enough, but her eyes remained fixed on Seungmin.
He turned on the tap.â¨â¨Your sister stepped beside him.â¨â¨âIâll wash,â she offered.â¨â¨âI can do it.â
âYou dry, then.ââ¨â¨You watched her pick up a sponge.â¨â¨Your mother called your name from the living room, asking whether you could help her find something.â¨â¨You pushed yourself away from the counter.
âDonât eat my cake,â you warned Seungmin.â¨â¨âI would never.ââ¨â¨âYou absolutely would.ââ¨â¨He placed one hand over his heart.
âYour lack of trust is upsetting.ââ¨â¨You pointed the fork at him. âIâll know.ââ¨â¨âGo away.ââ¨â¨You reluctantly carried the plate with you.
As you left the kitchen, you glanced back.â¨â¨Your sister had moved slightly closer to Seungmin.â¨â¨He was focused on rinsing a plate.â¨â¨You nearly stayed.
Then you caught yourself.â¨â¨It was your sister.â¨â¨Seungmin was your boyfriend.â¨â¨Nothing was going to happen because the two of them spent ninety seconds alone beside a sink.
You found your motherâs glasses on top of her head, endured several minutes of her insisting she had already checked there and returned to the kitchen.â¨â¨Your sister was speaking.â¨â¨ââŚmust get tiring.ââ¨â¨Seungmin passed her another plate. âWhat does?â
âDating someone so different from you.ââ¨â¨You stopped just outside the doorway.â¨â¨Seungmin didnât appear to notice you.â¨â¨He frowned. âYouâve said that a few times.â
âI donât mean it badly.ââ¨â¨âWhat do you mean?ââ¨â¨Your sister dried the plate slowly.â¨â¨âYouâre very disciplined. Ambitious. You take care of yourself.â
He waited.â¨â¨âAnd she isnât?ââ¨â¨âSheâs just more relaxed.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked down at the soapy water.
You knew that expression.â¨â¨He was choosing his words.â¨â¨Your sister mistook his silence for agreement.â¨â¨âIâve always been more like you,â she continued. âEven when we were younger. People used to say I was the more responsible one.â
âDid they?ââ¨â¨âAnd the more confident one.ââ¨â¨Seungmin made a small sound that could have meant anything.â¨â¨Your sister smiled.
âItâs funny, really. Most people usually notice me first.ââ¨â¨He glanced at her.â¨â¨âOkay.ââ¨â¨You pressed your lips together.
She appeared thrown by the response.â¨â¨âI donât mean to sound arrogant.ââ¨â¨âThen donât.ââ¨â¨The answer was delivered so lightly that for a second, you wondered whether you had heard him correctly.
Your sister laughed uncertainly.â¨â¨âIâm only being honest.ââ¨â¨Seungmin rinsed another plate.â¨â¨âAbout people noticing you?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âCongratulations.ââ¨â¨You had to cover your mouth.â¨â¨Your sisterâs eyes narrowed slightly.
âYou must have noticed that weâre quite different.ââ¨â¨âIâve noticed.ââ¨â¨âIâm probably more like your usual type.ââ¨â¨Seungmin finally turned off the tap.
He looked at her properly.â¨â¨âWhatâs my usual type?ââ¨â¨Your sister leaned one hip against the counter.â¨â¨âConfident. Sophisticated.â
âAre you asking me or telling me?ââ¨â¨âIâm guessing.ââ¨â¨âYouâve guessed wrong.ââ¨â¨She smiled as though he were teasing her.
âHave I?ââ¨â¨âYes.ââ¨â¨Something about his tone should have ended the conversation.â¨â¨It didnât.
Your sister lowered her voice.â¨â¨âSheâs always been the sweeter one, I suppose. Men tend to like that.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stared at her.â¨â¨Then his gaze moved past her shoulder and found you standing in the doorway.
His expression changed immediately.â¨â¨The irritation disappeared behind a slow, knowing smile.â¨â¨âHow long have you been there?â he asked.â¨â¨Your sister turned sharply.
You lifted your plate.â¨â¨âLong enough to know youâve been having a very interesting discussion about your type.ââ¨â¨Seungmin dried his hands.â¨â¨âApparently, I have one.â
âDo you?ââ¨â¨âIâm learning a lot today.ââ¨â¨Your sister straightened. âWe were only talking.ââ¨â¨âI heard.â
âThereâs no need to make it strange.ââ¨â¨You stepped into the kitchen and placed your half-finished cake on the counter.â¨â¨âI didnât.ââ¨â¨âNo, but youâre doing that thing where you act territorial.â
Seungminâs eyebrows rose.â¨â¨You laughed. âTerritorial?ââ¨â¨âYou donât need to hover every time another woman speaks to your boyfriend.ââ¨â¨âI was helping Mum.â
âAnd then you came straight back.ââ¨â¨âBecause this is where my cake is.ââ¨â¨Seungmin immediately reached for your plate.â¨â¨You slapped his hand away.
âSee?ââ¨â¨He looked wounded.â¨â¨âYou care more about that cake than you care about me.ââ¨â¨âThe cake has never stolen my crisps.â
âIt would if it could.ââ¨â¨Your sister sighed.â¨â¨âYouâre both impossible.ââ¨â¨âThank you,â Seungmin said.
You picked up your fork again.â¨â¨Your sister gave you a long look before placing the tea towel on the counter.â¨â¨âIâm going to see if Mum needs anything.ââ¨â¨âShe doesnât,â you said. âHer glasses were on her head.â
Your sister ignored you and left.â¨â¨You waited until her footsteps had faded down the hall.â¨â¨Then you turned towards Seungmin.â¨â¨He was already looking at you.
A smile pulled at your mouth.â¨â¨âYour usual type?ââ¨â¨He groaned and leaned back against the sink.â¨â¨âPlease donât.â
âConfident.ââ¨â¨âStop.ââ¨â¨âSophisticated.ââ¨â¨âIâm warning you.â
âSo much like her.ââ¨â¨Seungmin reached for you.â¨â¨You dodged around the kitchen island, laughing when he followed.â¨â¨âIâm only being honest,â you said, mimicking your sisterâs voice.
âYouâre enjoying this far too much.ââ¨â¨âApparently sheâs the woman of your dreams.ââ¨â¨âMy dreams have better conversational skills.ââ¨â¨You gasped. âThat was mean.â
âIt was accurate.ââ¨â¨He moved to one side of the island.â¨â¨You moved in the opposite direction.â¨â¨âI thought you liked confident women.â
âI like you.ââ¨â¨âThat wasnât the question.ââ¨â¨âItâs my answer.ââ¨â¨âYouâre only saying that because I caught you.â
âCaught me doing dishes?ââ¨â¨âSeductively.ââ¨â¨âI was wearing rubber gloves.ââ¨â¨âExactly. Very provocative.â
Seungmin stopped.â¨â¨You stopped too, watching him suspiciously from across the island.â¨â¨His expression softened.â¨â¨âDid that bother you?â
The question was quiet enough to dissolve some of your amusement.â¨â¨You considered it.â¨â¨âNot really.ââ¨â¨âNot really?â
âI donât think youâre secretly going to run away with my sister.ââ¨â¨âThatâs reassuring.ââ¨â¨âIâd give you at least a week before you begged me to take you back.ââ¨â¨âA week?â
âMaybe four days.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked offended. âI wouldnât make it through the first evening.ââ¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨He continued to watch you.
âBut?â he prompted.â¨â¨You looked down at your cake.â¨â¨âShe does that sometimes.ââ¨â¨âDoes what?â
âCompares us.â You scraped your fork lightly through the icing. âShe always has. She thinks sheâs being subtle.ââ¨â¨âShe isnât.ââ¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨âShe also thinks Iâm an idiot.â
You laughed. âWhy?ââ¨â¨âBecause Iâve said I like you at least twelve times today, and sheâs decided that means Iâm interested in her.ââ¨â¨âMaybe youâre sending mixed signals.ââ¨â¨âI asked her to move because she was standing on my foot.â
âVery flirtatious.ââ¨â¨âShe apologised and touched my arm.ââ¨â¨âScandalous.ââ¨â¨âSheâs touched my arm six times.â
âYou counted?ââ¨â¨âI started counting when she asked whether I thought she looked better with dark hair.ââ¨â¨You laughed again, and Seungmin smiled.â¨â¨Then he walked around the island.
This time, you let him reach you.â¨â¨His hands settled on your waist, drawing you between his knees as he leaned back against the counter.â¨â¨âFor the record,â he said, âI donât think youâre lucky.ââ¨â¨âNo?â
âNo. I think Iâm incredibly brave.ââ¨â¨You flicked his shoulder.â¨â¨He caught your wrist and kissed your palm.â¨â¨âAnd lucky,â he added.
âThat was nearly sweet.ââ¨â¨âDonât tell anyone.ââ¨â¨You rolled your eyes, but your arms slipped around his shoulders.â¨â¨He tilted his head.
âAre you sure youâre okay?ââ¨â¨âIâm fine.ââ¨â¨âYour sisterâs being strange.ââ¨â¨âShe thinks she can steal you.â
âCan she?ââ¨â¨You pretended to consider it.â¨â¨Seungmin pinched your side.â¨â¨You squealed and tried to twist away, but he trapped you against him.
âAnswer carefully,â he warned.â¨â¨âI donât know. She is very sophisticated.ââ¨â¨Another pinch.â¨â¨âAnd confident!â
He attacked your other side.â¨â¨You dissolved into helpless laughter, nearly dropping your fork as you attempted to escape.â¨â¨âSeungmin!ââ¨â¨âWrong answer.â
âSheâs your type!ââ¨â¨âTake it back.ââ¨â¨âNever!ââ¨â¨He caught both your wrists in one hand and used the other to tickle your waist.
You kicked uselessly at his legs.â¨â¨âYouâre horrible!ââ¨â¨âTake it back.ââ¨â¨âFine!â you gasped. âShe isnât your type.â
âAnd?ââ¨â¨âAnd you donât want her.ââ¨â¨âAnd?ââ¨â¨You stared at him, breathless.
His hair had fallen over his forehead during the struggle, and his smile was bright and boyish and entirely too pleased.â¨â¨âAnd youâre obsessed with me.ââ¨â¨âThere we go.ââ¨â¨He released your wrists.
You immediately smacked his chest.â¨â¨Seungmin laughed and caught you against him again, pressing a noisy kiss to your cheek before you could complain.â¨â¨âYouâre very annoying,â you told him.â¨â¨âYou were laughing.â
âAgainst my will.ââ¨â¨He kissed your other cheek.â¨â¨âStill counts.ââ¨â¨Footsteps sounded in the hallway.
You both separated just before your mother entered the kitchen.â¨â¨She looked at Seungminâs messy hair, your flushed face and the abandoned washing-up.â¨â¨Neither of you spoke.â¨â¨Your mother sighed.
âThe dishes, Seungmin.ââ¨â¨âI was doing them.ââ¨â¨âHe attacked me,â you said.â¨â¨âYou provoked me.â
Your mother pointed at the sink.â¨â¨âBoth of you.ââ¨â¨âYes, Mum,â you said.â¨â¨âYes, Mum,â Seungmin echoed.
You turned to glare at him.â¨â¨He smiled innocently.â¨â¨Your mother left the room shaking her head.â¨â¨Seungmin bumped his hip against yours as he turned the tap back on.
âPass me the sponge.ââ¨â¨âYou pass me the sponge.ââ¨â¨âItâs closer to you.ââ¨â¨âYouâre closer to the sink.â
He looked towards the doorway, then lowered his voice.â¨â¨âDo you think your sister would do it for me?ââ¨â¨You stared at him.â¨â¨He managed to hold a serious expression for approximately two seconds.
Then you shoved the sponge directly into his chest.
๨ŕ§
When you finally prepared to leave, your mother packed enough food for several days into a bag and made Seungmin promise to visit again soon.â¨â¨Your sister stood in the hallway while you put on your coat.â¨â¨âYouâre leaving already?â she asked.â¨â¨âWeâve been here for five hours,â you said.
âIt doesnât feel that long.ââ¨â¨Seungmin bent to tie his shoelace.â¨â¨Your sisterâs gaze lingered on him.â¨â¨âYou should come over more often.â
âWe will,â you replied.â¨â¨âI meant Seungmin.ââ¨â¨He looked up.â¨â¨Your sister smiled. âYou donât need to wait for her. Youâre practically part of the family now.â
There it was.â¨â¨Not quite enough to confront.â¨â¨More than enough to notice.â¨â¨Seungmin straightened.
âI think sheâd be upset if I visited without her.ââ¨â¨âI wouldnât,â you said. âIâd enjoy the peace.ââ¨â¨He placed one hand on top of your head and pushed down lightly.â¨â¨Your sister laughed.
âYouâre very patient with her.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked at you.â¨â¨âNo,â he said. âSheâs patient with me.ââ¨â¨For once, there was no joke attached.
His hand slid from the top of your head to the back of your neck, thumb brushing softly beneath your hair.â¨â¨Your sisterâs smile faded for half a second.â¨â¨Then it returned.â¨â¨âWell,â she said, opening the door, âit was lovely seeing you.â
âYou too,â Seungmin replied politely.â¨â¨She hugged you first.â¨â¨It was brief.â¨â¨Then she turned towards Seungmin.
You expected her to offer a wave.â¨â¨Instead, she wrapped her arms around him.â¨â¨Seungmin froze.â¨â¨His hands hovered uncertainly beside her shoulders.
Your eyes widened.â¨â¨Over your sisterâs head, his gaze found yours.â¨â¨His expression was so openly alarmed that a laugh burst out of you.â¨â¨Your sister released him.
âWhatâs funny?ââ¨â¨âNothing.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stepped immediately towards you.â¨â¨You were still laughing as he took the bag of food from your hand and placed his other arm securely around your shoulders.
Your sister glanced between you.â¨â¨âText me when youâre home.ââ¨â¨âI will.ââ¨â¨She looked at Seungmin. âYou have my number, donât you?â
âNo,â he said.â¨â¨âOh.â She paused. âI thought you did.ââ¨â¨âWhy would he?â you asked.â¨â¨âIn case of an emergency.â
Seungmin nodded. âIâll call emergency services.ââ¨â¨You choked on another laugh.â¨â¨Your sisterâs mouth tightened.â¨â¨âI only meant if something happened with you.â
âHe has Mumâs number.ââ¨â¨âAnd her Dadâs,â Seungmin added.â¨â¨âAnd Chanâs,â you said.â¨â¨âAnd Minhoâs.â
âHe doesnât need your number.ââ¨â¨Your sister folded her arms.â¨â¨âYou make everything sound strange.ââ¨â¨âYou asked my boyfriend whether he had your number.â
âFor emergencies.ââ¨â¨âRight.ââ¨â¨Seungmin gently steered you through the doorway before either of you could continue.â¨â¨âThank you for lunch,â he called politely.
Your mother called goodbye from somewhere inside the house.â¨â¨Your sister remained at the door while the two of you walked down the path.â¨â¨You could feel her watching.â¨â¨Seungminâs arm stayed around you until you reached the pavement.
Then he leaned close.â¨â¨âDonât look now.ââ¨â¨You immediately looked back.â¨â¨Your sister was still standing in the doorway.
She lifted her hand when she saw you turn.â¨â¨You waved.â¨â¨Seungmin sighed.â¨â¨âI specifically said not to.â
âI donât take instructions well.ââ¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨The door finally closed.â¨â¨You walked several more steps in silence.
Then Seungmin said, âYour sister wants me.ââ¨â¨You stopped.â¨â¨He stopped beside you.â¨â¨The solemn expression on his face lasted less than a second before you both started laughing.
âYour confidence is disgusting,â you told him.
๨ŕ§
Your sister arrived at your flat on Saturday afternoon wearing heeled boots, a fitted coat and enough perfume to announce her presence before you had even opened the door.â¨â¨You looked at her.â¨â¨Then at the small handbag hanging from her shoulder.â¨â¨Then back at her.
