Okay, so we see Railway Management doing all this shit, right, but supposedly it’s so much worse in the Other Railways? I mean, sure, you might get turned into a generator or bricked into a tunnel for not doing as you’re told, but at least you’re not cut up and sold for parts, right? It’s not so bad on the island of Sodor, right?

Or maybe that’s just what Railway Management wants the engines to think.

Maybe the island of Sodor is the real totalitarian regime, and the engine citizens (slaves) are fed propaganda, illustrated in hellish grays and sulfuric yellows, about how bad it is everywhere else, at all the Other Railways.

You are lucky to be an engine of Sodor.

Railway Management cares about you.

Around the end of December, Ogata-san released a slew of insightful tweets regarding life and how we interact with one another. I translated some of them for myself, and when I posted a YYH-related tweet earlier today, I realized I never shared my favorite of her year-end reflections. I hope you will find her words as encouraging as I do: 

“People, given life, live.”

Being alive, every day, there’s a lot to consider. But someday, I want you to feel this in your flesh and bones—

“You are alive for a reason”

For everyone. That’s definite.

In the midst of our inter-tangled lives, it’s definite.

You’ll understand someday. …someday.

That doesn’t mean you’re like an RPG hero you saw someday. It’s unique for each person’s being, for the you that exists now, the real you, “life-sized” in a particular place.

Maybe you think that’s boring.

But the ordinary person’s “major events” are more dramatic than those in a television drama.

They pile up.

But that’s a miracle.

They have an absolutely amazing value.

…me too.

As a person, as an actor (singer), I’m not exceptional. I’m not suited for it. Even as I believed this, I made it through the months and years.

But, now.

Being “given the chance to continue” — by fortune or fate, or any combination of factors, the meaning of it… the years accumulate.

From now, maybe I don’t get to live long.

Maybe by chance, I get to live a super long time? (Laughs) Whichever it is, I wanted to give thanks that I’ve been able to live my life to this point.

Treasure each day.

Go at each day with force.

Think about what you want to do now and go forward thinking of the path that makes it possible.

Let’s do it! Everyone!

Suddenly, “I can’t do it.”

Before that day comes, you must do what you can.

Live to the best of your ability.

You can’t do anything more than that—

Put it into practice yourself first (that’s expected lol)… “three steps forward, two steps back” is expected too. Even so, the people who are doing their best to “take one step forward each day,” I want to support them. Always!

“Let’s do our best!”

That phrase might come off like harassment in the workplace in our society. I’m going to keep saying it though. Because it’s a great phrase.

“Let’s do our best!”

I’m doing my best to live too.

Let’s keep on living together!

“I got interested in building robots, and I wanted to teach myself about hardware.

But building things with hardware, especially if you’re teaching yourself, is something that’s really difficult to do.

It has a high likelihood of failure and moreover, it has a high likelihood of making you feel stupid.

And that was my biggest fear at the time. So I came up with a setup that would guarantee success 100% of the time.

With my setup, it would be nearly impossible to fail. And that was that instead of trying to succeed, I was going to try to build things that would fail.

And even though I didn’t realize it at the time, building stupid things was actually quite smart.

Because as I kept on learning about hardware, for the first time in my life, I did not have to deal with my performance anxiety.
