Can i say something problematique for terminally online millenials and people born after that point: I think the seeming lack of ability or willingness to call one another and chat on the phone with friends unprompted or out of the blue contributes to whatever hellish loneliness everyone is talking about feeling these days. Say what you want about boomers and old people but those guys mostly knew how to keep in touch with each other. Idk man call a bitch today

The Witch Queen - she of the Endless Night Shift, our lady of instant coffee, the keeper of the Book of Hastily Written IOUs - knew the end was nigh.
There were various clues and omens that had led her to this conclusion:
The neon lights of her favourite late-night chicken shop had started blinking at her in morse code.
The advertising screens at bus stops had started showing her an endless parade of life insurance offers.
And she had begun to see the pattern of her own skeleton in the river, drawn out in bones of the long-abandoned shopping trolleys that emerged at low tide.
But out of all of the signs, it was the fact that someone or something had set her squat on fire that really clinched it.
Worse still - none of her wards had been triggered, which meant that whatever had done this was some combination of exceptionally powerful, terrifyingly well prepared, or lucky to the point of being *fated*.
Thus, when the firefighters finally reached her, she knew that it was already too late. She knew, too, that any countercharms, dispellings, or general magical wrigglings that she attempted would only put her would-be rescuers in danger from her killer’s inevitable redundancies.
So she simply smiled weakly as she was carried from the wreck of charred drywall, melted optimism and grubby failed anarchism (it was a squat, after all) and drew wobbly runes of blessing on the firefighters’ uniforms in ash.
And when they placed an oxygen mask over her face, she breathed out instead of in and whispered a spell with the last crisped croak of her voice to trap in place her last breath.
---
When they pulled *me* out of the fire, meanwhile, I lay there flopped like an upended plate of overcooked noodles until the firefighter gently placed the oxygen mask around my mouth and I slowly returned to reality.
I say ‘slowly’ here, not because it was taking me a while to recover from the smoke inhalation (although that was true too). No, I say ‘slowly returned to reality’ because on my first gasp pulled from the tank - the same tank into which the Witch Queen had stitched her last breath - *reality* was for sure not my first destination.
I experienced, at once, the birth and death of the planet. I felt my bones form out of stone and timber as the first cities rose. I was carried to oblivion as I tasted the first mildly toxic mushroom that someone ate *on purpose*. I heard the creak of bones of thousands of years of soul-calcifying labour; unrecognised, unthanked, utterly expected.
And I knew with all certainty that I had just become this city’s new Witch Prince/Princess.
Let me tell you: it was weird as hell, but after the agony of cinders and smoke ripping through my lungs? It was a real breath of fresh heir.
So my sister wants to start sewing more, because
a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.
b. She hates synthetic fibers as much as I do and it’s difficult to find natural fiber clothes that aren’t made of cotton
c. She’s a biologist and would physically fistfight microplastics if given half a chance
So her gift from mom and dad for her birthday was a sewing machine. Not a super expensive one but a good solid serviceable one.
And recently she asked “So where do I GET wool or linen and thread that isn’t polyester” and mom was like ‘go ask your sister’
And I, of course, crashed into the group text like “GET A PEN I HAVE WEBSITES FOR U” and honestly I’m thrilled about this
“Where did u get all this”
“Bets, u know I’m a 15th degree blackbelt of buying shit on the internet”
“oh yeah tru”
Op can may we inquire about the website list
Linen; https://www.graylinelinen.com/
cotton and Silk thread; https://redrockthreads.com/
Linen thread and wool fabric; https://burnleyandtrowbridge.com/ (they’ve got wool stuffs and worsted wool fabric for $15 a yard! I just got three yards of navy worsted wool I’m making a constellation winter skirt from)
More linen thread and wool; https://wmboothdraper.com/ (just ordered wool broadcloth to make a coat)
Silk fabric (THE best place to get silk lining fabrics and raw silk fabric):https://www.dharmatrading.com/
A varying assortment of wool and silk and cotton and even some leather, use coupon code spring2020 for 50% off your full order, worked yesterday when I bought some stuff there; https://metrotextilesnyc.com/
Wool. You want wool coating for under $20 a yard? Sure you do. It’s here. Not a huge variety of colors, most are black or brown, but hey https://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/Catalog?refinementIds=4096748&Keyword=wool&pageSize=16
I don’t know a lot about sewing, but I want to make or have my mom make some linen pants & shirts for when I’m watering, because it gets to 105 here and we have mosquitos so I need to be covered. What type of linen do I buy? Also, linen pajama shorts, yes/no?
(I’ve been wearing my renfaire pants which are a linen mix, I think. But the frikking mosquitos that hide in the tomatoes get my arms)
Medium weight is what I’d go with.
And linen pajama shorts is a HARD yes.
Renaissance Fabrics is good for all sorts of things
Mood doesn’t specialize in natural fabrics but they do have basically every fabric ever made so
Dorr Mill Store has a great selection of wool fabric in all sorts of colors and patterns.

Spent this week on making a bunch of faux oldschool anime screencaps. Had a blast making these, I’m especially happy with the background in the third one. I’ll probably keep making these, so look forward to more of these in the future!

a couple of the many beautiful Kikihia scutellaris cicadas molting last night :-)
tbh i don't really get why we divide the oceans into different oceans because they're all connected it's the same ocean
no metaphor here just pure confusion...is there a line where one ocean stops and another begins? or is it like a smooth gradient of percentages of one ocean shading into another ocean?
Yes, there is a line. There are confluences you can see and touch and they are NOT subtle in the slightest.
That's the Atlantic and the Caribbean on a particularly pronounced day.
This is the Indian and the Pacific. It's not always this obvious everywhere but the dividing lines are very much there.
Oceans have their own properties as far as temperature and salinity and unless something like a storm or a current forces them to mix they won't. Mostly this applies to vertical mixing and it gives you things like thermoclines and haloclines but water is wierd and won't mix horizontally either.
The ocean basins tend to have their own currents that go in a circle and define that ocean, and those patterns mix the water within that ocean. Like a washing machine.
The Caribbean has a little loop of its own that not on this map, but that current keeps that ocean pretty internally consistent. It's got clear warm water because of the shallow bowl of limestone sand it sits in. Where it meets the Atlantic with wildly different conditions the water is traveling in opposite directions, and it acts kind of like an oncoming lane of highway traffic. Species that have adapted to a narrow band of temperatures and salinities (most fish) can't cross, while species with a stronger homeostasis hang out there on purpose, (marine mammals, turtles, sharks). Plankton, that cannot control their horizontal movement in the water column, are held in their home territories by these barriers.
This is cool as fuck