âYou said you were coming to borrow my straighteners.ââ¨â¨âI am.ââ¨â¨âAre you planning to straighten your hair here?ââ¨â¨âNo.â
âThen why do you look like youâre going somewhere?ââ¨â¨She frowned. âIâm meeting someone later.ââ¨â¨âYou didnât mention that.ââ¨â¨âI didnât realise I needed to submit an itinerary.â
âYou donât.ââ¨â¨âThen why are you interrogating me?ââ¨â¨âI asked one question.ââ¨â¨âYou asked three.â
You stepped aside to let her enter.â¨â¨She walked past you, removing her coat as she went.â¨â¨The outfit beneath it was somehow even more carefully chosen.â¨â¨You watched her smooth the fabric over her waist before checking her reflection in the hallway mirror.
Interesting.â¨â¨Very interesting.â¨â¨âYou could have texted,â you said, closing the door. âI wouldâve brought the straighteners to Mumâs tomorrow.ââ¨â¨âI was nearby.â
She wasnât.â¨â¨Your sister lived nearly forty minutes in the opposite direction.â¨â¨You decided not to point that out.â¨â¨From the living room, Seungmin called, âWho is it?â
Your sisterâs posture changed almost imperceptibly.â¨â¨Her shoulders pulled back.â¨â¨Her expression softened.â¨â¨You stared at her.
She ignored you.â¨â¨âYour favourite person,â you called.â¨â¨There was a pause.â¨â¨Then Seungmin replied, âFelix?â
You gasped.â¨â¨Your sister laughed.â¨â¨You marched into the living room, already preparing several punishments.â¨â¨Seungmin was sitting cross-legged on the floor beside the coffee table.
A pale blue fabric headband held his hair away from his face, and there was a thin layer of clay mask drying across his cheeks because you had told him his skin looked tired.â¨â¨He had complained for eleven minutes.â¨â¨Then he had asked whether there was enough left for his forehead.â¨â¨Your left hand rested carefully on top of an old magazine while Seungmin held your right between both of his.
Three of your fingernails were painted.â¨â¨One was half-painted.â¨â¨The fifth had somehow acquired a streak of polish across your skin.â¨â¨Seungmin looked up as you entered.
The smile on his face widened.â¨â¨âThereâs my second-favourite person.ââ¨â¨You stopped in front of him.â¨â¨âSecond?â
âFelix bakes for me.ââ¨â¨âI cook for you.ââ¨â¨âYou once burned instant noodles.ââ¨â¨âThe packet was confusing.â
âYou forgot the water.ââ¨â¨âIt didnât say when to add it.ââ¨â¨You placed one foot against his thigh and pushed lightly.â¨â¨Seungmin caught your ankle.
âNo kicking near the nail polish.ââ¨â¨âYou deserve worse.ââ¨â¨âYou asked me to do this.ââ¨â¨âAnd youâre doing a terrible job.â
He looked down at your nails.â¨â¨âTheyâre beautiful.ââ¨â¨âThereâs polish on my knuckle.ââ¨â¨Your sister appeared behind you.
Seungmin glanced towards her.â¨â¨His expression flickered with surprise before settling into a pleasant smile.â¨â¨âOh. Hi.ââ¨â¨âHi.â
Your sister looked him over.â¨â¨Her gaze paused at the headband.â¨â¨Then the face mask.â¨â¨Then your hand resting in his.
Her smile faltered, only slightly.â¨â¨âI didnât know you were here.ââ¨â¨You turned your head towards her.â¨â¨She knew.
You had mentioned it the previous evening when she asked what you were doing this weekend.â¨â¨Seungmin did not appear to remember that.â¨â¨âI live here sometimes,â he said.â¨â¨âYou donât,â you replied.
Your sister moved further into the room.â¨â¨âYou look comfortable,â she said.â¨â¨Seungmin touched the edge of the headband.â¨â¨âThis was forced on me.â
âYou asked whether the bow should go in the middle,â you said.â¨â¨Your sister laughed, lowering herself onto the sofa behind him.â¨â¨âIt suits you.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked up at her.
âThe face mask?ââ¨â¨âThe headband.ââ¨â¨He touched it again.â¨â¨âThanks.â
Her smile brightened.â¨â¨You watched her tuck one leg elegantly over the other.â¨â¨Seungmin returned his attention to your hand.â¨â¨âStop moving.â
âIâm not moving.ââ¨â¨âYouâre moving now.ââ¨â¨âBecause you told me not to.ââ¨â¨He tightened his fingers around yours.
âIf you smudge this one, Iâm starting again.ââ¨â¨âYouâve already smudged it.ââ¨â¨âThat was intentional.ââ¨â¨âWas the polish on my skin intentional too?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âWhat was the artistic vision?ââ¨â¨âAnnoying you.ââ¨â¨You tried to pull your hand away.
Seungmin held on.â¨â¨âStay still.ââ¨â¨âYouâre enjoying the authority.ââ¨â¨âI rarely have any in this relationship.â
âBecause you canât be trusted.ââ¨â¨Your sister leaned forwards.â¨â¨âYou let him paint your nails?ââ¨â¨You looked at her.
âHe volunteered.ââ¨â¨âI was coerced,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âYou said you could do it better than me.ââ¨â¨âI can.â
You lifted your hand.â¨â¨He immediately lowered it again before the wet polish could run.â¨â¨âThat remains to be seen.ââ¨â¨Your sister tilted her head.
âIâd never ask my boyfriend to do something like that.ââ¨â¨You glanced at Seungmin.â¨â¨He glanced at you.â¨â¨There it was again.
That tiny shared pause when both of you noticed something and decided, without speaking, whether it was worth reacting to.â¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨âGood thing he isnât your boyfriend, then.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs expression tightened.
Only for a second.â¨â¨Then she laughed.â¨â¨âI only mean Iâd feel bad making him do something so feminine.ââ¨â¨Seungmin inspected your thumbnail.
âYou think painting nails is feminine?ââ¨â¨âUsually.ââ¨â¨âThen Iâm doing a very poor job of it.ââ¨â¨You snorted.
He blew gently across your nail.â¨â¨Your sister watched his lips purse.â¨â¨âItâs sweet,â she said. âI just wouldnât have expected it from you.ââ¨â¨âWhat did you expect?â Seungmin asked.
âI donât know.ââ¨â¨She did know.â¨â¨You could tell by the way she leaned towards him.â¨â¨âSomething more masculine, I suppose.â
Seungmin looked down at himself.â¨â¨He was wearing grey jogging bottoms, an old sweatshirt and your fluffy skincare headband.â¨â¨âIâm devastated.ââ¨â¨âYou know what I mean.â
âI really donât.ââ¨â¨She smiled as though he were deliberately teasing her.â¨â¨âYou seem like someone whoâd usually want a very feminine girlfriend.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs brush paused.
You looked at your sister.â¨â¨She was looking at him.â¨â¨Not you.â¨â¨He lifted his eyes slowly.
âI do.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs smile widened.â¨â¨Then Seungmin returned his attention to your hand.â¨â¨âThatâs why Iâm dating her.â
You pressed your lips together.â¨â¨Your sister glanced at you.â¨â¨You smiled pleasantly.â¨â¨Seungmin dipped the brush into the polish.
âShe isnât exactly what most people would call feminine,â your sister said.â¨â¨You raised your eyebrows.â¨â¨Seungminâs hand stopped again.â¨â¨Your sister gestured towards you.
You were wearing one of Seungminâs old shirts, a pair of shorts and fluffy socks. Your hair was twisted into a loose knot that had begun collapsing an hour ago.â¨â¨There was a faint smudge of clay mask beside your jaw where you had attempted to kiss Seungmin before it dried.â¨â¨You looked extremely comfortable.â¨â¨That had apparently become a flaw.
âIâm not?â you asked.â¨â¨âI didnât mean it badly.ââ¨â¨âOf course not.ââ¨â¨âYouâve never cared about being girly.â
âIâm getting my nails painted.ââ¨â¨âBy your boyfriend.ââ¨â¨âYes.ââ¨â¨âSo?â
âSo that feels relevant.ââ¨â¨Your sister rolled her eyes.â¨â¨âYou know what I mean. Youâre not someone who gets dressed up around the house or worries about always looking attractive.ââ¨â¨You looked down at yourself.
Then at Seungmin.â¨â¨His gaze had settled on your face.â¨â¨You recognised the slight narrowing of his eyes.â¨â¨Not anger.
Not yet.â¨â¨Attention.â¨â¨Your sister continued, âI just think itâs brave.ââ¨â¨âBrave?â you repeated.
âTo be that comfortable so early in a relationship.ââ¨â¨You and Seungmin had been together for nearly two years.â¨â¨Apparently that remained early enough to maintain a constant state of glamour.â¨â¨âHow does she normally dress at home?â Seungmin asked.
Your sister seemed pleased to have his attention again.â¨â¨âLike this.ââ¨â¨âRight.ââ¨â¨âSheâs always been a little careless.â
âWith clothes?ââ¨â¨âWith everything.ââ¨â¨You laughed quietly.â¨â¨Your sister looked at you.
âWhat?ââ¨â¨âNothing.ââ¨â¨Seungmin placed the nail brush carefully inside the bottle.â¨â¨Then he lifted your hand and examined his work.
âPerfect.ââ¨â¨âItâs uneven.ââ¨â¨âSo are your fingers.ââ¨â¨âMy fingers arenât uneven.â
âOneâs shorter.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre supposed to be different lengths.ââ¨â¨âConvenient excuse.ââ¨â¨He brought your hand towards his mouth.
You frowned.â¨â¨âWhat are you doing?ââ¨â¨âChecking whether itâs dry.ââ¨â¨âWith your lips?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âThat makes no sense.ââ¨â¨Seungmin pressed a delicate kiss to the side of your index finger, avoiding the wet nail.â¨â¨Then he kissed your knuckle.
Then your wrist.â¨â¨A smile pulled at your mouth despite yourself.â¨â¨âDry,â he announced.â¨â¨âYou didnât touch the polish.â
âIâm an expert.ââ¨â¨âYouâre an idiot.ââ¨â¨He kissed your wrist again.â¨â¨Your sister shifted on the sofa.
âYou two are veryâŚâ She paused. âAffectionate.ââ¨â¨âThat sounded judgemental,â you said.â¨â¨âIt wasnât.ââ¨â¨âIt sounded a little judgemental,â Seungmin agreed.
âI only mean you donât seem like the clingy type.ââ¨â¨She was speaking to him again.â¨â¨Seungmin leaned back against your legs.â¨â¨âIâm not.â
You looked down at him.â¨â¨He looked up at you.â¨â¨âYouâre currently using me as a chair.ââ¨â¨âYouâre comfortable.â
Seungmin smiled lazily, reaching behind himself until his hand found your knee.â¨â¨You threaded your fingers through his hair, careful not to disturb the headband.â¨â¨He immediately tilted his head into your touch.â¨â¨Your sister watched him do it.
Something in her expression hardened.â¨â¨âYou always liked being fussed over,â she said to you.â¨â¨You looked at her.â¨â¨âWhat?â
âWhen we were younger. You always needed everyoneâs attention.ââ¨â¨The comment was casual.â¨â¨Almost playful.â¨â¨You knew better.
âI donât remember that.ââ¨â¨âYou used to follow Mum around constantly.ââ¨â¨âI was six.ââ¨â¨âYou cried whenever she left the room.â
âI was still six.ââ¨â¨âYouâve never liked being alone.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs thumb stroked once over your knee.â¨â¨You shrugged.
âGood thing I donât have to be.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs eyes flicked towards his hand.â¨â¨âThatâs what I mean. You need a lot from people.ââ¨â¨There was a quietness beneath the words.
An implication she wanted Seungmin to catch.â¨â¨You were needy.â¨â¨Difficult.â¨â¨Exhausting.
The kind of girlfriend who demanded face masks and painted nails and constant affection.â¨â¨Your sister, naturally, would never require so much effort.â¨â¨Seungmin looked up at you.â¨â¨âDo you?â
âDo I what?ââ¨â¨âNeed a lot from me?ââ¨â¨You pretended to consider it.â¨â¨âWell, you could make more tea.â
âI made the last one.ââ¨â¨âYou drank half of it.ââ¨â¨âIt became ours when you let me taste it.ââ¨â¨âThatâs not how sharing works.â
Your sister exhaled through her nose.â¨â¨âYou make everything into a joke.ââ¨â¨âYou make everything very serious,â you replied.â¨â¨âIâm trying to have a conversation.â
âWith my boyfriend?ââ¨â¨âWith both of you.ââ¨â¨âYouâve mostly been looking at him.ââ¨â¨The room went still.
Your sister blinked.â¨â¨Seungminâs eyebrows lifted.â¨â¨You hadnât intended to say it quite so plainly.â¨â¨You werenât upset.
Not yet.â¨â¨You were mostly curious to see what she would do when someone acknowledged the obvious.â¨â¨She recovered quickly.â¨â¨âIâm looking at whoeverâs speaking.â
âHe hasnât been speaking.ââ¨â¨âHe literally just was.ââ¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨âAll right.â
Your sister folded her arms.â¨â¨âYouâre being strange again.ââ¨â¨âI didnât say anything.ââ¨â¨âYou implied something.â
âWhat did I imply?ââ¨â¨âYou know exactly what.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs hand slid around the back of your knee.â¨â¨His fingertips squeezed gently.
You looked down at him.â¨â¨He gave you a small, private smile.â¨â¨There was no concern in it.â¨â¨He knew you werenât jealous.
Mostly, he appeared entertained.â¨â¨âYou came for straighteners,â you reminded your sister.â¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre in the bedroom.â
âCan you get them?ââ¨â¨âYou know where they are.ââ¨â¨She hesitated.â¨â¨Her gaze moved towards the hallway, then back to Seungmin.
âI havenât been in your bedroom since you moved things around.ââ¨â¨âYouâll survive.ââ¨â¨âI donât want to go through your things.ââ¨â¨âYouâve never had an issue before.â
Her mouth tightened.â¨â¨You smiled sweetly.â¨â¨âIâll show you.ââ¨â¨You gently extracted your hand from Seungminâs grasp, holding your fingers carefully apart.
He immediately caught your wrist.â¨â¨âWhere are you going?ââ¨â¨âTo get the straighteners.ââ¨â¨âYouâll ruin your nails.â
âIâm walking, not digging a tunnel.ââ¨â¨âYouâre very clumsy.ââ¨â¨âYou painted them five minutes ago. Theyâre dry.ââ¨â¨Seungmin tightened his grip.
âWait.ââ¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨He reached for the bottle of top coat on the table.â¨â¨âYou need this.â
âYou didnât mention top coat before.ââ¨â¨âI forgot.ââ¨â¨âYou just donât want me to leave.ââ¨â¨âThatâs ridiculous.â
âYouâre holding my wrist.ââ¨â¨âTo protect my work.ââ¨â¨âSay youâll miss me.ââ¨â¨âYouâll be gone for thirty seconds.â
âThen it shouldnât be difficult.ââ¨â¨Seungmin narrowed his eyes.â¨â¨Your sister watched the exchange.â¨â¨You waited.
He looked away first.â¨â¨âIâll miss you,â he muttered.â¨â¨You grinned.â¨â¨âWhat was that?â
âYou heard me.ââ¨â¨âI donât think I did.ââ¨â¨âIâm not repeating it.ââ¨â¨âThen I suppose Iâll have to stay.â
Seungmin looked back at you suspiciously.â¨â¨You lowered yourself onto the floor in front of him.â¨â¨His expression brightened.â¨â¨Then you reached for the top coat.
He held it out of reach.â¨â¨âYou said you were staying.ââ¨â¨âTo do my own nails.ââ¨â¨âNo.â
âGive it to me.ââ¨â¨âYouâll ruin them.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre already ruined.ââ¨â¨Seungmin gasped.
You grabbed for the bottle.â¨â¨He leaned away.â¨â¨You lunged across him, careful to keep your painted hand lifted.â¨â¨Seungmin caught you around the waist with his free arm.
âBehave.ââ¨â¨âGive it.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âSeungmin.â
You tried to reach behind him.â¨â¨He shifted again, pulling you further into his lap.â¨â¨Your sister cleared her throat.â¨â¨You both looked towards her.
She was still sitting on the sofa.â¨â¨Watching.â¨â¨You had briefly forgotten she was there.â¨â¨âSorry,â you said, although you werenât particularly sorry.
Seungmin rested his chin on your shoulder.â¨â¨He still had one arm wrapped firmly around your waist.â¨â¨Your sisterâs gaze dropped to it.â¨â¨âCould you get the straighteners?â she asked.
âYou know where they are,â you repeated.â¨â¨âI already told you I donât.ââ¨â¨Seungmin lifted his head.â¨â¨âI can get them.â
Your sisterâs face brightened.â¨â¨You turned towards him.â¨â¨He was already beginning to stand, carefully guiding you off his lap.â¨â¨Your sister rose too.
Seungmin paused.â¨â¨He looked at her.â¨â¨Then at you.â¨â¨You pressed your lips together to keep from laughing.
There was no reason for both of them to go.â¨â¨Your sister apparently believed your bedroom contained an unusually complicated straightener-storage system that required Seungminâs personal guidance.â¨â¨âI know where they are,â he said.â¨â¨âIâll come with you.â
âYou can stay here.ââ¨â¨Her smile faltered.â¨â¨âI donât mind.ââ¨â¨âI do.â
The answer was so immediate that you made a small choking sound.â¨â¨Your sisterâs patience finally snapped.â¨â¨âCan someone please get them?ââ¨â¨You and Seungmin both looked at her.
She smiled tightly.â¨â¨âThe straighteners.ââ¨â¨âRight,â you said.â¨â¨Seungmin pointed at you.
âDonât touch anything.ââ¨â¨âItâs my flat.ââ¨â¨âMy nail polish.ââ¨â¨He disappeared down the hallway.
Your sister waited until he was out of earshot.â¨â¨Then she looked at you.â¨â¨âYou donât have to perform every time Iâm here.ââ¨â¨You stared at her.
âPerform?ââ¨â¨âThe constant touching. The little jokes.ââ¨â¨âYou think thatâs for you?ââ¨â¨âI think youâre trying very hard to prove something.â
You looked towards the hallway.â¨â¨Seungmin was rummaging through the bathroom cabinet, apparently having forgotten that you kept the straighteners inside your wardrobe.â¨â¨You turned back to her.â¨â¨âIâm sitting in my own living room wearing his shirt while he paints my nails.â
âExactly.ââ¨â¨âWhat am I proving?ââ¨â¨âThat youâre comfortable with him.ââ¨â¨âI am comfortable with him.â
âYou donât need to make it so obvious.ââ¨â¨A laugh escaped you.â¨â¨Your sisterâs expression darkened.â¨â¨âWhat?â
âI genuinely donât understand what youâre accusing me of.ââ¨â¨âYouâre acting territorial.ââ¨â¨âI havenât stopped you speaking to him.ââ¨â¨âYou donât have to. You just keep interrupting.â
âThis is my flat.ââ¨â¨âSo?ââ¨â¨âHeâs my boyfriend.ââ¨â¨âI know that.â
âDo you?ââ¨â¨Her eyes narrowed.â¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨Still amused.
Mostly.â¨â¨But something sharper had begun pressing beneath your ribs.â¨â¨Your sister had always competed with you.â¨â¨Clothes. Friends. Attention. Compliments.
Anything you possessed became evidence that she deserved something better.â¨â¨You had simply never expected her to become this obvious.â¨â¨âYouâre imagining things,â she said.â¨â¨âAm I?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âThen why did you come dressed like that to borrow straighteners?ââ¨â¨Her face changed.â¨â¨Only for an instant.
Then she scoffed.â¨â¨âI told you Iâm going out.ââ¨â¨âWhere?ââ¨â¨âWhy do you care?â
âI donât.ââ¨â¨âYou clearly do.ââ¨â¨âYouâve travelled forty minutes to borrow something you could buy for twenty pounds.ââ¨â¨âI was nearby.â
âNo, you werenât.ââ¨â¨She folded her arms.â¨â¨âSeungmin doesnât seem to mind me being here.ââ¨â¨There it was.
You looked at her.â¨â¨She looked pleased with herself.â¨â¨âWhy would he mind?ââ¨â¨âHeâs been friendly.â
âHeâs usually friendly.ââ¨â¨âNot with everyone.ââ¨â¨You nearly smiled.â¨â¨Your sister had known Seungmin for one afternoon.
Apparently she had already developed an extensive understanding of his social habits.â¨â¨âHe complimented me last time,â she continued.â¨â¨âWhen?ââ¨â¨âHe said my dress was nice.â
âMum told him to.ââ¨â¨âThat doesnât mean he didnât think it.ââ¨â¨âNo, Iâm sure he has very strong feelings about the dress.ââ¨â¨âYou donât have to be jealous.â
You stared at her.â¨â¨Then you laughed.â¨â¨You couldnât help it.â¨â¨The idea was so completely detached from reality that amusement overwhelmed everything else.
Your sisterâs face hardened.â¨â¨âIâm serious.ââ¨â¨âSo am I.ââ¨â¨âThen why are you laughing?â
âBecause you think Seungmin complimenting your dress means I should be worried.ââ¨â¨âI didnât say you should be worried.ââ¨â¨âYou said I was jealous.ââ¨â¨âYouâre acting like it.â
âTrust me.â You leaned back against the sofa. âIâm not.ââ¨â¨Your sister opened her mouth.â¨â¨Seungmin returned before she could answer.â¨â¨He was holding the straighteners in one hand
He handed the straighteners to your sister.â¨â¨She accepted them.â¨â¨âThank you.ââ¨â¨âNo problem.â
Her fingers lingered against his for a moment.â¨â¨Seungmin looked down at their hands.â¨â¨Then politely extracted his own.â¨â¨âI should probably go,â your sister said.
You looked at the clock.â¨â¨She had been there for less than twenty minutes.â¨â¨âYour plans?â you asked.â¨â¨âYes.â
She picked up her coat.â¨â¨Seungmin returned to the floor beside you, already reaching for your hand.â¨â¨Your sister watched him pull you down beside him.â¨â¨Your sister opened the front door.
âIâll text you,â she said to you.â¨â¨âOkay.ââ¨â¨She looked towards Seungmin.â¨â¨âIt was nice seeing you.â
âYou too.ââ¨â¨âYou look good, by the way.ââ¨â¨Seungmin glanced down at his sweatshirt.â¨â¨âThanks.â
âThe headband especially.ââ¨â¨His hand rose to the blue bow.â¨â¨âRight.ââ¨â¨She laughed softly.
Then she left.â¨â¨You waited until the door closed.â¨â¨Silence settled over the flat.â¨â¨Seungmin stared at it.
You stared at him.â¨â¨He turned slowly.â¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨You broke first.
Laughter burst out of you so suddenly that you nearly knocked over the nail polish.â¨â¨Seungmin caught the bottle.â¨â¨âCareful!ââ¨â¨âThe headband especially,â you repeated.
âStop.ââ¨â¨âYou look good, by the way.ââ¨â¨âI said stop.ââ¨â¨You twisted in his arms until you were facing him.
Seungmin was kneeling over you, one hand planted beside your shoulder and the other wrapped securely around your waist.â¨â¨You looked up at him.â¨â¨âI like your headband.ââ¨â¨âThank you. I already have a beautiful girlfriend.â
You nodded.â¨â¨âVery natural.ââ¨â¨âYouâre ridiculous.ââ¨â¨âAnd youâre obsessed with me.â
âThere it is.ââ¨â¨âThere what is?ââ¨â¨âYouâve been waiting to say that all afternoon.ââ¨â¨âI havenât.â
âYou have.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âYes.ââ¨â¨You tried to push him away with your forearm.
Seungmin remained exactly where he was.â¨â¨âAdmit it,â he said.â¨â¨âAdmit what?ââ¨â¨âThat youâre jealous.â
âIâm not.ââ¨â¨âJust a little?ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âNot even when she touched my hand?â
âI thought about breaking her fingers.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs eyes widened.â¨â¨You hooked one leg around his hips and attempted to roll him onto his back.â¨â¨He anticipated it, shifting his weight before you could gain any leverage.
âYouâre cheating,â you complained.â¨â¨âHow?ââ¨â¨âYouâre stronger.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât cheating.â
âIt is when Iâm losing.ââ¨â¨He laughed.â¨â¨You used the distraction to push at his shoulder again.â¨â¨Seungmin caught both your wrists.
Your breath hitched, more from surprise than anything else.â¨â¨He pinned them lightly above your head, careful not to let your nails touch the carpet.â¨â¨His hair had begun slipping free from the headband.â¨â¨The clay mask had cracked faintly near the corners of his smile.
He looked completely ridiculous.â¨â¨And unfairly lovely.â¨â¨âStill think I enjoyed it?â he asked.â¨â¨You pretended to consider your answer.
His eyes narrowed.â¨â¨âChoose carefully.ââ¨â¨You bit back a smile.â¨â¨âShe is very feminine.â
Seungmin lowered his face closer to yours.â¨â¨âWrong direction.ââ¨â¨âAnd confident.ââ¨â¨His grip tightened slightly around your wrists.
You laughed.â¨â¨âAnd sophisticated.ââ¨â¨âDo you want to keep your newly painted nails?ââ¨â¨âThat sounds like a threat.â
âIt is.ââ¨â¨âYou worked so hard on them.ââ¨â¨âI can start again.ââ¨â¨âYou wouldnât.â
âI have nowhere to be.ââ¨â¨You squirmed beneath him.â¨â¨He shifted, trapping you more securely without putting his weight on you.â¨â¨âYouâre impossible,â you said.
âYou started this.ââ¨â¨âSheâs your type.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stared at you.â¨â¨Then he released one of your wrists.
You immediately tried to escape.â¨â¨His free hand found your side.â¨â¨You squealed.â¨â¨âNo!â
âTake it back.ââ¨â¨âYou canât keep doing this!ââ¨â¨âI can until you learn.ââ¨â¨His fingers dug gently into your waist.
You dissolved into laughter, twisting helplessly beneath him.â¨â¨âThe mask!â you gasped. âYouâll crack the mask!ââ¨â¨âI donât care.ââ¨â¨âYou were worried about it two minutes ago!â
âYouâve pushed me too far.ââ¨â¨You kicked at the rug.â¨â¨Seungmin caught your leg beneath his knee.â¨â¨âYouâre evil!â
âAnd?ââ¨â¨âControlling!ââ¨â¨âAnd?ââ¨â¨âObsessed with me!â
His fingers stopped.â¨â¨âThere we go.ââ¨â¨You glared up at him, breathless.â¨â¨âThat isnât fair.â
âItâs completely fair.ââ¨â¨âI was supposed to say you donât want her.ââ¨â¨âI know I donât want her.ââ¨â¨âYouâre supposed to reassure me.â
âAre you worried?ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âThen why do you need reassurance?ââ¨â¨âBecause I enjoy compliments.â
Seungmin smiled.â¨â¨The teasing faded gently from his expression.â¨â¨He released your other wrist and settled his hand beside your head instead.â¨â¨âYouâre very pretty.â
âThat was basic.ââ¨â¨âYouâre especially pretty when youâre wearing my clothes.ââ¨â¨âBetter.ââ¨â¨âYouâre funny.â
âI know.ââ¨â¨âAnd irritating.ââ¨â¨âThat wasnât a compliment.ââ¨â¨âItâs one of my favourite things about you.â
You looked up at him.â¨â¨His thumb brushed lightly over your cheek.â¨â¨âYouâre my favourite person to come home to,â he continued. âMy favourite person to annoy. My favourite person to do absolutely nothing with.ââ¨â¨Your smile softened.
Seungminâs did too.â¨â¨âAnd,â he added, âIâm so obsessed with you that I let you put this stupid thing on my head.ââ¨â¨You touched the bow.â¨â¨âYou love the headband.â
âI tolerate it.ââ¨â¨âYouâre avoiding the important part.ââ¨â¨âWhat important part?ââ¨â¨âThe part where you admit Iâm obsessed with you.â
You laughed.â¨â¨âYou just admitted it yourself.ââ¨â¨âI want to hear you say it.ââ¨â¨âYouâre obsessed with me.â
âAnd?ââ¨â¨You stared at him.â¨â¨He waited expectantly.â¨â¨âAnd you donât want my sister.â
âObviously.ââ¨â¨âAnd?ââ¨â¨A slow grin spread across his face.â¨â¨You realised what he wanted.
âNo.ââ¨â¨âSay it.ââ¨â¨âIâm not saying it.ââ¨â¨âYou know you want to.â
âI donât.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs fingers hovered threateningly near your waist.â¨â¨You recoiled.â¨â¨âDonât.â
âThen say it.ââ¨â¨âYouâre abusing your power.ââ¨â¨âIâm waiting.ââ¨â¨You glared at him.
He looked delighted.â¨â¨âAnd Iâm obsessed with you too,â you muttered.â¨â¨âWhat was that?ââ¨â¨âYou heard me.â
âThe face mask is restricting my hearing.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât how masks work.ââ¨â¨âSpeak clearly.ââ¨â¨You tried not to smile.
âIâm obsessed with you too.ââ¨â¨âThere we go.ââ¨â¨He bent and kissed you.â¨â¨It began soft.
A pleased little press of his lips against yours.â¨â¨Then you reached for the back of his neck and accidentally brushed one wet nail against his cheek.â¨â¨Seungmin pulled away.â¨â¨You froze.
A bright streak of polish now cut through the dried clay mask.â¨â¨For one second, neither of you moved.â¨â¨Then you burst out laughing.â¨â¨Seungmin stared at you.
âYou ruined it.ââ¨â¨âIâm sorry!ââ¨â¨âYou did that on purpose.ââ¨â¨âI didnât!â
âYou attacked me.ââ¨â¨âYou were on top of me!ââ¨â¨âBecause you accused me of wanting your sister.ââ¨â¨Seungmin touched his cheek.
His fingers came away with polish on them.â¨â¨His mouth dropped open.â¨â¨You laughed even harder.â¨â¨âYou look beautiful.â
âYouâre sleeping on the sofa.ââ¨â¨âItâs my flat.ââ¨â¨âThen Iâm sleeping in your bed alone.ââ¨â¨âYou wouldnât last ten minutes.â
âIâd sleep perfectly.ââ¨â¨You grinned.â¨â¨Seungmin tried to maintain his glare.â¨â¨He failed.
A laugh escaped him.â¨â¨Then another.â¨â¨He lowered his head until his forehead rested against your shoulder, both of you shaking with laughter on the living-room floor.â¨â¨You wrapped your arms around him.
âYour mask really is ruined.ââ¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨âAnd the polish is definitely smudged.ââ¨â¨âI know.â
๨ŕ§
Your sister invited herself shopping with you three days later.â¨â¨Technically, she asked whether you had bought your mumâs birthday present yet. When you told her that you and Seungmin were going into town on Sunday to find something, she replied that she had been planning to go that day too.â¨â¨You had stared at the message for several seconds.â¨â¨Seungmin, lying beside you with his head on your stomach, had tilted his phone away from his face and asked, âWhy are you making that expression?â
âMy sister wants to come shopping with us.ââ¨â¨He had gone silent.â¨â¨You lowered your phone to look at him. âThat was a very long pause.ââ¨â¨âI was trying to think of something polite.â
âAnd?ââ¨â¨âI couldnât.ââ¨â¨You laughed and ran your fingers through his hair. âWe are shopping for her mum too.ââ¨â¨âUnfortunately.â
âSheâs my mum.ââ¨â¨âThatâs why I said unfortunately. I like your mum.ââ¨â¨âYouâre horrible.ââ¨â¨Seungmin had turned his head and pressed a kiss to your stomach through your shirt. âTell her she can come.â
âYou donât sound very enthusiastic.ââ¨â¨âIâm thrilled. Maybe she can tell me more about what kind of woman I usually prefer.ââ¨â¨You had flicked his forehead.â¨â¨He had bitten your finger.
The matter was settled.
๨ŕ§
Your sister arrived twenty minutes late.â¨â¨You and Seungmin had already been standing outside the shopping centre long enough for him to complain about the cold four times, steal one of your gloves and attempt to warm his other hand by shoving it beneath the back of your jumper.â¨â¨You had slapped him away.â¨â¨He had waited thirty seconds before trying again.
âYour hand is freezing,â you complained, twisting out of his reach.â¨â¨âThatâs why I need your body heat.ââ¨â¨âYou have pockets.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre not as warm as you.â
âThey donât want you touching them either.ââ¨â¨Seungmin smiled and caught the belt loop of your jeans when you tried to step away. âCome back.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âYouâre abandoning me.â
âIâm moving half a metre.ââ¨â¨âThatâs still too far.ââ¨â¨You rolled your eyes, but you let him pull you backwards until your shoulder rested against his chest. He wrapped both arms around your waist and tucked his chin over your shoulder, immediately pleased with himself.â¨â¨âYouâre very clingy today,â you said.
âItâs cold.ââ¨â¨âYou were clingy yesterday too.ââ¨â¨âI was tired.ââ¨â¨âYou fell asleep on top of me. I couldnât breathe.â
âAnd yet you let me stay.â His laugh warmed the side of your neck.â¨â¨Your sister found you like that.â¨â¨She slowed as she approached, taking in Seungminâs arms around your middle and the way your hands rested over his.â¨â¨Then she smiled.
âSorry,â she said, although she did not sound particularly sorry. âThe train was delayed.ââ¨â¨âYou said you were driving,â you replied.â¨â¨She paused.â¨â¨Seungminâs face disappeared briefly against your shoulder. You felt the silent shake of his laughter.
âI changed my mind,â your sister said.â¨â¨âClearly.ââ¨â¨She looked at Seungmin. âHave you been waiting long?ââ¨â¨âLong enough for her to attack me.â
âI moved your freezing hand away,â you said.â¨â¨Seungmin tightened his arms around your waist. âExactly.ââ¨â¨Your sister laughed, her gaze lingering on him a little too long. âYou poor thing.ââ¨â¨Your sister looked at you with a small, knowing smile. âYouâve always been like that.â
âLike what?ââ¨â¨âRough.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs eyebrows rose.â¨â¨You looked down at your outfit as though you might find evidence of roughness on your coat. âI pushed his hand away.â
âIâm only joking.ââ¨â¨âRight.ââ¨â¨âSheâs very frightening,â Seungmin said solemnly. âI live in constant fear.ââ¨â¨Then he kissed your cheek and released you, taking your hand instead. âCan we go inside before I lose feeling in my fingers?â
âYou stole my glove.ââ¨â¨âIt wasnât enough.ââ¨â¨Your sister walked beside him as you entered the shopping centre.â¨â¨You ended up on his other side.
It was not immediately strange. The pavement narrowed near the doors, people moved around you, and your sister had always been skilled at placing herself exactly where she wanted to be without appearing deliberate.â¨â¨But once you were inside, she remained there.â¨â¨She asked Seungmin what he thought you should buy. She asked whether he enjoyed shopping. She asked which shops he liked, whether he cared about clothes and whether he usually chose his own outfits.â¨â¨He answered politely.
Mostly.â¨â¨When she asked whether he had a favourite designer, he said, âWhoever makes comfortable trousers.ââ¨â¨When she asked what colours he liked on women, he said, âNormal ones.ââ¨â¨Your sister frowned. âI was asking a normal question.â
âI know,â you said. âHis answer was stupid.ââ¨â¨Seungmin swung your joined hands between you.â¨â¨Your sister glanced down.â¨â¨âI think youâd suit darker colours,â she told him.
âI wear dark colours.ââ¨â¨âI know. They make you look more mature.ââ¨â¨You looked across him. âWhat does he look like now?ââ¨â¨She ignored you. âYou have a very classic face.â
Seungmin turned towards you. âDo I?ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨He looked offended. âYou didnât even think about it.ââ¨â¨âI look at your face every day.â
âAnd youâve never thought it was classic?ââ¨â¨âIâve thought it was annoying.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât a facial structure.ââ¨â¨âIt should be.â
Your sister sighed softly. âYou never take compliments seriously.ââ¨â¨âShe rarely gives them,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âI complimented you this morning.ââ¨â¨âYou said my hair looked less strange than usual.â
âThat was generous.ââ¨â¨âYou also said I looked tired.ââ¨â¨âYou did.ââ¨â¨âYou make me feel very cherished.â
You stopped in the middle of the walkway and placed both hands around his face. âYou are beautiful.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs eyes narrowed suspiciously. âYouâre mocking me.ââ¨â¨âNever.ââ¨â¨âYouâre smiling.â
âBecause youâre beautiful.ââ¨â¨He stared at you for another second before his mouth betrayed him.â¨â¨A reluctant smile appeared.â¨â¨âThere,â you said, squeezing his cheeks. âPretty.â
Seungmin caught both your wrists and pulled your hands away. âDonât touch my face in public.ââ¨â¨âYou love it.ââ¨â¨Your sister had gone quiet.â¨â¨You released Seungminâs face and started walking again. He slipped his hand into yours as though the interruption had never happened.
The first shop was useless.â¨â¨The second was worse.â¨â¨Your mum had said she wanted something for the house, which sounded simple until you were faced with fifteen aisles of objects she might already own.â¨â¨Your sister suggested a decorative vase.
You reminded her that your mum had six.â¨â¨Seungmin picked up a tiny ceramic dog wearing a crown.â¨â¨You told him to put it down.â¨â¨âSheâd love him,â he said.
âSheâd ask why we bought her rubbish.ââ¨â¨âHeâs cute.ââ¨â¨âHeâs ugly.ââ¨â¨âHe can hear you.â
Your sister smiled at Seungmin. âI think heâs cute.ââ¨â¨You looked at her.â¨â¨She was not looking at the ceramic dog.â¨â¨Seungmin, apparently unaware or pretending to be, placed the ornament carefully in your hands. âHold him.â
âNo.ââ¨â¨âHe likes you.ââ¨â¨âYou like him.ââ¨â¨âHe reminds me of you.â
You stared at the dog.â¨â¨The dog stared back with badly painted eyes.â¨â¨âYouâre sleeping alone tonight.ââ¨â¨Seungmin smiled. âYou say that every week.â
âOne day Iâll mean it.ââ¨â¨âNo, you wonât.ââ¨â¨Your sister picked up a sleek glass vase and held it towards Seungmin. âWhat about this?ââ¨â¨He glanced at it. âItâs nice.â
âShe already has something similar,â you said.â¨â¨Your sisterâs smile tightened. âNot exactly like this.ââ¨â¨âItâs almost identical.ââ¨â¨âItâs more modern.â
âMum doesnât care about modern.ââ¨â¨âShe might.ââ¨â¨Your sister looked at Seungmin. âWhat do you think?ââ¨â¨He looked between you both.
Then at the vase.â¨â¨Then at the ceramic dog still in your hands.â¨â¨âI think we should buy the dog.ââ¨â¨You laughed.
Your sister did not.â¨â¨âYouâre both impossible,â she said, returning the vase to the shelf.â¨â¨âThat keeps coming up,â Seungmin replied.â¨â¨You carried the dog for another two aisles before secretly placing it on a display of cushions.
Seungmin noticed immediately.â¨â¨âWhere is he?ââ¨â¨âWho?ââ¨â¨âThe dog.â
âI donât know.ââ¨â¨âYou abandoned him.ââ¨â¨âHe wasnât ours.ââ¨â¨âHe could have been.â
âNot everything you like has to come home with us.ââ¨â¨âYou came home with me.ââ¨â¨Your sister laughed.â¨â¨You turned towards Seungmin slowly. âWas that meant to be sweet?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âIt sounded like you found me beside a road.ââ¨â¨âI rescued you.ââ¨â¨âFrom what?â
âYourself.ââ¨â¨You shoved him lightly towards a stack of towels.â¨â¨He caught your elbow and pulled you with him, making you stumble against his chest. His free arm wrapped around your waist before you could fall.â¨â¨You tried not to smile.
You failed.â¨â¨Your sister walked ahead.
๨ŕ§
After nearly an hour, you found a set of handmade serving bowls that your mum would genuinely like.â¨â¨Your sister thought they were plain.â¨â¨Seungmin thought one of them looked like a hat.â¨â¨You thought both of them needed to stop talking.
You were waiting at the till when your sister announced that she wanted coffee.â¨â¨âThereâs a place downstairs,â she said. âIâll go.ââ¨â¨âIâll come,â you replied. âI need the toilet anyway.ââ¨â¨Her expression flickered.
Only slightly.â¨â¨Then she smiled. âYou can stay with the bags. Seungmin and I can get them.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked up from the receipt in his hand.â¨â¨You looked at her.
She looked at him.â¨â¨There was a small silence.â¨â¨Then Seungmin said, âShe knows my order.ââ¨â¨Your sister recovered quickly. âYou can tell me.â
âIâll forget something.ââ¨â¨âItâs coffee.ââ¨â¨âHeâs very demanding,â you said.â¨â¨Seungmin nodded.
Your sister laughed, although her eyes stayed on him. âI think I can manage.ââ¨â¨You could have refused.â¨â¨Part of you wanted to, not because you thought anything would happen, but because your sisterâs intentions had become so transparent that allowing her to proceed felt almost embarrassing.â¨â¨Then curiosity won.
You handed the shopping bag to Seungmin. âFine. Get me something sweet.ââ¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âSurprise me.ââ¨â¨âThat always ends badly.â
âOnly because you make poor choices.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stared at you.â¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨He sighed. âFine.â
Your sister looked pleased.â¨â¨Far too pleased.â¨â¨You kissed Seungminâs cheek before stepping away. âDonât let her buy me anything with coconut.â
๨ŕ§
Seungmin watched you disappear into the crowd.â¨â¨He knew exactly what you were doing.â¨â¨You had kissed him in front of your sister on purpose.â¨â¨Not because you were worried.
Because you were a menace.â¨â¨A message appeared on his phone before he and your sister had reached the escalator.â¨â¨Donât fall in love while Iâm gone xâ¨â¨He smiled despite himself.
Your sister noticed.â¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âNothing.ââ¨â¨âWas that her?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âWhat did she say?ââ¨â¨Seungmin put his phone away. âNothing important.ââ¨â¨Your sister stepped onto the escalator beside him.
For several seconds, she was silent.â¨â¨Then she said, âShe checks on you a lot.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked at her. âDoes she?ââ¨â¨âSheâs always texting you.â
âWe text each other.ââ¨â¨âI know. I just mean she likes knowing where you are.ââ¨â¨He considered the comment.â¨â¨âShe sent me a joke.â
âWhat joke?ââ¨â¨âOne you wouldnât find funny.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs mouth tightened. âYou donât know that.ââ¨â¨âI know her sense of humour.â
âAnd mine?ââ¨â¨âNot really.ââ¨â¨The escalator carried them down another floor.â¨â¨Your sister rested one hand on the rail. âYou and her are very different.â
Seungmin looked ahead. âYouâve mentioned that.ââ¨â¨âI donât mean it as an insult.ââ¨â¨âYou keep saying that too.ââ¨â¨She laughed softly. âYou remember.â
âI have a good memory.ââ¨â¨âYou do seem observant.ââ¨â¨âSometimes.ââ¨â¨âThatâs why Iâm surprised.â
He turned his head.â¨â¨âBy what?ââ¨â¨She looked briefly uncertain, as if she had expected him to understand without making her say it aloud.â¨â¨âNothing.â
Seungmin faced forwards again.â¨â¨The coffee shop was busy. A line curled away from the counter, giving your sister more time than she probably needed.â¨â¨She moved closer to him as they joined it.â¨â¨âIâve always wondered how she ended up with someone like you.â
Seungminâs expression did not change.â¨â¨âSomeone like me?ââ¨â¨âSuccessful. Disciplined. Mature.ââ¨â¨âYou think she isnât those things?â
âI didnât say that.ââ¨â¨âYou implied it.ââ¨â¨Your sister sighed. âYouâre very defensive of her.ââ¨â¨âSheâs my girlfriend.â
âI know.ââ¨â¨âThen why are you surprised?ââ¨â¨âIâm not surprised. I just think you misunderstand me.ââ¨â¨Seungmin shoved one hand into his coat pocket. âThen explain.â
Your sister glanced towards the counter. The line had barely moved.â¨â¨âSheâs always been the sweet one,â she said. âThe one people feel protective over. Iâve always been more independent.ââ¨â¨âOkay.ââ¨â¨âShe needs more reassurance.â
âDoes she?ââ¨â¨âYouâve seen how she is.ââ¨â¨âI have.ââ¨â¨âAnd that doesnât get tiring?â
Seungmin looked at her properly.â¨â¨His tone stayed light, but his eyes sharpened. âNo.ââ¨â¨Your sister held his gaze. âYou donât have to pretend with me.ââ¨â¨âIâm not.â
âShe can be a lot.ââ¨â¨âSo can I.ââ¨â¨âYouâre different.ââ¨â¨âYou donât know me.â
The words landed more firmly than anything he had said before.â¨â¨Your sister blinked.â¨â¨Seungmin looked back towards the counter.â¨â¨The line moved forward.
For a few seconds, she said nothing.â¨â¨Then she tried again.â¨â¨âShe doesnât tell people this, but she used to get overlooked a lot when we were younger.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs jaw tightened.
âOverlooked by who?ââ¨â¨âPeople.ââ¨â¨Your sister exhaled, clearly frustrated by his refusal to fill in the gaps for her.â¨â¨âBoys usually noticed me first.â
Seungmin waited.â¨â¨She smiled faintly. âShe never minded. At least, she pretended not to.ââ¨â¨He looked at her.â¨â¨âAnd?â
âAnd nothing. Iâm only saying itâs probably nice for her to be the one someone chose for once.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stared at her for a long moment.â¨â¨Your sister interpreted the silence as an opening.â¨â¨âYouâre kind,â she continued. âYou probably donât even realise how much that means to her.â
âI noticed her.ââ¨â¨The sentence was quiet.â¨â¨Immediate.â¨â¨Your sisterâs smile faltered.
âI didnât say you didnât.ââ¨â¨âYou said people didnât.ââ¨â¨âI said they usually noticed me first.ââ¨â¨âI didnât.â
Something sharp passed across her face.â¨â¨Then she laughed.â¨â¨âYou hadnât met me.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked at her.
The confidence in her smile returned.â¨â¨It was not difficult to understand what she meant.â¨â¨If he had seen her first, things might have been different.â¨â¨If he knew her better, he might recognise what he had missed.
If you had not reached him before she did, perhaps he would have made the correct choice.â¨â¨Seungmin almost laughed.â¨â¨Instead, he said, âIâve met you now.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs smile remained fixed.
The line moved again.â¨â¨She stepped closer.â¨â¨âI think we have more in common than you realise.ââ¨â¨âDo we?â
âWeâre both ambitious.ââ¨â¨âSo is she.ââ¨â¨âWe care about how we present ourselves.ââ¨â¨âShe does too.â
âShe doesnât care what anyone thinks.ââ¨â¨âThatâs one of the things I like about her.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs eyes narrowed. âYou turn everything into a compliment about her.ââ¨â¨âYes.â
The answer was so simple that it left nowhere for the conversation to go.â¨â¨Your sister looked away.â¨â¨Seungminâs phone buzzed again.â¨â¨He checked it.
Is she seducing you yet?â¨â¨A second message appeared.â¨â¨Blink twice if you need rescueâ¨â¨Then:
Actually donât. I canât see youâ¨â¨He laughed under his breath.â¨â¨Your sister glanced towards the phone.â¨â¨âSheâs checking again?â
âSheâs entertaining herself.ââ¨â¨âShe doesnât trust me.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked up. âShould she?ââ¨â¨Your sister went still.
He raised his eyebrows slightly.â¨â¨For the first time, she seemed uncertain whether he was joking.â¨â¨Then he smiled.â¨â¨Not warmly.
Not cruelly either.â¨â¨Just enough to make the question impossible to challenge.â¨â¨Your sister looked towards the menu.â¨â¨âWhat did she want?â
âSomething sweet.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât very specific.ââ¨â¨âShe likes trying new things.ââ¨â¨âI know.â
âDo you?ââ¨â¨Your sister frowned. âSheâs my sister.ââ¨â¨Seungmin slipped his phone into his pocket. âThen choose.ââ¨â¨She looked at the display board.
After a moment, she suggested a coconut latte.â¨â¨Seungmin stared at her.â¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âShe hates coconut.â
Your sister hesitated. âDoes she?ââ¨â¨âShe told you five minutes ago.ââ¨â¨âI forgot.ââ¨â¨âI didnât.â
He ordered your favourite instead.
๨ŕ§
You returned to find them sitting at a small table near the window.â¨â¨Your sister was speaking.â¨â¨Seungmin was looking at his phone.â¨â¨That alone told you almost everything you needed to know.
He was never rude enough to ignore someone without a reason.â¨â¨When he spotted you, his entire expression changed.â¨â¨His shoulders relaxed. His mouth curved into a smile. He put his phone down and lifted one hand towards you.â¨â¨âThere you are.â
You slid into the seat beside him.â¨â¨Seungmin immediately hooked his fingers through the belt loop at the back of your jeans and tugged you closer.â¨â¨âI was gone for fifteen minutes.ââ¨â¨âIt was difficult.â
âYou seemed fine.ââ¨â¨Your sister looked between you.â¨â¨You picked up the drink in front of your seat and inspected it. âWhat did you get me?ââ¨â¨âTry it.â
âWhat is it?ââ¨â¨âIâm not telling you.ââ¨â¨âWhy?ââ¨â¨âYou said to surprise you.â
âI donât trust you.ââ¨â¨Seungmin pushed the cup closer. âDrink.ââ¨â¨You took a cautious sip.â¨â¨It was sweet, creamy and familiar.
Your favourite.â¨â¨You looked at him.â¨â¨He smiled smugly.â¨â¨âYou didnât choose something new.â
âI chose something youâd like.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât a surprise.ââ¨â¨âYou were surprised.ââ¨â¨âI was surprised you made a good decision.â
Seungmin leaned towards you. âSay thank you.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âSay it.ââ¨â¨âYouâre very demanding.â
âI carried the bowls.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre in one bag.ââ¨â¨âA heavy bag.ââ¨â¨âTheyâre ceramic, not concrete.â
Your sister interrupted. âHe remembered your order.ââ¨â¨You looked at her.â¨â¨There was something brittle in her voice.â¨â¨Seungmin rested his chin briefly on your shoulder and stole a sip of your drink.
You pushed his face away.â¨â¨âOf course he did,â you said. âHe orders it more than I do.ââ¨â¨âFor you,â he corrected.â¨â¨âYou steal half.â
âIt tastes better when itâs yours.ââ¨â¨âThatâs because youâre a thief.ââ¨â¨He smiled against your cheek.â¨â¨Your sister looked away.
You could practically feel the conversation you had interrupted sitting between them.â¨â¨You waited until Seungmin sat back.â¨â¨Then you asked, âDid you have a nice chat?ââ¨â¨Your sister reached for her coffee.
Seungmin looked at you.â¨â¨His eyes were bright with the effort of not laughing.â¨â¨âVery informative.ââ¨â¨âOh?â
âI learned that Iâm successful, disciplined and mature.ââ¨â¨You nodded solemnly. âOne out of three isnât bad.ââ¨â¨Seungmin kicked your foot beneath the table.â¨â¨You kicked him back.
Your sister sighed. âI was complimenting him.ââ¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨âShe thinks Iâm mature,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âShe doesnât live with you.â
âI donât live with you.ââ¨â¨Under the table, Seungminâs knee pressed against yours.â¨â¨You tapped it once with your own.â¨â¨He tapped back.
Your sister watched the movement.â¨â¨âI was only saying that youâre lucky,â she said.â¨â¨You looked at her. âAgain?ââ¨â¨âYou are.â
âI know.ââ¨â¨âShe thinks youâre lucky someone finally noticed you,â Seungmin added.â¨â¨The words were delivered with deceptive casualness.â¨â¨Your sisterâs head snapped towards him.
Your hand stilled around the cup.â¨â¨Seungmin lifted his drink.â¨â¨You looked at your sister.â¨â¨She looked suddenly furious.
âI didnât say it like that.ââ¨â¨âHow did you say it?ââ¨â¨âI said people usually noticed me first when we were younger.ââ¨â¨You raised your eyebrows.
Your sister leaned back. âIt was relevant to the conversation.ââ¨â¨âWhat conversation?ââ¨â¨âWe were talking about relationships.ââ¨â¨âYou were talking about mine?â
âShe asked whether dating you was tiring,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨You stared at him.â¨â¨He took a calm sip.â¨â¨Your sisterâs face reddened. âThat isnât what I asked.â
âIt was very close.ââ¨â¨âYouâre twisting my words.ââ¨â¨âI remember them quite clearly.ââ¨â¨You looked between them.
The ridiculousness of it arrived before the hurt could.â¨â¨Your sister had finally managed to get Seungmin alone, and she had apparently used the opportunity to explain why being with you must be exhausting.â¨â¨A laugh slipped out.â¨â¨Your sisterâs mouth tightened. âWhy are you laughing?â
âBecause you had fifteen minutes.ââ¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âYou finally got him alone and that was your strategy?ââ¨â¨Seungmin choked on his drink.
Your sister stared at you.â¨â¨You turned towards him. âAre you all right?ââ¨â¨He held up one hand and coughed into the other.â¨â¨âYouâre horrible,â he managed.
âYou were thinking it too.ââ¨â¨âI was trying to be polite.ââ¨â¨Your sister placed her cup on the table more firmly than necessary. âNothing happened.ââ¨â¨You looked at her. âI know.â
âThen stop acting like you caught me doing something.ââ¨â¨âI didnât catch you. He told me.ââ¨â¨Your sister stood.â¨â¨The legs of her chair scraped against the floor.
âIâm going to look at another shop.ââ¨â¨You glanced at the untouched coffee. âWe just sat down.ââ¨â¨âI remembered something I need.ââ¨â¨She grabbed her handbag.
Seungmin watched her.â¨â¨Your sister looked at him, waiting for something.â¨â¨An offer to come with her, perhaps.â¨â¨An apology.
A private look that confirmed all the things she had decided existed between them.â¨â¨Seungmin lifted his hand.â¨â¨For one hopeful second, she smiled.â¨â¨Then he pointed towards her cup. âAre you taking that?â
Her smile disappeared.â¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âCan I have it?ââ¨â¨You elbowed him.
âWhat?â he asked. âShe isnât drinking it.ââ¨â¨Your sister walked away without answering.â¨â¨You watched her disappear into the crowd.â¨â¨Then you turned slowly towards Seungmin.
He was already reaching for her abandoned coffee.â¨â¨You slapped his hand.â¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âShe said she didnât want it.â
âYou donât know whatâs in it.ââ¨â¨âCoffee.ââ¨â¨âShe might have poisoned it.ââ¨â¨âWhy would she poison her own drink?â
âShe sensed rejection.ââ¨â¨Seungmin laughed.â¨â¨You folded your arms. âWhat did she actually say?ââ¨â¨He gave up on the coffee and leaned back in his chair.
âExactly what I told you.ââ¨â¨âShe asked whether I was tiring?ââ¨â¨âShe implied that you need constant reassurance, said youâre a lot and suggested I probably chose you because Iâm kind.ââ¨â¨Your amusement faded a little.
Seungmin noticed immediately.â¨â¨His foot slid beside yours under the table.â¨â¨âShe also told me men usually noticed her first,â he added.â¨â¨You looked at the crowd beyond the window. âShe loves saying that.â
âI asked which men.ââ¨â¨That made you smile.â¨â¨Seungminâs knee pressed more firmly against yours.â¨â¨âShe couldnât name them.â
âYou interrogated her?ââ¨â¨âI asked good questions.ââ¨â¨âYou never ask good questions.ââ¨â¨âThatâs unfair.â
You looked back at him.â¨â¨He was watching you closely.â¨â¨Not pushing.â¨â¨Just waiting.
âWhat else?â you asked.â¨â¨Seungmin hesitated. âShe implied I might have chosen differently if Iâd met her first.ââ¨â¨A strange little ache settled beneath your ribs.â¨â¨Not because you believed it.
The idea of Seungmin choosing your sister felt almost comical.â¨â¨But because she believed your entire relationship could be reduced to timing.â¨â¨That you had simply arrived first and seized something that should have belonged to her.â¨â¨You looked down at your cup. âAnd what did you say?â
âThat Iâve met her now.ââ¨â¨Your mouth twitched.â¨â¨âThatâs all?ââ¨â¨âI thought it was enough.â
âIt is.ââ¨â¨âShe didnât like it.ââ¨â¨âIâm devastated for her.ââ¨â¨âI also told her I noticed you.â
Your fingers tightened slightly around the cup.â¨â¨Seungminâs expression softened.â¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âNothing.â
He leaned closer, lowering his voice. âI noticed you.ââ¨â¨You fought a smile.â¨â¨You covered his mouth with your hand.â¨â¨Seungmin kissed your palm.
You pulled it away immediately.â¨â¨âThatâs disgusting.ââ¨â¨âYou liked that too.ââ¨â¨âYouâre so pleased with yourself.â
âI handled a difficult social situation and bought you the correct drink.ââ¨â¨âYou want a medal?ââ¨â¨âA kiss would be appropriate.ââ¨â¨âYouâre asking for payment?â
âI did hard labour.ââ¨â¨âYou stood in a coffee queue.ââ¨â¨âWith your sister.ââ¨â¨You considered that.
Seungmin lifted his eyebrows.â¨â¨You leaned over and kissed his cheek.â¨â¨He turned his head at the last second, catching the corner of your mouth instead.â¨â¨You pulled back.
âThat was cheating.ââ¨â¨âYouâre slow.ââ¨â¨âYou tricked me.ââ¨â¨âYou still kissed me.â
âBarely.ââ¨â¨âYou can try again.ââ¨â¨âIâm not rewarding bad behaviour.ââ¨â¨Seungmin rested one elbow on the table. âThen Iâll have to live with the memory.â
âYouâre dramatic.ââ¨â¨âI suffered for fifteen minutes.ââ¨â¨âYou were texting me.ââ¨â¨âThat was my lifeline.â
You laughed and nudged his foot beneath the table.â¨â¨Seungmin caught your ankle between his.â¨â¨âYou know sheâs going to tell herself you only rejected her because you knew I was coming back.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs expression became thoughtful. âDo you want me to say it more directly?â
You looked towards the direction your sister had disappeared.â¨â¨Part of you wanted him to.â¨â¨Part of you knew she would turn even that into evidence of something else.â¨â¨âShe hasnât actually admitted she wants you,â you said.
âShe invited herself on our date.ââ¨â¨âWeâre buying Mum bowls.ââ¨â¨âA highly romantic date.ââ¨â¨Seungmin reached for your hand across the table.
His thumb brushed slowly over your knuckles.â¨â¨âIf she says something properly,â he said, âIâll answer properly.ââ¨â¨âYou have answered.ââ¨â¨âI mean without being polite.â
âThat sounds frightening.ââ¨â¨Seungmin squeezed your hand. âTell her that when she tries again.ââ¨â¨You looked at him.â¨â¨âWhen?â
He smiled.â¨â¨âYou think sheâs stopping?ââ¨â¨You glanced once more towards the crowd.â¨â¨âNo.â
âNeither do I.ââ¨â¨There was a pause.â¨â¨Then Seungmin brightened. âCan we go back for the dog?ââ¨â¨âNo.â
âHe could be part of your mumâs present.ââ¨â¨âShe would hate him.ââ¨â¨âSheâd learn to love him.ââ¨â¨âYou only knew him for ten minutes.â
âThat was enough.ââ¨â¨Seungmin smiled and lifted your hand to his mouth.â¨â¨This time, he kissed your knuckles slowly.â¨â¨You let him.
Your sister returned ten minutes later carrying nothing.â¨â¨Neither of you mentioned it.â¨â¨Seungmin did, however, remain close to you for the rest of the afternoon.â¨â¨His hand at your waist when people passed too close. His fingers laced through yours on the escalator. His chin briefly resting on your shoulder while you examined candles. His mouth near your ear when he whispered that one of them smelled like âan expensive wardrobeâ.
Your sister tried to walk beside him.â¨â¨Seungmin kept drifting back towards you.â¨â¨She asked his opinion.â¨â¨He asked yours.
She suggested shops.â¨â¨He followed wherever you went.â¨â¨By the time you left the shopping centre, your sister had stopped speaking unless someone addressed her directly.â¨â¨The three of you stood near the station while she checked the time.
âMy trainâs in five minutes,â she said.â¨â¨Your sister adjusted her handbag and looked at Seungmin. âIt was nice spending time with you.ââ¨â¨âYou too.ââ¨â¨âWe should do it again.â
You looked at him.â¨â¨He looked at you.â¨â¨Your sister noticed.â¨â¨âWithout making it into a whole family thing,â she added.
You raised your eyebrows.â¨â¨Seungmin slipped his arm around your shoulders. âI think she comes with me.ââ¨â¨Your sister laughed. âYouâre allowed separate friends.ââ¨â¨âI have friends.â
âShe means her,â you said.â¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨Your sisterâs cheeks coloured.â¨â¨âThat isnât what I meant.â
âWhat did you mean?â Seungmin asked.â¨â¨She looked at him.â¨â¨He waited.â¨â¨His expression was pleasant.
Curious.â¨â¨Entirely unwilling to rescue her.â¨â¨Your sisterâs train arrived with a rush of noise behind her.â¨â¨She glanced towards the platform.
âI have to go.ââ¨â¨âYou should hurry,â you said.â¨â¨She hugged you briefly.â¨â¨When she turned towards Seungmin, he lifted the shopping bag between them.
Your sister stopped.â¨â¨He smiled politely.â¨â¨âBye.ââ¨â¨For a moment, she looked as though she might push around the bag and hug him anyway.
Then she stepped back.â¨â¨âBye.ââ¨â¨You watched her hurry towards the train.â¨â¨As soon as she was out of earshot, Seungmin lowered the bag.
âYou used Mumâs bowls as a shield,â you said.â¨â¨âI panicked.ââ¨â¨âYouâre very brave.ââ¨â¨âShe hugged me last time.â
âTerrifying.ââ¨â¨âI didnât know what else to do.ââ¨â¨âYou could have hugged her.ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked horrified. âWhy would I do that?â
âSheâs confident and sophisticated.ââ¨â¨âStop.ââ¨â¨âMore your type.ââ¨â¨He pointed at you. âWe discussed this.â
âShe only needs an opportunity.ââ¨â¨âYouâre becoming annoying.ââ¨â¨âBecoming?ââ¨â¨âMore annoying.â
You smiled.â¨â¨Seungmin stared at you for a second.â¨â¨Then he hooked one arm around your waist and lifted you just enough that your shoes left the ground.â¨â¨You yelped.
âPut me down!ââ¨â¨âTake it back.ââ¨â¨âWeâre in public!ââ¨â¨âI donât care.â
You grabbed his shoulders, laughing as he carried you several steps away from the platform.â¨â¨Seungmin lowered you carefully to the ground.â¨â¨His smile softened.â¨â¨Seungmin took your hand again, swinging it once between you before pulling you towards the station exit.
âCome on,â he said. âWe have to go back.ââ¨â¨âFor what?ââ¨â¨âThe dog.ââ¨â¨âWe are not buying the dog.â
âHeâs waiting for us.ââ¨â¨âHeâs ceramic.ââ¨â¨âHeâll think we abandoned him.ââ¨â¨âYou said I was the abandoned animal.â
âI can rescue both of you.ââ¨â¨âYou already complain that I take up too much space.ââ¨â¨âHeâs small.ââ¨â¨âI hate you.â
Seungmin kissed the side of your head.â¨â¨He smiled and kept walking.â¨â¨You followed, because the station exit was in the same direction as the shop.â¨â¨Not because you had agreed to buy the dog.
Definitely not.â¨â¨When your mum opened her birthday present a week later, she found a beautiful set of handmade serving bowls.â¨â¨And, tucked between them, a tiny ceramic dog wearing a crown.â¨â¨She stared at it.
You stared at Seungmin.â¨â¨Seungmin looked unbearably pleased.
๨ŕ§
By the time you finished getting ready, Seungmin had changed his shirt twice, complained about both options and somehow blamed you for the fact that neither looked right.â¨â¨âYou said the black one was nice,â he reminded you from the bedroom doorway.â¨â¨âIt was nice.ââ¨â¨âAnd then you told me to wear the blue one.â
âBecause the blue one is nicer.ââ¨â¨âSo the black one was ugly.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât what I said.ââ¨â¨âItâs what you implied.â
You turned away from the mirror and looked at him. He stood with both shirts hanging from one hand, his hair still slightly damp from the shower and an expression of genuine betrayal on his face.â¨â¨âYouâre having a crisis over two nearly identical shirts.ââ¨â¨âThey arenât nearly identical.ââ¨â¨âOne is black and one is very dark blue.â
âExactly.ââ¨â¨You stared at him.â¨â¨Seungmin stared back.â¨â¨Then his gaze drifted slowly down your body.
The offence disappeared from his expression.â¨â¨You had chosen an outfit that made you feel good. You suspected you would regret that decision later, but Seungminâs reaction made it worth it.â¨â¨He looked at you for long enough that you lifted an eyebrow. âWhat?ââ¨â¨âNothing.â
âYouâre staring.ââ¨â¨âIâm looking.ââ¨â¨âAt what?ââ¨â¨âMy girlfriend.â
You tried not to smile. âHave you not seen me before?ââ¨â¨âNot in that.ââ¨â¨âYou watched me put it on.ââ¨â¨âI was distracted.â
âBy what?ââ¨â¨âThe shirt crisis.ââ¨â¨You laughed and turned back towards the mirror. Seungmin abandoned both shirts on the bed and crossed the room, wrapping his arms around your waist from behind.â¨â¨âYou look pretty,â he murmured, resting his chin on your shoulder.
âOnly pretty?ââ¨â¨His eyes narrowed at your reflection. âDonât become demanding.ââ¨â¨âYou stared at me for thirty seconds. I expected something better.ââ¨â¨âYou look very pretty.â
âThatâs the same thing with an extra word.ââ¨â¨âYou look so pretty that Iâm reconsidering letting you leave the flat.ââ¨â¨You smiled. âBetter.ââ¨â¨âI knew you were fishing.â
âI enjoy compliments.ââ¨â¨âI know.ââ¨â¨Seungmin kissed the side of your neck, then another spot slightly lower. You tilted your head instinctively before remembering you had spent far too long getting ready.â¨â¨âDonât ruin my makeup.â
âIâm nowhere near your makeup.ââ¨â¨âYouâll work your way up.ââ¨â¨âThat sounds like encouragement.ââ¨â¨You caught his wrists and pulled his arms away. Seungmin resisted just enough to make it difficult, then released you with an exaggerated sigh.
âYou donât love me anymore.ââ¨â¨âIâm trying to get us to the party.ââ¨â¨âChan said eight.ââ¨â¨âItâs quarter past.â
âExactly. Weâre early.ââ¨â¨You looked at him through the mirror. âFor what?ââ¨â¨âA party.ââ¨â¨âThat started fifteen minutes ago.â
âSocial events have a grace period.ââ¨â¨âYou invented that because youâre never ready on time.ââ¨â¨âI was ready.ââ¨â¨âYou arenât wearing a shirt.â
Seungmin looked down at his bare chest, then at the two shirts abandoned on the bed.â¨â¨Your phone buzzed on the dressing table.â¨â¨You picked it up.â¨â¨Your sister had messaged.
Are you there yet?â¨â¨A second message followed before you could reply.â¨â¨Is Seungmin going straight from yours?â¨â¨You turned the screen towards him.
Seungmin read both messages. His face remained blank for one beat, then he placed his chin back on your shoulder.â¨â¨âShe misses me.ââ¨â¨âShe saw you last week.ââ¨â¨âA long separation.â
âShe didnât ask whether I was going straight from mine.ââ¨â¨âShe knows youâll be there.ââ¨â¨âShe also knows youâll be there.ââ¨â¨âThat must be why she asked to come.â
You laughed and nudged him backwards with your hip. âPut the blue shirt on.ââ¨â¨âThe black one makes my shoulders look better.ââ¨â¨âThen wear the black one.ââ¨â¨âYou said the blue was nicer.â
âSeungmin.ââ¨â¨He smiled and kissed your cheek before finally retrieving the blue shirt.â¨â¨You replied to your sister while he dressed.â¨â¨Weâre leaving soon. Bring the drinks you promised Chan.
Her response came almost immediately.â¨â¨Whatâs Seungmin wearing?â¨â¨You looked up.â¨â¨He was buttoning the blue shirt.
You considered sending her a photograph of the black one lying empty on the bed.â¨â¨Instead, you typed:â¨â¨Clothes xâ¨â¨Seungmin glanced over. âWhat did you say?â
âNothing important.ââ¨â¨âYouâre smiling.ââ¨â¨âIâm entertaining myself.ââ¨â¨âIs she seducing me remotely now?â
âApparently she needs to prepare.ââ¨â¨âFor what?ââ¨â¨âTo be more your type.ââ¨â¨Seungmin finished the final button and walked towards you. âYouâre enjoying this far too much.â
âItâs funny.ââ¨â¨âUntil she touches my arm fifteen times.ââ¨â¨âMaybe she thinks thatâs where your romantic feelings are stored.ââ¨â¨âThat would explain why I keep trying to get away.â
You laughed, and Seungminâs smile softened. He reached out to fix the chain of your necklace where it had twisted, his fingers careful against the back of your neck.â¨â¨âTell me if it stops being funny,â he said.â¨â¨The words were quiet enough to change the air between you.â¨â¨You turned.
Seungmin let his hands settle at your waist.â¨â¨âI will.ââ¨â¨âPromise?ââ¨â¨âYou already made me promise.â
âIâm making you do it again.ââ¨â¨âVery controlling.ââ¨â¨âVery caring.ââ¨â¨âDebatable.â
He squeezed your waist. âPromise.ââ¨â¨You rested both hands against his chest. âI promise.ââ¨â¨Satisfied, Seungmin kissed your forehead. Then he leant back and examined his shirt in the mirror.â¨â¨âDo my shoulders look strange?â
You pushed him towards the door.
๨ŕ§
The party remained civilised for approximately forty minutes.â¨â¨Then Changbin brought out the shot glasses.â¨â¨Chan saw them from across the room and immediately shook his head. âTake it easyââ¨â¨âYou bought the alcohol,â Changbin reminded him.
Jisung appeared beside the kitchen counter as though summoned by the word drinking. âShots are normal.ââ¨â¨âYou said that last time and threw up in my shoes.ââ¨â¨âThat was unrelated.ââ¨â¨âIt was directly related.â
Felix slid into the space beside Jisung and began examining the bottles. You followed closely behind him, your own drink already mostly gone.â¨â¨Seungmin caught your wrist before you could reach for anything.â¨â¨âYouâre not doing shots.ââ¨â¨You looked at his hand around your wrist, then at him. âExcuse me?â
âYouâve already had three drinks.ââ¨â¨âSo have you.ââ¨â¨âI can still walk in a straight line.ââ¨â¨âI can walk in a straight line.â
Seungmin released you and pointed towards the hallway.â¨â¨You stared at him.â¨â¨He lifted his eyebrows.â¨â¨âYou want me to demonstrate?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨You placed your empty glass on the counter and turned towards the hallway with as much dignity as you could manage.â¨â¨Felix and Jisung watched in complete silence.â¨â¨You took three perfectly respectable steps.
Then your hip struck the edge of the sofa.â¨â¨You stopped.â¨â¨Seungmin smiled.â¨â¨âThe sofa moved.â
âItâs been there all night.ââ¨â¨âIt knew I was trying to prove something.ââ¨â¨Jisung nodded seriously. âFurniture can sense weakness.ââ¨â¨Minho, sitting nearby with his ankle resting over one knee, looked at him. âThat explains why you keep walking into doors.â
Jisung placed a hand over his chest. âWhy are you attacking me?ââ¨â¨âBecause you make it easy.ââ¨â¨Jisung abandoned the counter and dropped onto the sofa beside him. Within seconds, his legs were stretched across Minhoâs lap.â¨â¨Minho glanced down but made no effort to move them.
You pointed towards them. âHe canât walk straight either.ââ¨â¨âHeâs sitting,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âHe was walking badly earlier.ââ¨â¨Changbin began pouring.
Hyunjin took the bottle from Changbin before he could overfill the glasses. âAt least make them even. Youâre pouring like youâve never seen liquid before.ââ¨â¨âIâm being generous.ââ¨â¨âYouâre trying to kill Jisung.ââ¨â¨Jisung lifted his head from Minhoâs shoulder. âYes please.â
Minho pressed one hand against his forehead and pushed him back down. âYou accept nothing.ââ¨â¨You managed to claim a glass before Seungmin could stop you.â¨â¨Felix took one.â¨â¨Jisung reached for another, but Minho lifted it out of reach.
Jisung stared at him. âGive it.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âYou arenât my father.ââ¨â¨âThank fuck for that.â
âYou canât control me.ââ¨â¨Minho looked at the legs still resting across his lap. âStand up, then.ââ¨â¨Jisung considered it.â¨â¨âNo.â
âThought so.ââ¨â¨Felix passed Jisung his own glass beneath the edge of the table.â¨â¨Minho saw.â¨â¨He allowed it.
You caught his eye.â¨â¨Minho shrugged and took another drink.â¨â¨âTraitor,â Seungmin told him.â¨â¨âIâm off duty.â
âYou were never on duty,â Chan said.â¨â¨âExactly.ââ¨â¨Changbin raised his glass. âTo Chan finally letting us have fun.ââ¨â¨âThis is my party.â
âThen act like it.ââ¨â¨Chan swore at him, but lifted his drink anyway.â¨â¨Everyone crowded closer.â¨â¨Your friend remained beside your sister near the end of the counter, amused but still slightly removed from the intimacy of the group. You caught her eye and held up your glass.
She lifted hers back.â¨â¨Your sister barely noticed.â¨â¨She was watching Seungmin.â¨â¨He stood behind you with one hand resting against your hip, his thumb moving absently beneath the hem of your top.
You leaned back into him.â¨â¨âTo being hot,â Hyunjin said.â¨â¨Jeongin nodded. âFinally, something relevant.ââ¨â¨Chan looked around the group. âCan we toast to something normal?â
âNo,â everyone replied.â¨â¨The shot burned on the way down.â¨â¨Felix coughed.â¨â¨You squeezed your eyes shut and grabbed the first solid thing you found.
It was Changbinâs arm.â¨â¨âFuck.ââ¨â¨Changbin laughed. âYou agreed to it.ââ¨â¨âThat tasted like paint stripper.â
âYouâve never tasted paint stripper.ââ¨â¨âMaybe I have.ââ¨â¨Seungmin pulled you backwards against his chest. âAnd this is why you werenât doing shots.ââ¨â¨You turned in his arms. âI did one.â
âYou nearly died.ââ¨â¨âI recovered.ââ¨â¨âYouâre still holding Changbin. You could have held me.ââ¨â¨You looked down to find your hand still wrapped around Changbinâs bicep and slowly released him. âCome back when youâve got biceps, bud.â
Seungmin stared at you for a beat before catching you around the waist and pulling you firmly against his chest. âYou seemed perfectly happy with mine earlier.ââ¨â¨You placed a hand against his arm as though inspecting it. âTheyâre all right.ââ¨â¨His grip tightened. âAll right?ââ¨â¨You smiled. âMaybe a little better than that.â
๨ŕ§
Someone suggested a drinking game.â¨â¨Nobody later remembered who.â¨â¨You all ended up sitting in a loose circle around the living room with bottles, half-empty glasses and bowls of food scattered between you.â¨â¨Your friend sat beside your sister on the sofa. You were on the floor between Felix and Seungmin, with your back against Seungminâs legs. His hand rested loosely at the base of your throat, occasionally brushing your hair aside.
Jisung had begun the game beside Minho.â¨â¨By the third round, he was mostly sitting on him.â¨â¨âNever have I ever,â Jeongin began, smiling in a way that immediately made Chan suspicious, âlied to get out of plans with someone in this room.ââ¨â¨Nearly everyone drank.
Chan stared at the group. âAre you serious?ââ¨â¨âYou make too many plans,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âI ask whether you want dinner.ââ¨â¨âThatâs still a plan.â
You lifted your glass.â¨â¨Seungmin looked down at you. âWhen did you lie to me?ââ¨â¨You took a long sip.â¨â¨His fingers tightened gently at the back of your neck.
âWhen?ââ¨â¨You smiled into your drink. âNext question.ââ¨â¨âNo. Weâre staying here.ââ¨â¨Felix laughed. âShe said she was ill once because she wanted to watch a film with us.â
Seungmin stared at you.â¨â¨âYou exposed me,â you told Felix.â¨â¨âI forgot it was a secret.ââ¨â¨âYou chose them over me?â Seungmin asked.
âYou were working.ââ¨â¨âYou still lied.ââ¨â¨âYou wouldâve sulked.ââ¨â¨âI am sulking now.â
You twisted around to look at him. âDo you need a kiss?ââ¨â¨Seungmin considered the offer.â¨â¨âYes.ââ¨â¨You kissed him quickly.
He kept one hand against your jaw and prevented you from moving away.â¨â¨âThat was inadequate.ââ¨â¨Everyone groaned.â¨â¨You laughed against his mouth before kissing him again, slower this time.
When you finally pulled away, Changbin threw a crisp at Seungminâs head.â¨â¨âSome of us are single.ââ¨â¨âYou donât have to watch,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨âYouâre in the middle of the room.â
âLook somewhere else.ââ¨â¨Hyunjin placed one hand against Changbinâs cheek and turned his face away. âThere. Problem solved.ââ¨â¨Changbin bit his palm.â¨â¨Hyunjin screamed.
The game continued.â¨â¨âNever have I ever had a crush on someone in this room,â Felix said.â¨â¨Silence fell.â¨â¨Then Jeongin drank.
Hyunjin drank.â¨â¨Changbin drank.â¨â¨Jisung lifted his glass, looked around and drank twice.â¨â¨Minho looked at him. âTwice?â
Jisung rested his chin on Minhoâs shoulder. âI contain multitudes.ââ¨â¨Minho took Jisungâs glass and drank from it.â¨â¨The room erupted.â¨â¨Jisung stared at him, eyes widening. âWas that your answer?â
âIt was your drink.ââ¨â¨âYou have your own.ââ¨â¨âI wanted yours.ââ¨â¨âThat is not an answer.â
Minho smiled into the rim of the glass.â¨â¨You turned towards Felix.â¨â¨He was already looking at you.â¨â¨Both of you burst out laughing.
âDonât,â Minho warned.â¨â¨You covered your mouth with both hands.â¨â¨Seungminâs chest shook behind you.â¨â¨Your sister remained completely still.
You could feel her watching.â¨â¨Felix nudged your knee. âYou didnât drink.ââ¨â¨âIâm dating someone in the room.ââ¨â¨âThat doesnât mean you never had a crush.â
Seungminâs fingers slid beneath your chin and turned your face towards him.â¨â¨âYou had better drink.ââ¨â¨You stared at him. âWhy?ââ¨â¨âBecause you had a crush on me.â
âThat was never confirmed.ââ¨â¨âYou asked Chan for my number.ââ¨â¨The group laughed.â¨â¨Your sisterâs glass stopped halfway to her mouth.
Seungminâs eyes flicked towards her, then back to you.â¨â¨Your smile softened despite the alcohol.â¨â¨Felix made an emotional noise.â¨â¨Minho pointed at him. âDonât fucking start.â
Felixâs eyes had already begun shining.â¨â¨âIâm fine.ââ¨â¨âYouâre about to cry.ââ¨â¨âI just think theyâre cute.â
Seungmin felt you sniff.â¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âIâm not doing anything.ââ¨â¨âYouâre crying.â
âFelix started it.ââ¨â¨Felix wiped beneath one eye. âIâm happy.ââ¨â¨âThat makes it worse,â Seungmin said.â¨â¨You twisted and threw your arms around him.
He caught you automatically.â¨â¨âI love you.ââ¨â¨Seungmin sighed, but his arms tightened around your waist.â¨â¨âI love you too.â
๨ŕ§
The music became louder after that.â¨â¨So did everyone.â¨â¨Chan lost control of the playlist when you, Felix and Jisung began shouting over every song until he played something you liked. By then, the coffee table had disappeared beneath bottles, crushed cans and bowls of snacks nobody remembered opening. Somebody had spilt something sticky beside the sofa. Changbin had taken his shirt off for reasons nobody understood, and Hyunjin kept threatening to throw it out of the nearest window.â¨â¨You, Felix and Jisung dragged one another into the middle of the room.
At first, you actually danced.â¨â¨Felix knew what he was doing even while drunk. Jisung knew what he was doing until something distracted him, which happened every ten seconds. You possessed confidence far beyond your ability and therefore believed you looked incredible.â¨â¨Changbin encouraged that delusion by cheering whenever you moved.â¨â¨Hyunjin attempted to correct your posture once.
You told him to fuck off.â¨â¨He looked deeply wounded. âIâm trying to save you.ââ¨â¨âI donât need saving.ââ¨â¨âYouâre dancing like your limbs have separate plans.â
âTheyâre expressing themselves.ââ¨â¨Felix laughed and caught your waist before you could stumble into the coffee table. Jisung pressed against your back, shouting the lyrics directly beside your ear while the three of you moved with very little coordination and enormous enthusiasm.â¨â¨From the sofa, Seungmin watched you.â¨â¨His blue shirt had come unbuttoned slightly at the throat, his hair had fallen across his forehead and his cheeks were warm from the alcohol. One hand rested around his glass while his eyes remained fixed on you.
Your sister sat only a few feet away.â¨â¨She attempted to speak to him twice.â¨â¨He answered politely, but barely looked in her direction.â¨â¨When you caught his gaze, you smiled and crooked one finger towards him.
Seungmin shook his head.â¨â¨You did it again.â¨â¨He lifted his drink as though that explained why he could not move.â¨â¨You pouted.
That worked.â¨â¨Seungmin put the glass down and crossed the room.â¨â¨Felix released your waist with a grin. Jisung remained attached to you until Minho appeared behind him, hooked an arm around his middle and pulled him backwards.â¨â¨Jisung laughed and twisted in his hold. âJealous?â
Minho murmured something into his ear.â¨â¨Whatever it was made Jisungâs face turn bright red.â¨â¨Felix screamed.â¨â¨You screamed because Felix did.
Seungmin caught your face between both hands. âWhy are you shouting?ââ¨â¨You pointed vaguely towards Minho and Jisung. âSomething happened.ââ¨â¨âNothing happened,â Minho said without looking at you.â¨â¨Jisung buried his face against his shoulder.
You grinned. âSomething definitely happened.ââ¨â¨Minho gave you a warning look.â¨â¨You immediately turned back to Seungmin and began adjusting his collar as though that had always been your intention.â¨â¨âCoward,â Seungmin murmured.
âYouâre supposed to protect me.ââ¨â¨âFrom the consequences of your own behaviour?ââ¨â¨âYouâre my boyfriend.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât what that means.â
His hands slid to your waist as the song changed. You pulled him closer, and although he continued pretending not to dance, his body fell easily into the rhythm of yours.â¨â¨âThere,â you said. âYouâre dancing.ââ¨â¨âIâm standing near you.ââ¨â¨âYouâre moving.â
âYou keep dragging me around.ââ¨â¨âYou love it.ââ¨â¨Seungmin lowered his mouth beside your ear. âI love you.ââ¨â¨The softness of it caught beneath your ribs.
You turned and kissed him.â¨â¨He kissed you back without hesitation, one hand spreading across the small of your back while the party surged around you. Someone wolf-whistled. Someone else shouted at them to shut the fuck up.â¨â¨You suspected one of them had been Changbin.â¨â¨When you pulled away, Seungmin followed far enough to steal another brief kiss.
âYouâre clingy,â you murmured.â¨â¨âYou called me over.ââ¨â¨âAnd you came.ââ¨â¨âYou pouted.â
âThatâs all it takes?ââ¨â¨âUnfortunately.ââ¨â¨You smiled and kissed the edge of his jaw.â¨â¨His eyes closed.
âAgain.ââ¨â¨âYouâre demanding.ââ¨â¨You kissed his jaw again, and Seungminâs grip tightened around your waist.â¨â¨Across the room, your sister emptied the rest of her glass.
You barely noticed.â¨â¨Seungminâs attention had already wandered from dancing to pressing lazy kisses against whatever part of you happened to be closestâyour temple, your cheek, the corner of your mouth.â¨â¨When his lips brushed beneath your ear, you laughed and pushed lightly at his chest. âYouâve completely stopped dancing.ââ¨â¨âI never started.â
âYou came over.ââ¨â¨âYou summoned me.ââ¨â¨âI moved one finger.ââ¨â¨âVery controlling.â
His hand settled lower against your back, holding you close when somebody squeezed past.â¨â¨You reached up and fixed his collar again. âYou look messy.ââ¨â¨âYou made me messy.ââ¨â¨âThat sounds suggestive.â
âIt was meant to.ââ¨â¨His smile turned slow and pleased.â¨â¨Before he could say anything worse, Felix collided gently with your side and caught your hand. âI need her.ââ¨â¨Seungmin kept one arm around you. âYouâve had her for three songs.â
âThe next oneâs important.ââ¨â¨âTheyâve all been important,â you said.â¨â¨Seungmin looked at Felix. âYou sound like her.ââ¨â¨âThatâs why she loves me.â
Felix pulled. Seungmin held on.â¨â¨You found yourself stretched between them.â¨â¨âDonât make me choose.ââ¨â¨Felix smiled. âYouâll choose me.â
Seungminâs eyebrows lifted. âChoose carefully.ââ¨â¨You pretended to consider it before twisting out of Seungminâs arm, kissing him quickly and letting Felix drag you away.â¨â¨âCoward,â Seungmin called after you.â¨â¨âYou still got a kiss!â
âBarely.ââ¨â¨You laughed as Felix pulled you back into the crowd.â¨â¨The next hour dissolved into heat, noise and flashes of movement.â¨â¨Hyunjin danced as though someone might be filming him. Changbin attempted to copy him with enough force to make the floor shake.
Nearby, Minho took the glass out of Jisungâs hand and drank from it himself.â¨â¨Jisung watched him. âYou said I couldnât have that.ââ¨â¨âYou canât.ââ¨â¨âBut you can?â
âYes.ââ¨â¨âThatâs hot.ââ¨â¨Minho looked away, but not before you saw him smile.â¨â¨Someone produced two microphones.
The karaoke began badly and deteriorated almost immediately.â¨â¨You, Felix and Jisung chose a song all three of you knew, which would have helped if any of you had agreed on when to start. Jisung came in too early. You missed half the first line. Felix attempted to hold the performance together and ended up laughing so hard that he could no longer sing.â¨â¨Changbin provided backing vocals without a microphone.â¨â¨Hyunjin acted out the lyrics from the sofa.
Chan kept trying to lower the volume and being shouted at whenever the music became even slightly quieter.â¨â¨By the second song, you had abandoned any pretence of performing well. You and Felix shared one microphone while Jisung used the other for increasingly dramatic ad-libs that had nothing to do with the actual song.â¨â¨Halfway through the chorus, you passed close enough to the sofa for Seungmin to hook his fingers around your wrist.â¨â¨He pulled.
You landed sideways across his lap, and the microphone struck his shoulder.â¨â¨âShit. Sorry.ââ¨â¨Seungmin took it from you before you could hit him again. âOuch.ââ¨â¨âIâm performing.â
âYouâre screaming into expensive equipment.ââ¨â¨He placed the microphone safely on the table.â¨â¨Felix shouted your name.â¨â¨You tried to stand, but Seungmin held your waist.
âI have responsibilities,â you told him.â¨â¨âYou have absolutely no responsibilities.ââ¨â¨âFelix needs me.ââ¨â¨Felix and Jisung had abandoned the song and were arguing with Chan about whether the lyrics on the screen were wrong.
Seungmin looked towards them. âThey seem busy.ââ¨â¨âThen I need to help.ââ¨â¨âYou need to stay here for thirty seconds.ââ¨â¨âWhy?â
âI missed you.ââ¨â¨Your expression softened before you could stop it.â¨â¨Seungmin smiled, knowing he had won.â¨â¨âYouâre manipulative.â
You settled more comfortably across his thighs, one arm circling his shoulders. Seungmin rested his face against your chest and closed his eyes while your fingers moved through his hair.â¨â¨Across from you, your sisterâs gaze remained fixed on his hand resting against your thigh.â¨â¨Your friend was speaking to her.â¨â¨Your sister nodded without listening.
By one in the morning, the party had split between the living room, the kitchen and the balcony.â¨â¨The music remained loud enough to vibrate through the floor. People drifted between conversations with drinks they had not poured and jackets that did not belong to them. Someone had opened a window, but the room was still hot with too many bodies and the sharp mixture of alcohol, perfume and whatever Changbin had sprayed after insisting he smelled fine.â¨â¨Your friend remained mostly with your sister.â¨â¨She laughed whenever the group became loud enough to include everyone, but she never tried to force herself into the easy physical closeness surrounding the boys.
You checked on her whenever you remembered.â¨â¨Each time, she assured you she was fine.â¨â¨Your sister always said the same.â¨â¨The fourth time you approached, your friend caught your wrist. âYou are incredibly drunk.â
You looked down at yourself. âIâm standing.ââ¨â¨âBarely.ââ¨â¨Your friend laughed.â¨â¨Your sister did not. âSheâs been throwing herself around for hours. She always gets like this when she drinks.â
There was something dismissive beneath the words.â¨â¨You recognised it even through the alcohol.â¨â¨Your friend did too.â¨â¨âShe looks like sheâs having fun,â she replied.
âIâm having an incredible time,â you announced.â¨â¨âI can tell.ââ¨â¨Your sister glanced across the room towards Seungmin. âHe must be exhausted.ââ¨â¨You followed her gaze.
Seungmin was beside Chan, listening to Changbin explain something with far too much hand movement. He caught you looking almost immediately and lifted one eyebrow in silent question.â¨â¨You smiled.â¨â¨He smiled back.â¨â¨âDoes he look exhausted?â you asked.
âHeâs spent the whole night following you around.ââ¨â¨âHe likes me.ââ¨â¨âIâm aware.ââ¨â¨Before the conversation could sharpen, Felix appeared behind you and looped an arm around your shoulders. âThere you are.â
âIâve been here.ââ¨â¨âYou disappeared.ââ¨â¨âI was checking on them.ââ¨â¨Felix glanced towards your friend and sister. âEverything good?â
Your friend nodded. âWeâre fine.ââ¨â¨Your sister smiled at him. âWe were talking.ââ¨â¨âGreat. Iâm stealing her.ââ¨â¨âYou always steal her,â your sister said.
Felix laughed as though she had made a joke. âEveryone does.ââ¨â¨He pulled you towards the kitchen.â¨â¨You looked back once.â¨â¨Your friend gave you a small, reassuring smile.
Your sister was already watching Seungmin again.â¨â¨In the kitchen, Jisung was sitting on the counter while Minho stood between his knees, holding a glass out of reach.â¨â¨âThatâs mine,â Jisung complained.â¨â¨âIt was yours.â
âIâm not finished.ââ¨â¨âYou said the room was spinning.ââ¨â¨âIt stopped.ââ¨â¨âWhen?â
âWhen I closed one eye.ââ¨â¨Felix immediately took Jisungâs side. âGive it back.ââ¨â¨Minho looked at him. âYouâre a terrible influence.ââ¨â¨âYouâre drinking too,â you pointed out.
âI can handle it.ââ¨â¨âSo can I.ââ¨â¨Minho gave up and handed the drink to you instead.â¨â¨Jisung gasped. âThatâs mine.â
âYouâre too drunk.ââ¨â¨âSo are you.ââ¨â¨âIâm handling it better.ââ¨â¨Felix took the glass from you and drank before either of you could protest.
Minho laughed.â¨â¨It was becoming obvious that he was far drunker than he appeared. His movements were still controlled and his words remained clear, but his eyes had softened and he was smiling much too often.â¨â¨You stepped into the space beside him and wrapped both arms around his waist.â¨â¨Minho looked down. âWhatâs this?â
âIâm appreciating you.ââ¨â¨âYouâre crushing my shirt.ââ¨â¨You rested your cheek against his chest. âYou smell nice.ââ¨â¨âNone of you are getting another drink.â
âYou ruined it,â you complained.â¨â¨âHe ruins everything,â Jisung agreed.â¨â¨Minho caught Jisungâs chin and tilted his face upwards. âYou can barely keep both eyes open.ââ¨â¨âI only need one.â
âFor what?ââ¨â¨âTo look at you.ââ¨â¨Minho stared at him.â¨â¨You buried your face against Minhoâs shoulder to hide your laughter.
Jisung looked unbearably pleased with himself.â¨â¨Minhoâs ears turned pink. âYouâre a fucking menace.ââ¨â¨âYou love me.ââ¨â¨Seungmin entered the kitchen before anyone could comment.
He looked at Minhoâs arm around you and Jisung hanging over his shouldersâ¨â¨Then he looked at Minho. âYouâve collected them.ââ¨â¨âI didnât.ââ¨â¨Seungmin approached and slid both hands onto your hips. âYou keep disappearing.â
âYou were talking.ââ¨â¨âI can talk while holding you.ââ¨â¨âThat sounds inconvenient.ââ¨â¨âIâm talented.â
Minho nodded towards you. âTake her before she asks for another shot.ââ¨â¨You turned in Seungminâs arms. âHeâs trying to get rid of me.ââ¨â¨âYouâre attached to his shirt.ââ¨â¨âI like him.â
âYou like everyone tonight.ââ¨â¨âI like everyone every night.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs expression softened.â¨â¨The next drinking game began in the kitchen because nobody could be bothered to move.
It was meant to be truth or drink.â¨â¨Within minutes, it became an excuse to ask invasive questions and shout whenever somebody refused to answer.â¨â¨Changbin joined first, followed by Hyunjin and Jeongin. Chan arrived last, realised what was happening and attempted to leave.â¨â¨You caught his wrist. âNo.â
âIâm hosting.ââ¨â¨âYouâre hiding.ââ¨â¨âI need to check the living room.ââ¨â¨Jeongin looked towards the doorway. âItâs still there.â
Chan appealed silently to Minho for help.â¨â¨Minho poured him a drink.â¨â¨âTraitor.ââ¨â¨âYou chose to host.â
Everyone crowded around the counter and floor.â¨â¨You ended up sitting between Minhoâs legs with your back against his chest because the chairs had disappeared beneath coats and bags. Seungmin sat in front of you, one hand wrapped loosely around your ankle. Jisung remained tucked against Minhoâs side, his head on his shoulder and one leg draped over yours.â¨â¨Changbin pointed at you first. âTruth or drink?ââ¨â¨âTruth.â
âWhatâs the most embarrassing thing youâve done because you were jealous?ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked interested.â¨â¨You looked at Changbin. âIâm not jealous.ââ¨â¨The entire room laughed.
âThat wasnât the question,â Hyunjin said.â¨â¨You raised your glass. âThen Iâm drinking.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs hand tightened around your ankle. âAnswer.ââ¨â¨âYou donât get to interfere.â
âIâm probably involved.ââ¨â¨âYou donât know that.ââ¨â¨âI definitely know that.ââ¨â¨You drank instead.
Everyone shouted.â¨â¨âCoward,â Changbin said.â¨â¨âThatâs the point of the game.ââ¨â¨âThe point is to expose yourself.â
âThat sounds like a different game,â Jeongin said.â¨â¨You chucked at thatâ¨â¨The questions became worse from there.â¨â¨Felix refused to reveal who had received a flirtatious message he sent to the wrong person.
Changbin demanded to know whether anybody had ever hooked up somewhere they could have been caught.â¨â¨Half the room drank.â¨â¨Chan stared at everyone with a raised eyebrow. âIn my home?ââ¨â¨âNot necessarily,â Jeongin said.
âThat did not reassure me.ââ¨â¨Jisung claimed he had never done anything humiliating because he was horny.â¨â¨The entire group drank on his behalf.â¨â¨âFuck all of you.â
Minho leant close enough to murmur something beside his ear.â¨â¨Jisungâs face turned red again.â¨â¨You twisted around. âWhat did he say?ââ¨â¨âNothing.â
Minho looked unbearably pleased.â¨â¨Your sister stood at the edge of the kitchen beside your friend.â¨â¨She watched Seungminâs hand move slowly over your ankle. Then she watched Minhoâs arm settle across your middle when you leant back against him.â¨â¨Perhaps she expected Seungmin to object.
Instead, he reached forward, caught your chin and tilted your face towards his.â¨â¨âMy turn,â he said.â¨â¨You kissed him.â¨â¨The kiss was brief, but intimate enough to inspire several dramatic complaints.
When you pulled away, Seungminâs thumb brushed once beneath your lip.â¨â¨Your sister looked away.â¨â¨The game ended when Chan realised the music in the living room was loud enough to make the glasses vibrate.â¨â¨Everyone returned to dancing.
By then, nobody pretended it was organised.â¨â¨You, Felix and Jisung shouted lyrics you barely knew with your arms around one another. Sometimes you danced. Sometimes you merely jumped during the chorus and trusted somebody to catch you.â¨â¨Changbin joined whenever the song was good.â¨â¨Hyunjin joined whenever he considered the song worthy.
Jeongin joined only to make everyone else look worse.â¨â¨At one point, Minho caught your hand as you passed and spun you beneath his arm.â¨â¨You nearly completed the movement gracefully.â¨â¨Then you lost your balance.
Minho caught you against his chest. Jisung caught you from the other side.â¨â¨The three of you laughed, tangled together.â¨â¨Seungmin appeared behind you and closed both hands around your waist.â¨â¨âYouâre stealing my girlfriend,â he told Minho.
Minho shrugged. âShe came willingly.ââ¨â¨âHe spun me.ââ¨â¨âYou asked,â Minho reminded you.â¨â¨Seungmin looked down at you. âYou ask everyone for things.â
âAnd they give them to me.ââ¨â¨âThatâs because youâre spoilt.ââ¨â¨âBy you.ââ¨â¨âMostly.â
He kissed your forehead.â¨â¨You leant into him, suddenly overwhelmed by the warmth of the room and how much you loved everyone in it.â¨â¨Across the room, your friend smiled at the sight.â¨â¨Your sister finished another drink.
By the time you needed the bathroom, you were far beyond pleasantly drunk.â¨â¨You were still awake, still talking and technically capable of walking, but the room tilted whenever you turned too quickly.â¨â¨Seungmin noticed you heading towards the hallway and followed.â¨â¨You looked over your shoulder. âWhere are you going?â
âWith you.ââ¨â¨âI can piss alone.ââ¨â¨âIâm making sure you reach the bathroom.ââ¨â¨âThatâs insulting.â
Seungmin caught your waist before you walked into the wall. âExactly.ââ¨â¨You allowed him to guide you down the hallway, although you complained the entire way.â¨â¨At the bathroom door, you planted both hands against his chest. âYou canât come in.ââ¨â¨âI wasnât planning to.â
âYou looked like you were.ââ¨â¨âI was opening the door.ââ¨â¨Seungmin smiled and kissed your forehead. âIâll be here.ââ¨â¨âWhy?â
âBecause youâll forget where the living room is.ââ¨â¨âItâs one hallway.ââ¨â¨âAnd yet.ââ¨â¨You narrowed your eyes and disappeared into the bathroom.
When you came back out, your sister was standing in front of him.â¨â¨One hand rested against the wall beside his shoulder.â¨â¨Seungmin was leaning away.â¨â¨âYou could come upstairs with me,â she said.
He blinked at her. âWhy?ââ¨â¨You stopped in the doorway.â¨â¨Even through the alcohol, laughter rose immediately in your chest.â¨â¨Your sister looked at him as though he were deliberately being stupid. âYou know why.â
âI genuinely donât.ââ¨â¨She moved closer, forcing Seungminâs back against the wall.â¨â¨âWe could have sex.ââ¨â¨For one long second, Seungmin simply stared at her.
Then his gaze found yours over her shoulder.â¨â¨You covered your mouth.â¨â¨The expression on his face made it impossible not to laugh. His eyes widened slightly, one corner of his mouth twitching as though he could not decide whether to be horrified or offended.â¨â¨Your sister followed his gaze and found you standing there.
Her face hardened.â¨â¨âOh, please. Donât act like itâs ridiculous.ââ¨â¨That made you laugh harder. âIâm sorry. His face.ââ¨â¨âYouâre not helping,â Seungmin said.
âYou asked why.ââ¨â¨âIt was a reasonable question.ââ¨â¨âShe invited you upstairs.ââ¨â¨âShe couldâve needed something.â
âAt one in the morning?ââ¨â¨âI didnât know what she meant.ââ¨â¨âYou did,â your sister snapped.â¨â¨Seungmin looked back at her. âApparently not.â
She folded her arms. âYou havenât even considered it.ââ¨â¨âNo.ââ¨â¨âWhy?ââ¨â¨He stared at her.
Then he gave one short, humourless laugh. âBecause I donât want to.ââ¨â¨âYou donât know that.ââ¨â¨âI do.ââ¨â¨âYouâve never given me a chance.â
âIâm not required to.ââ¨â¨Your laughter faded.â¨â¨Your sister stepped closer and reached for his chest.â¨â¨Seungmin caught her wrist before she could touch him.
âStop.ââ¨â¨The word was calm.â¨â¨Firm.â¨â¨He moved her hand away and released it.
Humiliation sharpened your sisterâs expression as she turned towards you. âYou think this is funny because you assume heâd never choose me.ââ¨â¨âI donât assume it.ââ¨â¨âYou should stop speaking for him.ââ¨â¨âIâm standing right here,â Seungmin said.
She ignored him. âYouâve always done this. You get something and act smug because you know somebody else deserves it more.ââ¨â¨The alcohol inside you turned suddenly heavy.â¨â¨You steadied yourself against the bathroom door. âSomebody else?ââ¨â¨âYou know what I mean.â
âNo. Say it properly.ââ¨â¨Her eyes travelled over you.â¨â¨Your clothes had shifted from dancing. Your lipstick was smudged. Your hair was a mess and your balance remained questionable.â¨â¨You had never felt happier.
âLook at you,â she said. âYouâre completely wasted. Heâs spent all night following you around while you throw yourself over every man in the room.ââ¨â¨Seungminâs expression hardened.â¨â¨You laughed softly. âIs that what this is about?ââ¨â¨âIâm saying he could do better.â
âWith you?ââ¨â¨âYes.ââ¨â¨The certainty would have been impressive if it were not so pathetic.â¨â¨Your smile disappeared.
Your sister noticed and pushed harder.â¨â¨âIâm prettier. I know how to behave. I donât need eight men constantly touching me and telling me how special I am.ââ¨â¨âNobody is taking care of me.ââ¨â¨âYou can barely stand.â
âIâm drunk at a party.ââ¨â¨âYouâve been climbing into their laps and letting them put their hands all over you. Itâs embarrassing.ââ¨â¨Seungmin stepped away from the wall and moved to your side.â¨â¨His hand settled securely at the back of your waist.
Your sister watched it.â¨â¨âShe hasnât embarrassed me once,â he said.â¨â¨âSheâs been all over Minho. Felix practically had his hands under her clothes earlier.ââ¨â¨âSo?â
Your sister blinked.â¨â¨Seungminâs thumb moved slowly against your side.â¨â¨âShe loves them,â he said. âThey love her. I know exactly where I stand.ââ¨â¨âYou should have more self-respect.â
His eyebrows rose. âYou asked me to cheat on her beside a bathroom.ââ¨â¨âYouâve spent the whole night trying to fuck my boyfriend,â you said, âand somehow Iâm the slut?ââ¨â¨Your sister glared at you.â¨â¨Seungmin continued before she could answer. âDonât talk to either of us about self-respect.â
âYou only say that because sheâs standing here.ââ¨â¨âI rejected you when she wasnât.ââ¨â¨âYou knew sheâd find out.ââ¨â¨âI knew because I was going to tell her.â
âWhy?ââ¨â¨âBecause sheâs my girlfriend.ââ¨â¨Your sister shook her head. âYou donât have to keep settling because she got to you first.ââ¨â¨Seungmin went still.
There it was.â¨â¨The belief beneath every comparison and every attempt.â¨â¨You had simply reached him first.â¨â¨Had she met him earlier, dressed better, tried harder or pushed for long enough, he would eventually recognise that he had chosen the wrong sister.
Seungminâs arm tightened around you.â¨â¨âI noticed her,â he said.â¨â¨Your sister scoffed. âYou hadnât met me.ââ¨â¨âIâve met you now.â
The hallway became very quiet.â¨â¨Music still thudded beyond it. Someone laughed in the living room. Your friend called your sisterâs name once, distant and uncertain.â¨â¨Seungmin looked directly at her.â¨â¨âAnd I still choose her.â
Your sisterâs face changed.â¨â¨For a moment, she appeared almost sober.â¨â¨Then the anger returned.â¨â¨âShe isnât better than me.â
âThis isnât about whoâs better.ââ¨â¨âIt always is.ââ¨â¨âNo,â you said quietly. âItâs always been that way to you.ââ¨â¨She looked at you.
You could feel Seungmin watching your face.â¨â¨At first, it had been funny.â¨â¨Her unnecessary outfits. Her fake excuses. The way she interpreted Seungminâs basic manners as secret attraction.â¨â¨Even now, the idea that he might accept remained ridiculous.
But the joke had always required you to ignore the part where your sister could not want something without explaining why you deserved it less.â¨â¨âYou can want him,â you said. âI donât care. Itâs humiliating for you, but it doesnât threaten me.ââ¨â¨Her mouth twisted.â¨â¨âWhat pisses me off is that you canât admit you want him without telling him Iâm ugly, exhausting, childish or not good enough. You donât flirt with him. You campaign against me.â
âIâve never called you ugly.ââ¨â¨âYou keep telling everyone youâre prettier.ââ¨â¨âI am.ââ¨â¨Seungmin made a disbelieving sound.
You glanced at him.â¨â¨âWhat?ââ¨â¨âNothing. Iâm trying very hard to remain polite.ââ¨â¨Your sister folded her arms. âSee? Youâve turned him against me.â
âI didnât have to. You did that by ignoring him every time he said no.ââ¨â¨The words landed.â¨â¨Your sister looked at Seungmin.â¨â¨His expression did not soften.
âI thought you were being loyal,â she said.â¨â¨âI was being clear.ââ¨â¨âYou were trying not to hurt her.ââ¨â¨âI was trying not to humiliate you.â
Her cheeks flushed.â¨â¨Seungminâs voice lowered. âYouâve made that impossible.ââ¨â¨Your friend appeared at the far end of the hallway.â¨â¨She looked between the three of you, taking in your sisterâs expression and Seungminâs arm around your waist. âWhat happened?â
âNothing,â your sister said immediately.â¨â¨You laughed tiredly. âShe asked Seungmin to have sex with her.ââ¨â¨Your friendâs eyes widened.â¨â¨âYou didnât have to say it like that,â your sister snapped.
âHow should I say it?ââ¨â¨âSheâs drunk,â your friend said carefully.â¨â¨âSo am I.ââ¨â¨âI know.â
Your friend approached and touched your sisterâs arm. âCome and sit down.ââ¨â¨Your sister pulled away. âEveryoneâs acting like Iâve done something terrible.ââ¨â¨âYou propositioned my boyfriend after he repeatedly told you he wasnât interested.ââ¨â¨âYou donât own him.â
âNo,â you said. âI donât.ââ¨â¨That stopped her.â¨â¨You rested more heavily against Seungminâs side but kept your eyes on her.â¨â¨âHeâs a person. He said no. That should have mattered even if I didnât exist.â
Your friend looked at your sister. âSheâs right.ââ¨â¨Betrayal flashed across your sisterâs face. âYouâre supposed to be here with me.ââ¨â¨âIâm here because she invited me.ââ¨â¨The answer was gentle but firm.
Your sister looked between you.â¨â¨Then she laughed bitterly. âFine. Everyone thinks Iâm pathetic.ââ¨â¨Nobody answered.â¨â¨That seemed to hurt more than any denial would have.
Your friend held out her hand. âCome on.ââ¨â¨After a moment, your sister accepted it.â¨â¨She allowed herself to be led back towards the living room without looking at either of you again.â¨â¨You remained in the hallway.
Seungmin rubbed one hand slowly over your back.â¨â¨You watched them disappear.â¨â¨Then you looked at him. âYou really asked why.ââ¨â¨His mouth dropped open.
The laughter returned before you could stop it.â¨â¨Seungmin stared at you. âYouâre impossible.ââ¨â¨âYour face was so confused.ââ¨â¨âShe was vague.â
âShe had you against a wall.ââ¨â¨âShe said upstairs.ââ¨â¨âAt one in the morning.ââ¨â¨âThat could mean anything.â
âName one other thing.ââ¨â¨Seungmin opened his mouth.â¨â¨Nothing came out.â¨â¨You waited.
His expression grew increasingly offended.â¨â¨âExactly.ââ¨â¨He caught your waist in both hands and pulled you closer. âYouâre very annoying.ââ¨â¨âYou love me.â
âIâm reconsidering.ââ¨â¨âNo, you arenât.ââ¨â¨âNo,â he admitted.â¨â¨Your smile softened.
The alcohol made it difficult to hold on to one emotion for long. Amusement blurred into exhaustion, which blurred into the ache your sisterâs words had left behind.â¨â¨Seungmin noticed.â¨â¨He always did.â¨â¨âHey.â
You looked at him.â¨â¨His expression had gentled, eyes warm despite the alcohol. âAre you okay?ââ¨â¨âIâm extremely drunk.ââ¨â¨âI know.â
âSheâs a bitch.ââ¨â¨âShe is.ââ¨â¨âI canât believe she said I throw myself over everyone.ââ¨â¨âYou do,â Seungmin said, completely unbothered. âLuckily, everyone seems very happy to catch you.â
âWith all of you.ââ¨â¨âI know.â His hand settled more firmly at your waist. âIâve never complained.ââ¨â¨âAnd you donât care?ââ¨â¨Seungmin looked genuinely confused. âWhy would I?â
You shrugged. âBecause she saidâââ¨â¨âI donât care what she said.ââ¨â¨The answer came quickly enough to interrupt you.â¨â¨Seungmin lifted your hand and kissed your knuckles.
âI know you,â he said. âI know them. I know what all of this is.ââ¨â¨His free hand gestured towards the living room, where Felix was shouting the chorus to another song while Minho told somebody to turn the music down without making any effort to do it himself.â¨â¨âYouâre my girlfriend,â Seungmin continued. âThat doesnât mean you stop belonging with them too.ââ¨â¨Something warm tightened in your chest.
âThat was disgustingly sweet.ââ¨â¨You kissed him.â¨â¨His hand slid to the back of your neck, keeping you close as the kiss deepened. Nothing frantic. Nothing performed for anybody else.â¨â¨Just familiar affection in a dim hallway while the party continued metres away.
When you pulled back, Seungmin followed for one more kiss.â¨â¨Then another.â¨â¨âYouâre doing too many,â you murmured.â¨â¨âIâve lost count.â
âYou always say that.ââ¨â¨You laughed and rested your forehead against his.â¨â¨âThere she is,â he murmured.â¨â¨Footsteps sounded behind you.
Felix appeared first, followed by Jisung and Minho.â¨â¨Felixâs expression changed when he saw your face. âAre you okay?ââ¨â¨You nodded.â¨â¨Jisung looked unusually serious. âYour friend said something happened.â
âMy sister asked Seungmin to sleep with her.ââ¨â¨Jisung stared at Seungmin.â¨â¨Then at you.â¨â¨Then back at Seungmin.
âWhy?ââ¨â¨You burst out laughing.â¨â¨Seungmin pointed at him. âSee? Reasonable question.ââ¨â¨âThat isnât what I meant,â Jisung said quickly. âWhy would she think youâd say yes?â
âThat sounded better after clarification.ââ¨â¨Minho stepped closer and touched the side of your face. âAre you actually all right?ââ¨â¨You leant into his palm. âMostly.ââ¨â¨âMostly isnât yes.â
âShe was being a bitch.ââ¨â¨âI gathered.ââ¨â¨From the living room, Changbin shouted, âIf you lot are done fondling each other, weâre doing another round.ââ¨â¨Chan shouted back that nobody was doing another fucking shot.
Jeongin appeared in the hallway holding four.â¨â¨The party carried on around you.
